I saw Scott posted this and I was really hoping to scroll down and see some plausible argument that this all stems from the elimination of lead.
Seriously though, this is good stuff to keep in mind.
About that second one, not that their point isn’t true, but the decade they selected was the 1940s. OK, so we’re not in the middle of a world war! Go us! But I’d really prefer a more typical and less cherry-picked example.
Agreed. I seem to recall that a previous time I saw someone use the 1940’s for this, someone responded with an explanation of how it’s still true even if you don’t use a world-war decade. However, I have no idea where I saw that, so take plenty of salt.
The first time I saw a calculation of how much data was on the Internet, it was five petabytes. To think, just a few years ago the entire Internet could be stored inside Data’s brain, with room to spare. We’ve come so far.

Right now this would be a very bad idea! Hits on a blog are, as it happens, a quantifiable thing that changes every minute and tends to go up when I work harder. When presented with things like this, my brain adopts them as the totality of its self-esteem and stops working on all goals that are harder to measure/optimize.
(last time I tried this I failed all my classes. I really suck at incentives.)
However! I have attained a software internship this summer and I should have more free time and capacity-to-motivate-myself-to-do-my-homework is less relevant and it would be really cool to have a real blog. So maybe I’ll do it then.
Perhaps there’s a way of preventing yourself from being able to see the analytics? Like that add-on that hides your Tumblr follower count. (I don’t know what add-on that is, but one of my friends has mentioned using it, so I know it exists.)
I don’t know you well enough to even hazard a guess at how difficult undoing the blocking would need to be for it to be effective, but it’s something to consider if and when you start looking into getting a long-form blog.

It’s all Harry’s fault. Well, partially. I suppose Voldemort can be saddled with an equal portion of the blame. The point is, the Dursleys were just minding their own business when a horcrux was dumped on their doorstep. For the next decade it proceeded to warp their minds, turning them from your garden variety insufferable human beings into horrible, heartless monsters. The fact that they survived such prolonged horcrux exposure without delving into insanity or abandoning a helpless child only solidifies their place among the pantheon of noble and virtuous heroes in the Harry Potter universe.

I’ve drawn a few creepy twisty Odos before, but I really wanted to explore what it might’ve been like in the show aand I wanted to draw more Odo being twisty. So this little comic sprung out of that!
This was a fun exercise and I learned a lot while putting it together. Like how much I love drawing Quark.

Not fucking surprised. I knew that the FBI was conducting a dedicated smear campaign against him and that anyone lobbying for Black civil rights was officially considered a communist sympathizer, therefore a threat to national security. MLK had just led / been part of the biggest civil rights march in history (where he gave his “I Have a Dream” speech); it makes a lot of sense that the government of the day would decide he was a threat to be “neutralized in any way possible”, as the line goes.
And it makes a lot of sense that the mainstream media wouldn’t report it when the government was found guilty. Does the mainstream media report anything prejudicial to the government as a whole? They do not. They report plenty of stuff prejudicial to individual politicians, and they print a fair number of op-ed pieces saying whatever their target audience thinks about current wars etc, but something huge like this? Something that would upset the “official” view of The Great And Awesome Progress Of Civil Rights As A Government-Supported Thing From The Emancipation Proclamation To The Present Via Martin Luther King To The First Black President? NOT ON YOUR TINTYPE.
Personally, my bullshit alarm started ringing at “enemies of freedom”. Also, Source 1 is Wikipedia, whose own sources don’t make the trial look very legit from what I can tell, and Source 3 and Source 5 are both from conspiracy-theorist sites.

Your surname is right there on the “About” page of your WordPress. Assuming neither of them shares it, that’s how to find out they’re not you. If one of them does share a reasonably common surname with you, that’s not enough evidence to assume, but it is enough to ask.

It occurred to me, while I was thinking about this post, that Star Trek already has mind-uploading capabilities.
It is canon that the Borg keep copies of every mind they assimilate, which survive beyond the deaths of the drones they were copied from.
It is canon that under certain conditions, minds can be precipitated out of the hive-mind solution, even if you don’t have their original brain handy.
And, on second thought, the Trill also do exactly this, though under circumstances that are likely to have a lot more limitations.
(Huh, there are actually two Star Trek episodes focusing on how people there can live indefinitely, but only if they spend almost all the time as part of a hive mind, with no reasons given for why the technology couldn’t be used in a completely non-assimilating manner.)
The Feds have already used adapted stolen Borg technology to save lives. Think how many more they could save if they went a bit further.
