They lined the side of the backyard, the left side as you exited the house. Stretched from the bleeding-heart bush at the gate to the mulberry tree at the far end, the tree guarding the spot where you could hop the fence and get into the elementary school’s playground. The arcs of their branches left hollows beneath, big enough to crawl inside and sit in. Bury hidden treasure in the fallen leaves of the previous year.
