Prosopagnosia Dream

dhalim:

The dream itself was kinda ridiculous. I was among a group of magicians who was having to battle an invading magician army from taking over this labyrinth-like town, and battle was supposed to happen outside the city gates which were at least 30 feet tall. However, the gates were set up on an incomplete grid just outside the town, and in my dream, it made complete sense that if someone was having trouble defending one side, we just moved it further back and defended it there (??? I don’t get it either). Anyway, we took our positions on top of the gate, balancing on what was ultimately this fence only a couple inches across, and somehow expecting to throw magic down at the invaders? Except the invaders wound up coming up to us, and I was forced down to ground-level where the invading force was closing in.

I ran off to the side, to this little shack and on my way, I nearly ran into a woman who had bleach blond dread locks, who I didn’t recognise. Looking at her, I couldn’t decide if she was friend or foe, but when I didn’t attack, she kept running. The battle was hardly fierce, mostly just people running around, and I can’t be sure if I actually saw a face, or just dread locks and told myself a face was somewhere in there because it was supposed to be. Either way, in the dream itself, I suddenly felt overwhelmed because I literally couldn’t tell if anyone running around me as I went into the shack to hide was on my side or the invading side, and I didn’t want to attack anyone in case I guessed wrong. What if someone attacked me and they just couldn’t tell if we were on the same side or not, and I defended myself and killed them?

Worst of all, when I entered the shack, the man inside told me to get back out there and defend the town, but I couldn’t because I no longer knew who I was defending, and had to try to explain my perceived cowardice. I wound up waking up half way through my crap explanation, but I tried for several minutes to go back to sleep so I could finish telling him why. Sometimes dreams really suck.

And that is why we invented military uniforms.

“i was in the sherlock fandom once” is the new embarrassing twilight phase

DON’T YOU DARE COMPARE SHERLOCK TO TWILIGHT

apologies to all twilight fans

Having recently read the post highlighted in yellow on this page*, this actually sounds about right. They’re both situations where the canon is pretty mediocre, but its existence is still worthwhile because it’s inspired other people to write stuff that’s actually good. (And also Fifty Shades, but that’s not my point here.)

Mind you, it sounds less right when you consider the OP said specifically being in the Sherlock fandom. The fandom’s pretty good, in my experience (though I do seem to have a knack for avoiding the bad parts of fandoms). It’s just the canon that’s bad.

*Sorry, person who linked to this on their Tumblr a few days ago. I’d link you if I could remember who you were.

(All this requires to happen is a month with 31 days to start on a Friday.  This will happen May 2015, January 2016… and on and on.)

justice-turtle:

*backreads post notes* Ooh, thanks for the math, verilidaine. I figured there had to be some kind of “it won’t happen again in August till blah de blah” thing going on, but couldn’t quite figure out the specifics.

I also figured it was specifically August, but even that has a next-occurrence date of merely 2025. (Source: my computer’s calendar function. It has a “move forward one year” button, which I clicked repeatedly until I found an August ending on Sunday. Feel free to find a calendar program with the same button if you want to double-check.)

(I feel a little bad about reblogging this, because I recently saw someone make a blog comment along the lines of “look, this total-bullshit Tumblr post has 20,000 notes, lol stupid teenagers” and reblogging this is providing more fodder for that sort of thing (it wasn’t the first time I’ve seen that type of post, and I doubt it will be the last). I’m trying to tell myself it’s their own fault for basing their ageist insults on a critical misunderstanding of how the note system works. Not sure how much it’s helping.)

Can you survive in space without a spacesuit?

Guardians of the Galaxy has re-ignited the age-old question. Or this slightly different question, asked by Adam Frank, how do you die in space? Here’s some answers.

You know the answer to the question “what happens in space if you aren’t wearing a spacesuit” is going to be “very bad things”, but just what those bad things are is the interesting part.

Also, hi Eric!

(that’s my friend Eric in the video)

I think we’ve learned a valuable lesson today: if you are about to be exposed to vacuum, expel as much of the air in your lungs as possible.

(“Don’t be exposed to vacuum at all” is also a valuable lesson, but I feel confident we all knew that one already.)

i can and will judge anyone who pays to see 50 shades of grey and is excited about it

Why? People got excited over Sharknado too. Bad movies can be fun.

As for people who are excited in a non-trainwreck-y way, I get the impression that most of them are people who never learned to access some of the more X-rated wonders of the Internet, either because they didn’t have a chance to get their how-do-computer phase over with while they were still in diapers, or because they lived and continue to live in subcultures where porn was prohibitively socially unacceptable, or both. (And really, if getting caught with porn (even by my friends) would make me a pariah, I probably wouldn’t take the risk either. Especially if I believed them when they said it was immoral, and I would have little reason not to.) They have consequently been porn-starved their entire lives, and are clinging in desperation to anything they can get. Such people may deserve our pity, and our aid if we can find ways of giving it to them, but not our mockery.

yes

it has passed the ultimate test

WHY DID I NEVER THINK OF THIS?????

Warning: May not be applicable in Deep Space Nine fandom.

My first thought was “What have you got against the Prophets?”. Only then did I remember the whole eye thing.

(If only the use of “sex” to mean “vulva” were so easy to search for. I’ve been running into that a lot lately.)

ppl are always like “no game is perfect you can’t please EVERYbody” but when was the last time you heard a motherfucker complain about portal

I’m only complaining about it because Steam claims it will now run Portal under Linux, but I’ve been trying to get it to work for three or four days now and it still won’t run. The game’s good (I got maybe two-thirds of the way through it back on Windows, Land of Things Just Working), if you can get it to start.
