The Gender Census 2020 is now open!

gendercensus:

[ Link ]

The seventh annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 12th March 2020.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a blog post summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, retweet this tweet, boost this Mastodon post, check out this post on Reddit, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks like Facebook. Every share is extremely helpful – it’s what helped us get 11,000 responses last year.

Survey URL: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/gendercensus2020/

The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.

Thank you so much!

bottom left because it’s the one that changes size so I never have to change any of my habits for cooking different things

Bottom-right is clearly the best burner, because you don’t have to reach as far and the larger burner size heats the pot more evenly. Bottom-left is okay for boiling pasta and stuff like that, but I’ve *tried* making popcorn on the bottom-left burner and it *doesn’t cook right* because that burner is too small.

(results not applicable to stove designs in which the burners are not of different sizes, or designs where the sizes have a different pattern; possibly also not applicable to people significantly taller than 5′3″ or equivalently shorter stoves)

Friends, a poll: have you ever set yourself on fire, set one of your friends on fire, or been around while people were catching on fire as a side effect of avoiding boredom as a teenager?

No, except maybe for very broad definitions.

I did accidentally drip hot wax on myself (ow) while using a candle to light another candle as a pre-teen, and I did semi-accidentally burn my thumb on a cigarette lighter while trying to use it to light a campfire at age 13 (I didn’t *intend* the burn, but when I saw it was happening I didn’t try to stop it, because I was on my zillionth attempt to light this campfire and I decided that at this point not getting burned wasn’t worth having to start over again). However, I don’t think my body was ever itself actually on fire, and the burns were definitely not for purposes of avoiding boredom.

some mildly interesting things from the SSC survey

cptsdcarlosdevil:

mysticfurywerewolf:

oligopsalter:

i need to clean the dataset in a more systematic way – someone has no doubt already done this, but it’s good practice – but here’s a few things that struck me as interesting. note that i looked at a bunch of things and didn’t correct for that, that i looked at them in a sloppy way, and that of course i went right for mindkilling stuff.

for all the talk about consequentialism and scrupulosity, metaethics has approximately zero effect on how good of a person you think you are

nrx types should switch their conspiracy theories away from the jews puritans and towards quakers

comments section regulars are skewed in the way i’d expect, but i’m a bit surprised there are so few of them. imagine if we deployed even a fraction of argumate’s power…!

ressentiment is small but real (sample above straight cis men only; cis women have opposite trend but obv noisier) but the real trend is that the real incels have no opinion on feminism. (all nonresponse results are correlated with each other so that could be a part of it, idk. i said i was sloppy!)

everybody’s penis is huge

neat!

i’m still baffled by the graph for “find kink at least a little bit sexy”:

(last one is “explicitly none of the above”)

like, 6% even-a-little-furries?! how???

am i furry friends georg?! (i mean, trans, so yes, but.)

but even more puzzling, more doms than subs?!

like, confirmed by next question:

ssc truly is a bizarro world.

(i’d love to know if at least all the trans people are furries, and if the doms are super gross and thus outside my circles, but the sex data is unfortunately not in the public data set.)

Lactation fetish is more popular than foot fetish or furries? Only 12% like leather? It’s leather! Who is not at least a little bit turned on by chicks in leather?

I suspect the Dom Mystery might be that the single most common set of kinks among straight guys IME is like… lowkey dom? Like, they like tying you up, calling you a slut, being a bit forceful, maybe a bit of spanking, but they are really uninterested in most BDSM stuff. And those guys are usually not switches.

What do the 36.7% of people who don’t get off on any of the Generic Kinks jerk off to? I’m sort of concerned that the other 64% of us has made all the porn kinky and now they have no material.

I can’t speak for everyone who took the SSC survey and checked off “none of the above” on the Generic Kinks list, but I can speak for one of them:

It’s not that I don’t *have* fetishes, it’s that I have *very specific* fetishes that weren’t on the list. Good porn can indeed be tricky to find, but making more vanilla porn won’t help me at all: I’m not into that either.

Is this behavioral or linguistic question?

linguistic

Both, but I think I’m fighting a losing battle: I fairly often encounter statements that are completely nonsensical *unless* you interpret “porn” as necessarily being video (and in many cases, as being necessarily mass-produced and for-profit).

Banana Ripeness Tiers

guardians-of-the-food:

How do y’all eat your bananas?
1-5 anything else is gonna be baked or ice cream or smoothiefied

ainawgsd:

1-6. 7 or 8 maybe if I had a strong craving. Anything past that is inedible unless mashed and used as an ingredient in something

bilbo-swwaggins:

faun-songs:

4-7, 8 is pressing it.

absua:

White culture is eating unripe bananas.

artgroupie:

1-5?! i don’t go anywhere near under 8 unless it’s my only choice. ideal is 9-12

valsdas:

“8 is pressing it” i am… disgusted.gif

poison-liker:

i exclusively eat unripened bananas, on pizza

zephronias:

8,9,19. You all are weak.

captaindibbzy:

5 to 10 is my ideal.

xserpx:

8-11. They’re only good when they start getting little brown spots.

apprenticebard:

6-11. 9 is ideal.

Supposedly I had a great-grandfather who ate one entirely black banana every day, and who lived into his nineties, so I don’t think the overripe ones will hurt me, but after a certain point they taste weird. So once you get to 12, you have to make banana bread.

tchtchtchtchtch:

6 is the perfect sweet spot where it’s a nice vibrant yellow and perfectly ripe and doesn’t have any brown yet. So, that if I can, otherwise as close to it as possible.

another-normal-anomaly:

3-7, unripe bananas for the win. Also as per upthread I would be fascinated to find out if this is correlated with a) race or b) national origin. I mean, enjoyment of capsaicin and enjoyment of lots and lots of sugar are both correlated with national origin IIRC, so maybe banana preference is too.

Ideal banana: 11

Good banana: 10, 12, 13

Tolerable-but-I’d-rather-not banana: 9, 14, 15

Inedible banana: 8 and below

If it still has even the faintest trace of green, it’s not ripe enough.

Race: White*

National origin: United States (northeast)

Enjoyment of capsaicin: no

Enjoyment of lots and lots of sugar: not nearly as much as I used to, maybe just one “lot”

*Your mileage may vary. Some terms and conditions may apply. Your whiteness may be revoked at any time without notice.

Oh, actually, this is a good place to get survey data on an interesting question of linguistics. Could as many people as possible please take this survey on whether certain constructions seem grammatical to you so I can answer a problem that’s been bugging my household.

I’m not sure whether “homeschooled with English-language schoolbooks by a native-English-speaking mother” qualifies as “>10 years in an English-language school system” for your purposes. I clicked “no”, because normally when people ask me if I’ve spent >10 years in a school system the correct answer is “no”, but now I’m having second thoughts.

The Nonbinary/Genderqueer Stats Survey 2017

nonbinarystats:

nonbinarystats:

It’s time for the fourth annual nonbinary/genderqueer survey!

Last year there were over 3,000 participants, and I’d love it if we could beat that this year. If your gender isn’t fully expressed or described by the gender binary, you are enthusiastically invited to take part – regardless of the words (if any) that you use to describe your gender.

There are just 8 questions, and it doesn’t ask for your birth assignment or any identifying information.

[LINK]

If you’re nonbinary or thereabouts, or you know you’ve got followers who are, please consider reblogging this post. The statistics are really useful for visibility and activism worldwide.

You can see results from previous years here. The survey will be open for about three weeks, and closes no earlier than Monday 27th February 2017.

Thank you!

~

If you’d like to help promote, you can also retweet this tweet, visit this post on Reddit, post the URL on Facebook, or send it to someone you think might be interested: http://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/NBGQ2017/

In the ~7.5 hours since this survey was created there have been 1,000 responses, or 2.2 responses per minute. That’s pretty amazing! Thank you, everyone, for spreading the word so efficiently! :)

Something I’m quite happy to share with you before the survey is closed is the sites respondents are referred by…

Nonbinary Stats Survey

As you can see, we’re pretty Tumblr-heavy! So if folks were open to it, thinking about places you can share in addition to reblogging is a big help. :)

1,000 responses in under 8 hours is incredible! I’m hoping for around 3,500, just to aim a little higher than last year, and we are well on the way. You are all awesome.

For every state, I aimed for a number of responses equivalent to each state’s number of presidential electors – from 55 for California to 3 for Delaware, Vermont, Alaska etc. A few fell a little short as I was banned (my 10th Grindr ban to date) just before I could finish, though most matched or exceeded the target. The number next to each state is the number of responses I received, though the percentages are only taken from the responses that can reasonably be interpreted as a decisive answer – undecided voters, non-voters, and evasive responses are listed separately. Major candidates who received 0 votes are also listed.

In addition, 1.99% (6) voted for “Myself”, although these aren’t lumped together as they refer to separate individuals – namely, “WOOF!”, “MiamiLatino”, “nICE GUY!!!!!”, “2017 ready now”, “no pic don’t”, and “DatFckboi”. 0.66% (2) also voted for their own penis – 4 if we count pictures of a respondent’s penis as an actual answer to the poll.

Not counted towards the percentage are the following responses:

19                Undecided
60                None of the above
9                  Not eligible to vote
181              Evasive or unclear responses

“Evasive or unclear responses” can be roughly divided as follows:

55                Miscellaneous evasion
41                Explicitly declined to answer, “none of your business” etc
25                Irrelevant or incomprehensible
18               Too horny to engage politically
13               Total bewilderment
12               “Anyone but…” (10 Trump, 2 Clinton, 1 Johnson, 1 Stein)
7                 Overt hostility
3                 Nudes

Here are the number of states candidates win when only Grindr votes.

Hillary Clinton: 42 (6 as part of a tie)
Donald Trump: 13 (7 as part of a tie)
Bernie Sanders: 3 (3 as part of a tie)
Jill Stein: 1 (1 as part of a tie)
Evan McMullin: 1 (1 as part of a tie)
Deez Nuts: 1 (1 as part of a tie)

Ronald Reagan: 1 (1 as part of a tie)
″A giant meteor”: 1 (1 as part of a tie)
″My big fat cock”: 1 (1 as part of a tie)

In the electoral college, this should translate into the following numbers of electoral votes. When dealing with ties, electors are divided evenly between candidates.

Hillary Clinton: 472.167
Donald Trump: 46.667
Bernie Sanders: 4.5
Beyoncé: 3.5
Jill Stein: 2.667

Finally, here is the electoral map, according to Grindr.

Grindr 2016 Election 33
