So, is this some weird perspective shot, or a scene from Inception? Because there’s no way you could climb (let alone drive) up a hill of the angle that appears to be without using the grass as handholds, and they’ve paved over the grass.

(The poppy pin shown above is either old-fashioned or foreign, I’m not sure which. This is what a modern-day Canadian poppy pin looks like. I’m not complaining about the CSA’s choice of picture, but I thought I should give you the correct mental image for what I’m about to tell you.)
The importance Canadians place on Remembrance Day and World War I is probably the biggest thing that surprised me about Canada. I had no idea until after I moved here.
My first November here, the very first time I ever saw someone wearing a poppy pin, I told her I liked her flower. She was rather surprised. I was nearly fourteen: surely I knew what a poppy pin was? But I didn’t, and the people there had to explain to me.
The first time someone referenced “In Flanders Fields” in front of me, I didn’t know what they were talking about. They were surprised: surely I’d had to memorise it in school a few grades back? But I hadn’t, and they had to explain to me.
I memorised it on my own not long after that; I wanted to be more a part of my adopted country. I visited two World War I museums to learn the things a Canadian ought to know. I bought a poppy pin from one of the countless donation boxes for the Royal Canadian Legion, and I try to wear it whenever leaving the house during the first eleven days of November, as Canadians do. This is my country too, now, and its customs are mine.

you can also view ignored users if you go to settings -> account and scroll to the bottom. there’s a pencil to the side, which i thought would allow me to add/remove ppl from the block list, but it doesn’t appear to be working
STILL, i urge everyone to send in messages to staff because sometimes the person you want to block doesn’t send you messages or put things in the tags; sometimes the person leaves the most obnoxious and/or abusive comments when they reblog things and how the fuck are you supposed to get rid of those people????
I don’t get it. Looks fine to me. Did they put it back?

Ignoring the actual content…
I love the fact that I could read all of this.
This is my average reading pace for most things. Of course, it’s easier when you use an app that does flash-training like this.
If people want to get the Spritzlet app and tell me how long it takes to read the same text with and without it, I’ll be able to figure out how well it usually works and whether the few people I have data on so far are wacky outliers.
I can almost keep up with the text stream here, but not quite.
I really don’t get the appeal of Spritz. One of the primary advantages of text is that it will sit there and wait for you until you decide to move on, and you can easily skip back and read over the previous paragraph again if you didn’t quite understand it or you want to savour a good turn of phrase. This streaming method has all the hyper-linear bullshit of audio, only even more overly fast. Why not just listen to a sped-up podcast? Unless the intended audience is deaf people who want the sped-up-podcast experience, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

I used to have this when I was a kid. It turned out I just really hate nightlights and bed-sharing. Once I started sleeping in my own bed, with only the indirect, faint light of streetlights through Venetian blinds, I was pretty much fine.
I’m not saying that everyone’s insomnia is that easily cured, but it worked for me, and I doubt I’m the only one. There are probably people like ten-year-old me out there right now, taking two hours to fall asleep every night and wrongly thinking that’s just how things are.
Right? “I won’t be youthful and desirable, wah, woe is me.”

Huh. So, I went to Good Ol’ Youtube to learn more about this, wondering if ASMR was related to the weird (mostly unpleasant) sensations I get when I watch injections or piercing. (You never want me to come with you to a piercing or tattoo appointment, because I will twitch my head and shoulders uncontrollably to block out the sensations.) Turns out no, ASMR is similar, but not nearly so intense or unpleasant. (Though it can veer into it if I pay too close attention.)
And that’s how I ended up accidentally feeling much better and more relaxed after an emotional day. Thanks, random ASMR people on Youtube! I learned something new today!
I actually have heard of this before, but I thought my readers might not have.
(Be careful of those “roleplaying close personal attention” ones. The first explanation of ASMR I came across included a link to one of those, and my reaction to it was not so much “ooh nice” as “oh god she’s coming through the fourth wall to get me *tries to back away through the couch*”.)
