john-boyaeger asked: My friend finally made me start watching Season 9 of RvB last night. I’ve been putting it off forever. I kept calling out peoples names and stuff right before they happened, so my friend was like “I thought you have never seen this…” to which I said “I haven’t, but I’ve virtually seen the whole thing in gif form on tumblr at this point.”

eponymous-rose:

Hee! Yeah, I always wonder how much people are picking up by osmosis with the bajillion things I reblog. (And hey, I’m in the middle of rewatching s9 right now!)

I also wonder what my blog’s cross-section of the show looks like to the people who’ve never actually watched it. Or the people who quit somewhere in the first five seasons.

While watching the S6 finale, I paused it for a bit to consider how this fit into all the fandom osmosis I’d received. (The thing that made me stop was hearing “when it goes off, I’ll be fine”, which was the quote on that Alpha fanart I can’t find because Tumblr sucks. I believe my exact thought-words were “oh fuck it’s true he’s going to die”.) After thinking it over, I concluded that nobody was actually going to die, because they all appear in gifsets and/or reaction posts set later.

This conclusion turned out to be mostly incorrect. I had vastly underestimated how complicated things like “life” and “death” and “existence” get when Leonard Church enters the picture.

[Year of Hell would have been a wonderfully written episode if the writers offered some explanation to why the knowledge of the temporal shield variance that they gained from Kes in a previous episode was completely ignored/forgotten. Seriously, what happened? Is the “Before and After” episode non-canon?]

It’s worse than that. Not only did she give them said chronoton counter-incantation, she explicitly told them to stay the fuck away from the Krenim.

This has bothered me for a very long time.

(I like the “every mid-late episode of Voyager takes place in a different alternate universe” headcanon, but while it definitely helps against the continuity pain, it’s not 100% effective.)

the good thing about me is that you can not talk to me for 3 weeks and then talk to me and I’ll be fine and still care about you the same way I did before

the bad thing is that I do that to people and they don’t understand that sometimes I just don’t feel like interacting with people.

#this is me #it drives me nuts #because i’ll try to pick up the same conversation three weeks later #and they’re all like huh #except online #y’all are pretty understanding that way #thank you (justice-turtle)

According to my parents, the first outward sign that toddler!me’s memory-span was starting to lengthen was that I developed a tendency to casually continue conversations I’d had with them a month ago. At first, they thought I was just saying things out of nowhere. It took them a while to figure out what was going on.

(I…try not to do that anymore. Mostly.)

Now that I look at it, it seems such a tiny thing. Without the broader context, the other straws on the camel’s back, it wouldn’t even be noticeable. It almost still wasn’t noticeable.

And yet…and yet there’s that word. “Stimulating”. Sex ought to be stimulating.

It’s a reminder of everything I hate about the kind of sex-positive sex-ed that’s standard in this subculture. I feel bad about hating it. I shouldn’t hate it. It’s the greatest good for the greatest number.

And yet.

And yet I’m sick of being excluded at every turn. I resent the way the kind of sex-ed epitomised by (though by no means exclusive to) Scarleteen stunted my sexual self-understanding, fed me information and advice consisting mostly of stuff that didn’t apply to me (sometimes the exact opposite of which applied to me) and told me it applied to everyone. I hate knowing that they didn’t even do anything wrong, because I’m such a fucking snowflake that I don’t deserve to expect anyone to ever acknowledge my existence.

(It isn’t my sexuality itself that I have a problem with. I like who I am. It’s the way it interacts with who everyone else is that gets to me.)

(Sexual pleasure is not a stimulant. It is a sedative. If I find a sexual act stimulating, that’s a sure sign that something has gone wrong and I need to change course.)

(addendum here)

Can you tell who this is?

dhalim:

image

My first gif! I spent way more time on this than I probably should have. Anywho, I put this together from a Brain Games episode on National Geographics (Episode name is called “Patterns” for those of you who are interested).

I want your feed back- when could you tell who this was the first time you saw the gif? Was it the 2nd text “Did you get it yet?”, or was it not until the 3rd or last text that you could tell? Please be honest.

My prediction- those with Prosopagnosia figure it out faster than those who are neurotypical (NTs). Why is this? Because we are used to piecing it together with less information, where NTs require more facial information before they know. Perhaps we just found the evolutionary advantage to prosopagnosia?

I suspected it might be Abraham Lincoln when I could only see around the edge, but the more they revealed, the less sure I got, until by the end I was convinced it wasn’t him. You tagged the post “Abraham Lincoln”, so I guess I should’ve gone with my first thought.

I note that when I took one of those online facial recognition quizzes, I had a similar experience with Barack Obama: my first thought was that it was him, but then I thought “no, that can’t be him, he isn’t that old” and failed the question (like I did every other question on that quiz). I’d forgotten how much politics ages you. (Though in Lincoln’s case, the “no, that can’t be him” was because this face looks too wide to be him.)

(Who says there has to be an evolutionary advantage? All a trait really has to do to stick around is not get you killed too often.)

My first ProsopAnonymous video is up! Tell me what you think!

Note: these will get better over time. I have a friend of mine working on an intro song for the show, so I’ll be able to add one by episode 2 or 3

It’s promising, but I suggest you try talking a bit more slowly. Your speech struck me as kind of rushed in a lot of places. This isn’t a conversation: nobody’s going to butt in and cut you off if you give them the slightest pause. (I swear I read somewhere that people actually do expect recordings to speak more slowly than live people, but I have no idea where.)

there was 11 slides but apparantly you can only put up 10 idk.

now you are probably properly educated on aussie cuisine. some of this shit is probs also not australian, but idgaf

I keep meaning to buy a package of Tim Tams at the local grocery store so I can know what all the fuss is about. Probably people will tell me that I can’t truly know until I’ve had Australian Tim Tams, that Canadian ones just aren’t the same, but they also said that about British vs American Cadbury and it wasn’t true. (Actually, our Tim Tams might even be imported from Australia. I’ll have to check that next time I’m at Zehrs.)

Speaking of Cadbury, I’ve had Crunchies, but I can never remember whether I like them. There are so many Cadbury products with weird names, and the vast majority of them are bad, so I generally just avoid all of them to be safe.

I saw fairy bread in a previous “look at the stuff you non-Aussies are missing out on” post, and I thought it sounded disgusting, but then I never liked sprinkles.

robin williams say it ain’t so

WHAT NOOOOOO

My first thought was “Oh god, what terrible thing did he say?”.

Then I saw that the next post on my dash was also about Robin Williams, and while the main body of that post was even less informative, it was tagged “death tw”.

And I was like, “Oh”.

I checked Google News to make sure I’d understood it right. Here’s what I found.

Same here. And this is the article I found in the National Post (pretty good I thought, though scads of pictures if that’s a bandwidth problem  for you).

I think I did know he’d dealt with depression over the years, so on that level I had context for it. But still. :-(

#watched a lot of his movies with my parents when we were first exploring popular culture #after living under a fundie Christian rock for years #fuck now I’ve gotta tell my mom #:( (nenya-kanadka)

After posting it, I went upstairs to tell my own mom. She’d already heard. When I went back to the living room, I tried telling my brother and found that he’d already heard too. Word gets around fast.

Mom and I have decided that we are going to watch Jumanji in his honour tomorrow, assuming we can figure out how to re-arrange the wires to get our currently unplugged VHS player hooked up again.
