Apparently most people don’t have the thing I have where my non-dominant hand is stronger than my dominant hand. Throughout my life, I’ve always found the intuitive distribution of labor, hand-use-wise, to involve using my right hand for any task which involves precise movements or quick reaction times (writing, mouse-movement, fencing, et cetera), and my left for any task which involves brute force and can afford to sacrifice precision (opening tightly-closed bottles and jars and heavy doors and so forth, probably some other categories of tasks I’m forgetting right now).

I wonder if this is related to the thing where, despite doing most two-handed activities in the prototypically right-handed fashion, I’ve always done minigolf and baseball batting in the prototypically left-handed fashion.

I wonder how common this is. All I really know about it is that I have the thing and my mom does not. (I found out when she expressed surprise at me opening jars with my left hand.)

I’ve never played baseball; I am not sure how I hold a mini-golf club, or for that matter what the prototypically right/left-handed fashions of mini-golfing would be.

Are you implying you’re on a no name newsletter

I am on the No Frills newsletter! I don’t remember whether I *deliberately* signed up as part of getting a loyalty account, or if it was an accident that I then decided to keep. I figured it might have some handy coupons or some such.

Mostly it’s just flyer notifications, and since I already get (and use) paper flyers from them that’s not really useful for me. I’m currently still skimming each one to see if there’s anything useful or interesting, but I might unsubscribe.

I’m grateful that the ability to call people bitches has survived wokeness more or less unscathed. I figured it would, but you can never be 100% sure about these things

…it has?

I mean I guess under a model where it’s important that swearwords be *transgressive*–and where (somewhat) greater acceptance of swearing has thus made them less potent–one could argue that wokeness has *encouraged* “bitch” by shoring up its transgressiveness. But to me it definitely feels like it’s in that transgressive-but-not-totally-beyond-the-pale zone, and for primarily SJ reasons.

(Noticeably further into the zone than calling something “insane”, likely because of the remaining force of the obscenity. I might use “insane” colloquially after some hesitation or if my emotions were running high, but would probably not use “bitch”.)

I had the weirdest dream last night where it was about a next big meme trend, and it was basically another this vs that meme but it was “Lock screen vs Home screen” whereas the lock screen was depicted as something formal and relatively uninteresting like a businessman sitting at a desk while the home screen was always something chaotic and insane like gorillas fighting alligators and it. People would take sides online on which person they were more like, home screen or lock screen and it made absolutely no sense and I

Reality: The lock screen is full of high-contrast detail (currently a picture of me and the gf), the home screen is the lowest-contrast default background (currently a space pic) I can find so I can read app names.

I did not know until just now that it was possible to have the lock screen and home screen be different images, and I intend to change nothing about my phone now that I know.

etirabys:

Recently, I’ve been fascinated the payoff matrix for two people who are breathing with their mouths very close to each other.

If they’re breathing out of sync – one person inhaling for the exact duration the other person exhales – then this is the worst case for both of them, because they both get stale air.

It’s maximally cooperative of them, and raises quality of total air intake, if they’re completely in sync. When they both exhale, they push a lot of stale air out, and when they inhale, combine their forces to bring new air into the area around their mouths.

The part I’m interested in is defection. The way you maximize your air quality is by setting your cycle slightly after theirs. They start clearing the air when they breathe in, so you get cleaner air if you wait until they’ve done a bit of it to start yourself. The air is best when they’ve just stopped but you’re still inhaling for a second.

The other part I’m interested in is: few people think about this, so if I defect on someone I’m making out with, they’re probably not going to know. It’s like the perfect crime.

After days of mulling over this, I told all this to the new person I’m seeing, and added, “I have defected on you several times, just to have the experience.” They found this amusing, and did not dislike me upon knowing how they’d been cheated. Again, this makes this the perfect defection. I recommend it to anyone else who craves the cheap thrill of ripping someone off.

I also think about this, but in the context of cuddling, so instead the conclusion I came to was that the optimal move is to simply never be face-to-face with the other person. I’ve never made out with anyone and have no plans to, so I hadn’t thought about how it would also be an issue (and one not as easily solved) in that context.

I just got my Alcor membership finalized! I have the amulet and everything!

\o/

Oddly enough, I was just researching cryonics myself these past two days.

My conclusion was “given my current financial situation, increasing my expenses by ~USD$1k/year is probably more likely to get me killed than not immediately signing up for vitrification is”. (yes I saw the Cryonics Institute, but frankly I would not trust any sort of long-term facility in *Detroit* further than I could throw it) Alcor membership is now #6 on my list of Things to Save Up For Once My Finances Permit Saving Up That Much, below the non-shitty car but above the fire-escape ladder.

(I get the impression that the demographics are pretty different, but cryonics nevertheless parses to me as a Neat Prepper Thing. I have a soft spot for things that one will likely never find useful but will be *extremely glad for* if one does.)

If you’re an ace who masturbates regularly, what happens if you don’t?

In the short term, I’ll be very tired all the time [link]. I’ll sleep an extra hour a day and still be exhausted. (Since masturbating takes me *less* than an hour a day†, this makes it strictly superior in terms of time, in *addition* to being more effective and more pleasant.)

In the medium term, nothing. I have a menstrual-phase-linked libido, so in general any given level of sex drive will go away if I wait a few days.

In the long term, it’s hard to distinguish the effect of not masturbating *per se* from the effect of whatever’s preventing me from masturbating. Being overwhelmingly busy is unpleasant, of course. So is ignorance of the outlets available to you: *believing* that there’s nothing you can do about sexual frustration, or that what you can do isn’t much [link].

†It’s important that I not feel rushed, so I give myself as long as I want and don’t check the time until afterward. However, “as long as I want” invariably turns out to be between 25 and 40 minutes.

Anonymous asked; I’m ace (and libido-less) but the whole aces with kinks/fetishes thing has always been hard for me to wrap my brain around. Is it just a sex drive/libido thing? Is it more of a fascination/appreciation? I’d enjoy a topic on that so I could learn and better support my fellow aces!

asexualactivities:

One way I’ve heard it explained is that it’s not necessarily about sex at all. It’s often more about the power dynamics, the role play, things like that.

However, I personally have no experience with any of that, so would anyone who is more involved care to field this one?

I had an anon ask me a very similar question a few years back. Here’s what I told them.
