The seventh annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 12th March 2020.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a blog post summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, retweet this tweet, boost this Mastodon post, check out this post on Reddit, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks like Facebook. Every share is extremely helpful – it’s what helped us get 11,000 responses last year.
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.

In my old house it was bottom right… but my apartment now it’s bottom left because of the layout of my kitchen for some reason. Idk why it changed for me, but the bottom right just doesn’t feel right now.

Bottom-right is clearly the best burner, because you don’t have to reach as far and the larger burner size heats the pot more evenly. Bottom-left is okay for boiling pasta and stuff like that, but I’ve *tried* making popcorn on the bottom-left burner and it *doesn’t cook right* because that burner is too small.
(results not applicable to stove designs in which the burners are not of different sizes, or designs where the sizes have a different pattern; possibly also not applicable to people significantly taller than 5′3″ or equivalently shorter stoves)

No, except maybe for very broad definitions.
I did accidentally drip hot wax on myself (ow) while using a candle to light another candle as a pre-teen, and I did semi-accidentally burn my thumb on a cigarette lighter while trying to use it to light a campfire at age 13 (I didn’t *intend* the burn, but when I saw it was happening I didn’t try to stop it, because I was on my zillionth attempt to light this campfire and I decided that at this point not getting burned wasn’t worth having to start over again). However, I don’t think my body was ever itself actually on fire, and the burns were definitely not for purposes of avoiding boredom.

i need to clean the dataset in a more systematic way – someone has no doubt already done this, but it’s good practice – but here’s a few things that struck me as interesting. note that i looked at a bunch of things and didn’t correct for that, that i looked at them in a sloppy way, and that of course i went right for mindkilling stuff.

Both, but I think I’m fighting a losing battle: I fairly often encounter statements that are completely nonsensical *unless* you interpret “porn” as necessarily being video (and in many cases, as being necessarily mass-produced and for-profit).

Supposedly I had a great-grandfather who ate one entirely black banana every day, and who lived into his nineties, so I don’t think the overripe ones will hurt me, but after a certain point they taste weird. So once you get to 12, you have to make banana bread.
6 is the perfect sweet spot where it’s a nice vibrant yellow and perfectly ripe and doesn’t have any brown yet. So, that if I can, otherwise as close to it as possible.

Oh, actually, this is a good place to get survey data on an interesting question of linguistics. Could as many people as possible please take this survey on whether certain constructions seem grammatical to you so I can answer a problem that’s been bugging my household.
I’m not sure whether “homeschooled with English-language schoolbooks by a native-English-speaking mother” qualifies as “>10 years in an English-language school system” for your purposes. I clicked “no”, because normally when people ask me if I’ve spent >10 years in a school system the correct answer is “no”, but now I’m having second thoughts.

It’s time for the fourth annual nonbinary/genderqueer survey!
Last year there were over 3,000 participants, and I’d love it if we could beat that this year. If your gender isn’t fully expressed or described by the gender binary, you are enthusiastically invited to take part – regardless of the words (if any) that you use to describe your gender.
There are just 8 questions, and it doesn’t ask for your birth assignment or any identifying information.

The United States is about to elect a new president. I’ve previously polled UK Grindr users on Scottish independence, the 2015 generalelection, and Brexit. This time, I decided to poll US Grindr users on who they think should be leading their country.

For every state, I aimed for a number of responses equivalent to each state’s number of presidential electors – from 55 for California to 3 for Delaware, Vermont, Alaska etc. A few fell a little short as I was banned (my 10th Grindr ban to date) just before I could finish, though most matched or exceeded the target.
