fox-bright:

My covid post from last year is going around again, as I sit here debating how and what to write about HPAI H5N1.

I’m tired.

Things to know:

  • HPAI H5N1, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1, is so far wildly lethal when humans get it. Somewhere between 53% and 56% of the humans who have been found to have it have died.
  • Those people mainly got it from interacting with sick birds. A couple have gotten it from interacting with sick mammals. The one of those that’s most important to US news right now is a worker at a milk cow farm who got sick very recently. That worker’s only symptom before getting on antiviral medication was pinkeye.
  • (Keep your cats indoors; cats are getting it from sick birds. Don’t have bird feeders this year. Do NOT interact with wild birds that are acting strangely; do not poke at dead wild birds.)
  • Humans are not yet giving it to humans. There are one or two cases where they might have done, in the last few years; those cases guttered out quickly, to the great good luck of our species, and did not spread.
  • Human-to-human transmission is the big concern.
  • We are not in any immediate danger of H2H transmission. When we’re in immediate danger, you’ll know.
  • When the flip happens, we will go from not being in immediate danger to being in immediate danger, very rapidly. This could happen this month, or in five months, or in five years, and we don’t know when.
  • By the time we are in immediate danger, it is too late to do the greater bulk of your preparation.
  • So it’s time to prepare now. This time we have is a blessing. We should not squander it. What would you have done differently in September, 2019, if you knew what was coming? Do that.
  • With some differences; a) flu can pass by fomite–that is, a sick person touches a doorknob, you touch a doorknob, you rub your face, you get sick–so you actually do need cleaning chemicals for this one. b) This one gets in through the eyeballs pretty easily in its current shape, so eye protection should be prepped for adding to masking in public spaces. c) this one is gonna call for fever reducers and we know how hard they were to get when covid hit; stock up. And stock up on pet food if you can keep it from going bad, because pet food gets its protein from cow and bird meat; there will be shortages.
  • With a lot of similarities; the flu is airborne so don’t stop masking, if we have a proper lockdown this time you’re going to wish you had flour and rice and canned fruit so keep stock of all your staples. If you have a nice big freezer, now is the time to get beef and chicken before the prices shoot to the ceiling. I’m also stocking up on powdered milk and powdered eggs for baking with.

We have made a lot, a LOT of mistakes with how we’ve handled covid. But one thing we didn’t do wrong was all of the community-building in the early days. Think about what worked then, and what didn’t really work. Now is the time to make sure community bonds are strong. As always, as in ANY potential disaster, there are two most-important questions?

Who can protect and support you?

Who can you support and protect?

Plan accordingly.

I had a lot of fun with my Boston poll so I’m making a new random poll.

You must live in one of these US cities. You make $65k a year. Where are you living?

us-city-choice-game-poll

Please put your justifications in the tags. Yes you have to live in the US in this hypothetical I’m sorry. Maybe if there is a demand I will run another poll with world cities.

Results so far are interesting. Based on the notes, it seems that there is a large faction who is overly concerned with how far $65k would go (the Sioux Falls camp) and a large faction who has given absolutely no thought to the cost of living (the Santa Barbara camp)

Asheville is great but I hear it’s gotten really expensive, not sure 65k would be enough

worry for naught 2 (demo)

one time i thought “what if i wrote worry for naught in 2023” so i did

lyrics below (kinda, the written version is more recent than the recorded version)

{{below the cut:}}

I’ve seen my share of illusions getting brighter
I’ve seen how even the fighters turn to fliers
And I had been so certain I was safe
Assuming my DNA wouldn’t dare relate

But there’s some ways that a life wears down the stoic
Delights to ask what you know before you know it
One day I dared to inquire what happens next
And found the answer was bubbling in my chest

Oh oh no
Please let me
Please let me go
Oh oh
I need to
I need to know
Oh oh
There’s nothing waiting down the road
To send me tumbling alone
In the undertow

How can I say I’m afraid of the fall
When there’s nothing falling
Dead silence screaming at me from these walls
And it leaves me stalling
The cold light of the moon
Inviting me to assume
There’s a lot I simply can’t do
How can I say I’m afraid of the call
When there’s no one calling

Churning, vortexing the sense of any future
My ship is sinking as I try not to lose her
I hope that I get to feel awake again
It would be dreamlike

Oh oh no
Please let me
Please let me go
Oh oh
I need to
I need to know
Oh oh
There’s nothing I need take alone
There’s nothing to what I’ve been shown
Through the dark window

How can I say I’m afraid of the fall
When there’s nothing falling
Dead silence screaming at me from these walls
And it leaves me stalling
The cold light of the moon
Inviting me to assume
There’s a lot I simply can’t do
How can I say I’m afraid of the call
When there’s no one calling

I hope that I get to feel awake again
It would be dreamlike
If nothing’s calling

Okay so in LA they’ve had the reusable bag and thick plastic bag for ten cents going on for years but in Vegas they still give you thin plastic bags at every store but they’re these really thin shitty bags that you pretty much can’t reuse because they barely survive the trip from the car to the house.

So basically this is how I tell you that I’ve started making plarn that I’m crocheting into a plarn basket that I will use to hold the plarn balls I make in the future in order to control how many plastic bags are pouring out of our cabinets.

f256cae477b8ed28816e6051592510684bef61c7

ms-demeanor:

How to make plarn:

1. Flatten out a clean plastic bag

2. Cut off the handles and the bottom

3. Cut diagonally into the plastic until the strand is about as thick as you want it to be. (Probably aim for at least an inch thick, it doesn’t have to be super even all the way around but you don’t want it to get so thin that the strand will break)

4. Cut in a spiral until you run out of bag and then diagonally cut your way out of the final loop.

5. Tie the end of the strand to the end of whatever you were working on or to the last stand you cut.

6. Wind or crochet like any other bulky yarn.

The gray disk at the bottom of this post is the bottom of my basket, I’m using an N/10mm hook in a double-crocheted spiral. (I’ve just started the first layer of elevation)

So far I’m about 10-12 bags in and I’ve been trimming the tails of the joined bags as I go.

(One bag’s worth of plarn goes about halfway around the disk at this point, I think I’m going to do 3-4 more gray bags before I change colors; bags come in 3 general colors around here so this basket is going to be mostly white with gray and brown accents.)

ms-demeanor:

Also save the bag scraps, you can use them as stuffing. I’m gonna make a big fucking pincushion with mine. It’s gonna be a cube made out of the leftover cat fabric that I don’t want to use for masks.

Worked my way through the ball in the first photoset, made some more balls. I’m intrigued by the way the patterns on the white bags show up. I’ve got some Ross and 99 cent store bags in the next white ball to add some purple and blue-green to the mix.

Making this basket might actually exhaust my current supply of plastic bags, so I’ve asked my dad to set aside his thicker bags for me in LA so I can compare working both materials.

Kind of get the feeling that I’m going to be a complete gremlin and make a laundry hamper out of the thicker plastic.

It’s a little ugly, but it’s going to do a great job of holding my plarn and associated projects.

pirenja:

Oh this is totally apocalypse punk! Makes me want to make my own for use in small grocery runs. Or just to write a scrappy band of fictional survivors using them, haha.

ms-demeanor:

NGL, cutting apart a pile of plastic trash and turning it into thread and rolling it into balls and crocheting it into fabric does feel like some variety of cyberpunk Rumplestiltskin shit.

kipplekipple:

Idk that I’d call it ugly because the white part with the little flecks is so cute.

After all these years, the app I really really want to exist is still Pokémon for Naturalists.

Seek from iNaturalist is good, if limited, but dammit, I want REAL gamification. I want people to get a serious hit of dopamine from their citizen science. Especially plants.

I want to record sightings of ten different shrubs and BAM you get a Shrubasaur, but he’s not gonna evolve into Oakdaimon until you log fifty species of tree. I want obscure-ass Naturemon that only show up if you’ve successfully logged thirty species of nearly identical lichens. I want to walk into a swamp and find a gamer in hip waders grinding water bug IDs so that he can finally get Belastoman, the Toe-Cutter.

Then ideally I want to be able to battle other naturalists. I want to yell “Sedgizard, I choose you!” and have my opponent stare in mingled awe and horror, because bitch, it took me years to document three hundred native sedges, and NOW IT WILL EAT YOUR FACE.

…I am pretty sure I am not the only person who would be down for this.

There’s a fancy word for this phenomenon, used by scientists who study infectious diseases from an ecological perspective: zoonosis. […] It’s a word of the future, destined for heavy use in the twenty-first century.

2014 Oct: Ebola: The Natural and Human History of a Deadly Virus, by David Quammen

I got that off Siderea’s Great Age of Plagues series, though perhaps you got it from elsewhere.

That’s getting at the same idea, yeah, but I don’t think it’s the exact line I was thinking of. (I wouldn’t be surprised if the thing I saw was a David Quammen author interview, though.)
