Grilled cheese sandwiches are awesome, but grilled cheese from heaven delivered via parachute? That’s super awesome! And that’s exactly what has just started happening in New York City thanks to an Australian pop-up restaurant called Jafflechutes. We aren’t kidding, grilled cheese sandwiches really are falling from the sky and we wish we were in NYC right now.

“Jaffle” is an Australian term for grilled or toasted sandwiches. In 2013 three guys in Melbourne who really love jaffles (Adam, David and Huw) successfully crowdfunded their concept for delivering tasty jaffles via parachute – Jafflechute! One year later they decided to tempt Americans with the same offer, grilled cheese sandwiches delivered from on high. Their second fundraising campaign was a success and the jaffles are now descending to meet their destiny in the hands (and bellies) of hungry New Yorkers.

The setup is simple: The Jafflechutes crew posts when they’ll be working. Payment is submitted via PayPal and a delivery/drop time selected. At the appointed time the customer stands on an ‘X’ marked on the sidewalk outside the designated location and awaits the arrival of their very own jaffle. Provided the wind isn’t too strong, a yummy grilled cheese sandwich that’s been carefully wrapped up with a tiny parachute attached is then dropped from a window overhead.

But don’t worry if the wind is up. If your jaffle happens to get stuck in a tree, Jafflechutes says you won’t have to chase after it, they’ll make you another.

Click here to watch Jafflechutes in action.

Visit the Jafflechutes website to learn more. You can also follow them on Twitter and Instagram.

THIS IS THE BEST BUSINESS MODEL I HAVE EVER SEEN

Tempting! But where does one actually pay?

I think they only open for business occasionally, and take down the Paypal link when they’re not doing sales? That seems like the most plausible explanation for why I can’t find it anywhere.

Remember when you first discovered Tumblr and you would scroll down your dashboard until you reached the spot where you left the day before?

{{OP by kittiezandtittiez}}

comparativelysuperlative:

Yeah, I remember doing that, back before I found out about…uh, what exactly is it that we competent people do instead? I’m asking for a friend.

There are multiple aspects to this post, I think.

“The day before” implies only checking Tumblr once a day.

“Scroll down” implies reading in reverse-chronological order, though that might not actually be considered strange or noobish. (I personally find the spot where I left off last time, then work my way up, making heavy use of the “k” shortcut.)

The primary implication, however, is that an experienced Tumblr user eventually ends up following so many people that they cannot keep up with their dash, and resort to only reading some of it. (I personally try very hard to avoid this, and have been known to unfollow or not-follow-in-the-first-place people because of them posting too much.)

I hear people say “oh my god I hate people” all the time without backlash. everyone knows they don’t hate every single individual in humanity. they have friends and family they love and hang out with. they simply hate the greedy, corrupted, oppressive nature of some human beings.
but the minute we say something about white people or men, no one seems to understand that it’s the same concept.

How does that saying go? “The line between good and evil runs through every human heart”? Everyone is worthy of love, and everyone is worthy of hatred. No exceptions.

When I say I hate everyone (which, admittedly, I generally don’t do out loud, as it’s rather rude), I mean literally everyone. I mean my psychological barriers preventing me from contemplating why I ought to hate everyone have failed.

Said barriers are currently only in the alpha stage of development, and fail frequently: about 2 – 5 times a month, for about half an hour at a time. I’m working on it, though. I hope that one day, I’ll be able to repress my misanthropy as thoroughly as I do my mortality.

(I note that the anti-mortality barriers were a huge project, taking something like 2 – 3 years to develop to a point strong enough that I could talk about it without really thinking about it. I was around age 7 when I started it, so it was a big chunk of my total lifespan at that point. I don’t expect the anti-misanthropy barriers will be any easier, both in terms of how long it takes and in terms of the amount of pain suffered in the process.)

I really want fic where Odo enjoys being a public nudist.

…I never thought of Changeling goop as being red. Isn’t it more of a brown? I suppose calling it brown wouldn’t have that contrast with the brown uniform, but still.

(That wasn’t what I was supposed to take away from this quote, was it.)

A little gem from the ever educational Wall Street Journal

I am ashamed by how much trouble I had with this.

I didn’t have any trouble, but only because I ignored the actual faces. I have more than enough Tumblr fandom osmosis to match these names with their costumes.

(That’s assuming the face next to each name is the face associated with that name, though, which I suppose might not be true.)

Sticking tape on a frosted glass makes it see through. Air and glass have a very different refractive index, so if you have a rough glass surface, the incoming light is scattered in all directions, thus blurring the image you see through it.

Tape has a similar refractive index as glass, so if you stick it to frosted glass, the sticky material will fill out the little bumps in the glass. The non-sticky side is practically flat, so by sticking tape to the frosted side of glass that’s frosted on one side, you are essentially making it flat again, and making the glass clear.

Ooh, let’s try this at home!

*fetches tape*

*goes over to dining room window*

Hmm. Turns out, there’s two layers of glass here, and only the outside one is frosted. Bathroom window?

Nope, same here.

“Mom, do we have any windows that are frosted on the inside?”

“Is this that tape thing? Dad sent me that last night.”

“Yeah.”

“Dining room? Bathroom?”

“Nope, those are on the outside. I’m going out to the driveway to try the dining room from the other side.”

Bug netting *and* two layers of glass? Oh, come on!

I’m sorry, but I really struggle with accepting the phrase ‘check your privilege’, especially in this case. Knowledge that prosopagnosia is relatively common is less than a decade old, and is still being realised even to those who are studying it- statistics are still being estimated, and they can’t seem to quite agree. Barely anyone knows about it even now, and if they have heard about it, I guarantee they really don’t understand it.

Prosopagnosia is hard enough to diagnose and understand for people who have it, let alone for someone else who doesn’t. For a neuro-typical to recognise it in other people or understand how it affects someone who does have it, this just isn’t really something I expect at this point.

Facial recognition is not a privilege, and it doesn’t allow you certain ‘rights’; it is an ability that some people lack. Perhaps I can’t speak for everyone, but I do not find the Prince Charming meme offensive in the slightest, because it’s so true! To me, it’s downright funny and does not deserve the commentary seen above.

The phrase “facial-recognition privilege” reeks of troll to me. It’s a standard anti-SJW tactic: manufacture evidence that they can later point to as proof that we are ridiculous people who deserve their mockery. (“Check your privilege” is one of the go-to phrases in such manufacturing.) I mostly hear of this technique being used on otherkin, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve decided to branch out.

Even though I love this idea of Gallifreyans as a species having prosopagnosia, I’m still not sure if it’s actually true, since the Doctor has the habit of commenting his face and it’s distinct features (the chin, the eyebrows, i.e.) relatively often. I don’t know much about prosopagnosia and therefore I’m not sure whether it’s possible for people having/suffering from it to make such remarks. Does anybody know something more about that?

We can totally do that! In fact, things like distinctive eyebrows or sticky-out ears (the focus of Nine’s comments) are a big part of how we tell people apart.

*sets entire english language on fire*

So this is actually a half-cool half-frustrating phenomenon called a cran morpheme.

Cran morphemes are morphemes that don’t have a meaning outside of the thing they designate. The ur-example, of course, is cranberry. Unlike blueberry (blue + berry), where the first morpheme is somewhat descriptive of the actual berry itself (blueberries are, after all, blueish), the cran- in cranberry doesn’t give you any more help than “this designates the type of berry we call cranberries”. The snozz- of snozzberry is similar.

It is true that cran- comes eventually from “crane” and that cranberries might have been named that because cranes ate them or something, but appealing to this invokes the etymological fallacy. That is, no one who uses or learns the word today thinks of cranes when they talk about cranberries. (Etymologists, lexicographers, and linguists don’t count as native speakers, as usual.)

Even so, the etymology doesn’t help us here, because the word that the cuttle- of cuttlefish comes from just means “cuttlefish” anyway. It’s cuttles all the way down.

The most important question to me is, can I call them cudelefish to emphasize their cuddliness?

It’s like that urban legend of Hillhillhill Hill.
