Jack Harkness is probably the reason why bilateral symmetry is the template for all intelligent lifeforms in this series’ universe.

Please tell me I wasn’t the only one making this theory while watching Utopia in Season 3.

BEAUTIFUL

ROFLMAO

Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

First, I couldn’t stop laughing. Then I spent an hour trying to figure out how a normal human manages to have kids with a cloud or a download.

Zoe and Wash, while deeply forever ridiculously in love, are not drift compatible.

Zoe and Mal are drift compatible.

Kaylee and Wash are drift compatible, and they have the best piloted, sweetest running jaeger ever been seen in the ‘verse – the best piloted, sweetest running jaeger ever to run away from a kaiju.

SECONDED

(also, the sudden thought of River Tam in a jaeger is rutting terrifying)

She hung from the ceiling, a perfect, motionless sculpture of a girl in the process of becoming a fruitbat.  Simon glanced up at her periodically, both checking that she was still present, and reassuring himself that the grind of the machines overhead would keep her from hearing what he had to say.  It wasn’t that he was keeping secrets from her; River knew everything about her condition, sometimes more than he did.  It was that she didn’t like being talked about, and he respected that.

“They weren’t trying to unlock psychic powers or anything like that, no matter what the rumors say,” he said, his voice shaking slightly.  Kaylee shifted her weight from foot to foot, disturbed by that tremor in his words.  Simon Tam was the best K-scientist she’d ever worked with.  For him to sound scared…

“Those people, those monsters…” Simon paused to take a deep breath, relaxing a little at the taste of oil on his tongue.  Enough time spent with Kaylee had turned grime into perfume.  “They were trying to set up a neural bridge inside a single mind.  They wanted to do away with the need for drift compatibility, and privatize the Pilots.  Imagine being able to market Jaegers for domestic and commercial use, because you only needed one Pilot, and that Pilot was so doped and dependent that they could never leave you.”

“That’s horrific,” whispered Kaylee.  “They…they messed up her brain tryin’ to do something as can’t be done?”

“Oh, it can be done,” said Simon grimly.  “They succeeded.

“My sister is in constant Drift with herself.”

I have this Really Important headcanon that after the war, Harry takes Grimmauld Place and converts it into a children’s home for Hogwarts students who can’t or shouldn’t or don’t want to go back home for the summer holidays because of Serious Reasons because like. if he hadn’t had to go back to the dursleys every summer. if tom riddle had been able to stay at hogwarts all year instead of returning to his horrible life. if beaten down, neglected, destitute, depressed, miserable kids who see hogwarts as A Way Out could just be removed from those toxic melancholy destructive environments even more permanently

He calls it the R.J. Lupin House and takes volunteers from both the existing Hogwarts staff and the general Hogwarts-oriented wizarding community for caregivers etc. during the summer months. sometimes there’s summer programming for education or just for funsies and sometimes there isn’t and it’s just a place for kids to live and be themselves as they deserve to be. and Harry holds lil Quidditch matches for the athletic kids and Neville is among the first to volunteer and that’s how he gets his start on the track to becoming a full-blown professor

do you ever cry

what if the reason nobody can tell fred and george apart is because they really are interchangeable

not in a ~it doesn’t matter~ way but like. molly and arthur used to worry that fred and george might turn out to be squibs because they weren’t doing any accidental magic as children, but they were, THEY TOTALLY WERE, it just wasn’t anything flashy, instead they were just like idly switching bodies all the time

and like sometimes it doesn’t make much of a difference, whatever, wake up in the opposite bed you went to sleep in, but it gets like dangerous and weird if you’re on a broom or in the pond or letting your mum teach you to cook or trying to be mad stealth, so for a long long time everybody presumes they’re clumsy maybe-squibs and that they’re doing their twin lying thing when they try to explain what’s going on, so they learn to handle the issue their ownselves

they just. don’t go anywhere without the other. they start each day deciding which body is going to be which (because at this point they really don’t know which body is technically fred and which is technically george), and they learn to reorient FAST when they switch, and what things set them off, and eventually they learn how to act like nothing’s up even when one of them’s in the air and one’s on the ground or whatever, and then they burn past that til they can finish each other’s sentences — til they can switch midsentence — til they can play beater together — til they can switch in a split second in the middle of a game — til there’s room for other kinds of accidental magic to start showing up

at hogwarts they keep each other awake in history of magic by switching back and forth. in potions they take turns brewing and keeping lookout for the slytherins. in transfiguration and charms they keep their grades up because one of them will always get a spell right on the first try so they switch and make it look like both of them do and then they practice on their own later in private. it keeps the mystery alive.

at first they thought lee was just a lucky guesser but no, lee can always tell one twin from another twin — it’s not exactly telling fred from george, because while they are definitely two distinct personalities neither one of them feels like fred all the time or george all the time — but lee knows who he argued with yesterday or who he lent his notes to or who’s best to ask for help in astronomy and who’s best at runes.

the weasleys are pretty bad at it for the longest time, but then bill comes home from his first year cursebreaking and he can tell, and over a holiday he teaches his trick to charlie so charlie can tell. alicia and katie and angelina can tell. the twins honestly don’t know if oliver can tell or not; so long as they’re doing what they’re supposed to on the quidditch pitch he doesn’t really care about much else. harry can tell. luna can tell. tonks can tell.

the problem is there’s no way for this to end happily

There totally is a way for this to end happily.

After all, they’re switching bodies. That doesn’t mean they can’t share one. One of the bodies might be lost, but Fred & George live on.

allamaraine asked: Kira + art

sophiagratia:

The first two things that come to mind:

  • a flock of flightless birds
  • once i wrote a story in which kira shoots a fresco

So we are more or less doomed, here. I haven’t thought about this much before, but here are my impressions at a first attempt.

Art for Kira is, first, about ruin. About damage, and loss. That is what violent occupations do to art. This is her first concept of art: stolen paintings and sculptures, damaged buildings, a campaign of disinformation about Bajoran achievements in the arts.

Then art must be, later, about recovery, about salvage. What can be restored, recovered, unburied.

Kira doesn’t have much in the way of an aesthetic sensibility, or at least that’s what she would claim. She forms strong attachments to art objects, and articulating why, or what it is about the object’s aesthetic features that draws her to it, is less interesting to her than the fact of the object and the fact of her attachment.

Perhaps she begins with a disdain for ‘pure decoration,’ prizing only art that has a use: prayer mandalas, for example. But perhaps with time she starts to see that the useful/decorative binary doesn’t hold up. What if something is useful because of the feeling it provokes? What if, like her prayer mandala, a useful object is also decorative? These simple questions occur to her relatively late in life, and the result is that she develops a reverence for the very fact of objects that provoke them.

She will never be a collector, but she will learn that to stand before a beautiful thing in contemplation of it is a worthwhile act – and it is an act that demands that the work of art be referred to itself, and not to any gesture of possession or mastery. She will for this reason prefer museums to private possessions, and temples to museums.

That act of contemplation is itself an act of recovery, of restoration and unburial. And for this reason, she will work hard to see that Bajor’s art finds public homes, that art objects are returned to the places that first housed them, and that any space – a temple, a museum, a library archive – devoted to art objects will be freely accessible to anyone, so that those recuperative acts of contemplation belong to anyone, to everyone.

This is a good post, I like this post, the fic you actually linked is new to me and looks interesting, but I would also like to know what fic you intended to link. It doesn’t look to be this one, what with the “Oparu” in the author’s-name section.

sophiagratia:

I started thinking about the outsides of starships and how seldom humans touch them.

Which has led inevitably to thinking about how when she gets home and her ship is in drydock, Kathryn Janeway spends a lot of time very late at night lying on Voyager’s hull, in the hollow where the silly headlight beam lies, understanding in a completely new way the scale of her ship, feeling the outside of it.

rememberwhenyoutried:

Oh my god I have instantly accepted Rowan’s explanation for the New Trek films: they exist in the original Trek universe as TV movies! They take huge liberties with the science, characterisation and basic facts (look out the window: is Vulcan still there? Yes!) but sadly for Kirk this shitty Lifetime cable channel is obsessed with him and won’t stop churning them out.

At the end of the third movie, the perspective will change to Will and Deanna watching it on a padd. Troi will be online, giving it a terrible review.

carlos being on T

carlos being on T and Night Vale General not having a very large stock of it and so he gets worried until Cecil makes a Completely Not Menacing Editorial Call For Action and they get more donated from three different anonymous sources

carlos being on T and Cecil going with him while he gets an injection and holding his hand and being Incredibly Worried even though carlos says it’s fine, really, he’s been doing this for years, Cecil

carlos running into old woman josie who squints at him and frowns and says it wasn’t like this back in her day, nope, what a disappointment, kids used to have to use good old fashioned black magic to transition in her day and he doesn’t know how good he has it

carlos being incredibly glad he’s on T and not on black magic

One of the trans!Carlos ideas I’ve been playing around with (but haven’t decided on yet) is that because the Night Vale Post Office is shut down, he has no way to get T from that place in Oregon everyone gets it from—

—but somehow his voice keeps getting gradually deeper and his beard a little thicker and his muscles build easily and he is really

not

sure

how

But Night Vale takes care of its own.
