nextstepcake:

The ace community census is an annual survey by the Asexual Visibility and Education Network which collects valuable information on the demographics and experiences of members of the ace community. It is the largest survey of ace communities and creates a valuable pool of data for future ace community activists and researchers.

The survey is open to anyone: ace, non-ace, or still questioning, as long as you are over the age of 13 we want to hear from you! We want to get a wide variety of responses from as many parts of the community as possible, so we encourage you to share this link with any other ace individuals you know or any ace communities you participate in.

Click here to take the 2016 Ace Community Census!

For answers to common questions about the survey, please see the FAQ here.

You will be able to view any published results from the survey at asexualcensus.wordpress.com.

quick, random poll: can you imagine smells? (I cannot, or at least my attempts to right now are failing, and I also can’t recall ever specifically doing so)

No! This is disturbing why didn’t I know this?

i can!

(i have no memory/record regarding whether i could do that before i worked at Bath & Body Works)

I can, but not very well. Taste is much easier.

I guess? I don’t know how I’d go about creating new imaginary scents, but I can copy scents I remember. Not all that well, but my visual imagination is also towards the low-detail end.

Scottish Grindr users on the EU referendum

machotrouts:

I’ve previously taken to Grindr to ask users their opinions on the Scottish independence referendum and the 2015 general election.

More recently, I’ve been asking Grindr users in and around Edinburgh whether they believe the United Kingdom should withdraw from the European Union. Here is a representative sample of the replies:

Grindr Brexit 1
Grindr Brexit 2
Grindr Brexit 3
Grindr Brexit 4
Grindr Brexit 5
Grindr Brexit 6
Grindr Brexit 7
Grindr Brexit 8
Grindr Brexit 9
Grindr Brexit 10
Grindr Brexit 11
Grindr Brexit 12
Grindr Brexit 13
Grindr Brexit 14
Grindr Brexit 15
Grindr Brexit 16
Grindr Brexit 17
Grindr Brexit 18
Grindr Brexit 19
Grindr Brexit 20
Grindr Brexit 21
Grindr Brexit 22
Grindr Brexit 23
Grindr Brexit 24
Grindr Brexit 25
Grindr Brexit 26
Grindr Brexit 27
Grindr Brexit 28
Grindr Brexit 29
Grindr Brexit 30
Grindr Brexit 31
Grindr Brexit 32

STATISTICS:

I was only able to question 327 users before Grindr moderators intervened. 151 users left some kind of response. Of these, 108 settled on a yes or no answer.

81.48% (88) would like to REMAIN in the European Union.

18.52% (20) would like to EXIT the European Union.

Other responses can be divided as follows:

10   Undecided
8     Don’t care
8     Miscellaneous evasion

6     None of my business
3     Too bewildered to answer
3     Too horny to engage politically
3     Turned out to be a spambot
2     Incomprehensible

(This leaves 38 users who presumably blocked me by the time the results were counted. Any responses they may have given are not counted here.)

In conclusion, Scottish Grindr users are overwhelmingly against leaving the European Union. With it looking increasingly doubtful that such a comfortable victory for remainers will be reflected in the broader United Kingdom’s vote in the upcoming referendum, Grindr may have to consider declaring itself an independent nation to remain in the EU.

something i’m curious about: where are you from, and is it normal to see fireflies in the summer?

choppye:

Auckland New Zealand and HELL NO

macateallthespookings:

my mom lives in NC and during the summer the treeline behind her house lights up with so many fireflies that it looks like flickering stars in a darker part of the night sky

iwillbeyourhands:

yeah this is my experience, basically a constant lights show in the summer

timefortigers:

ive never seen a firefly in my life

wufflesvetinari:

in suburban michigan you may see a single firefly at night and it will be a Big Deal. if you go to the more wooded areas, you’ll see them flashing on and off regularly (still not that intense though)

ladyyatexel:

Everywhere in Pennsylvania. They’re actually our state insect.

jewishdragon:

California

No

thetransintransgenic:

Some places have fireflies and some places do not and the places that do not are WRONG AND BAD BECAUSE FIREFLIES ARE WONDERFUL AND AMAZING.

Raising a child in a place that does not have Sufficient Fireflies is basically ALMOST AS TERRIBLE as gendering your child, which is very terrible indeed.

(</sarcasm>. Except about the “gendering children is terrible”. And the “fireflies are awesome”. But it’s okay and not abuse if there are no fireflies, I guess. Even though fireflies are awesome.)

sinesalvatorem:

I have seen, like, one firefly (or maybe another luminous flying bug?) every few months in the couple Caribbean countries I’ve lived in. It seems to be completely unrelated to seasons there.

I miss New Jersey’s fireflies. I haven’t seen a firefly since I moved to southern Ontario.

(To be fair, I don’t go out at dusk very often here, so it’s possible there’s some around and they’re just less blatant.)

Hey there fellow person!

You like science? Pseudoscience? Statistics? Being part of weird projects? Just really passionate about surveys maybe?

Well aren’t you in luck! As you may or may not know (probably may not), the website xkcd, home of the webcomic of the same name and of the incredible What if? articles, has launched a survey full of kinda-weird questions in hopes of getting enough data to analyze it.

What even is the point?

If enough people answer, we have a good chance of finding ‘meaningful’ correlations (yes, just like in science!). The fun fact though is that given the content of the questions, these will be pretty interesting correlations. (Like.. “People who have already flown in an airplane are way more prone not to like cilantro” or stuff like that.)

Sure but why are you talking about it?
Well. Because the more people there is, the more ‘accurate’ those correlations will be because we’ll have more data to analyze.
Also, some of you might like to analyze data, and can be interested in having a bunch of it to have fun with.
.. And maybe some of you peeps just like to take surveys, who even knows?

So I’ll just be giving personal (even if weird) data to who-knows-who ?
Data will be anonymous. People will just have access to your answers. If that still bothers you though, I would definitely recommend you to avoid this survey.

I’m sold! Where do I sign up?
That’s the kind of energy I like to see! Well once again, the survey is here. Have fun and feel free to share it to everybody you know! The more random the ‘sample group’, the more accurate the correlations!

this survey is a gift to the world

It’s not every day you have a completely valid and scientific excuse to mash the keyboard for a good thirty seconds straight

I predict that my answer to the keyboard-mashing one will be the most common answer, and am curious about what it’ll correlate with.

I probably should have checked off “beer” on the list of foods I dislike, but oh well. (I’ve never had beer, but I dislike wine, hard cider, and creme de menthe/cacao all for the same reason (they taste like being stabbed with countless little needles), which suggests the reason generalises to all alcohol.)

ozymandias271:

the US trans survey is now available! It is the followup to the single most-cited survey about trans people, and it looks like it’s going to present even better data about trans people and transphobia.

If you are transgender, a crossdresser, nonbinary, or a person who has detransitioned, please take the survey.
