Like, I learned math from books. So of course the first time I talked about the “Lap-lace transform” I got some weird looks.
I wonder if that Euler guy and that Euclid guy were related? :) Since, you know, their names obviously begin with the same syllable.
(A friend I was hanging with last night learned programming on his own, so he says “ARray” rather than “arRAY,” which is rather charming actually.)

Luh-PLOSS. More or less. (I’m from Indiana, even when I’m trying to pronounce French properly there’s a definite… lack of Frenchitude there. ^_^)

The moss-troll problem, or, Accidental Worldbuilding Through Metaphors
I read “the sea serpent had eyes the colour of NyQuil” and imagined them as being sky blue. When I got to the moss-troll bit, I thought “ah, so moss-troll ichor is light blue then”. It wasn’t until finishing the article that I remembered: I have no idea what NyQuil looks like.
This is probably some meaningful statement on metaphors in itself, but I’m not quite sure what.

Doppelganger Wizard for the Win. Not literally for the win; I’ve only ever ascended in vanilla Nethack rather than SLASH’EM, but you know what I mean.
Oh hey, more people play NetHack! It’s on my list of ways to kill a…week…if I ever happen to have no obligations.
I’M PLAYING SLASH’EM AGAIN BECAUSE OF THIS POST THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA.
Decided that I’d start off by winning, since I haven’t played in a while, so I rolled up a doppelganger Wizard, and what should I start with but a ring of polymorph control. This is a very promising turn zero.
Sounds good. Doppelgangers are fun, from what I recall of Slash’em. I mostly stuck to vanilla Nethack, though, and I haven’t even played that in quite a while. I go to Crawl for my roguelike fix these days.
I’ve never technically ascended in Nethack (I have ascended once in Crawl, as a Spriggan Enchanter), but I do have a Wizard that is basically omnipotent and could pretty much win any time I wanted. I wanted to do it extinctionist, because small-child me loved reading Nethack guides (probably even more than she loved playing it) and that challenge sounded like one to try. I’m mostly there, but I got bored, drifted away, and…dear gods, I think that was two computers ago. That’s at least three and a half years. (I copied the savefile from the old computer, and copied it again when I moved to this one on the off chance I ever decide to pick it up again. I figure it’s not savescumming if you’re only messing with the savefile to cheat out-of-universe virtual death.)
I’m rusty enough that I’d probably have to play some other Nethack games before going back to that one, to reduce the chances of forgetting some detail or other and making a fatal mistake. I still love reading game guides, but I haven’t read any Nethack ones lately.
(Did you know you can play Rogue in a browser emulator? I keep meaning to try it out. It seems like an experience I should have.)

I once came across a forum that had “like” and “hug” buttons. They were thinking along the right lines.
Valentine’s Day is really pissing me off this year, and it’s not for a reason I’ve seen articulated anywhere.
See, I would love to get in on that. It’s like — there’s a day that’s specifically for appreciating people and telling them how much they mean to you, right? I want to be all over that. I want to send you all messages full of giant hugs (or your preferred expression of caring and support) and, like, just scatter happiness everywhere.
But it’s also a day for celebrating romance and mono-love, and I… I feel like I’m gonna come across wrong if I try to co-opt it for my own little aro poly friendlove celebration. But I really want to… to join in the love-sharing energy everybody’s goddamn blasting across my dash and my life this time of year, and I’m scared to, and that makes me fucking cranky. :P
I, for one, am totally in favour of broadening the scope of Valentine’s Day. Or rather, bringing the broadened scope I was raised with to the rest of society.
(As for seeing it articulated, I swear I saw people talking about this on the Asexual Agenda a couple years ago, but now I can’t find it.)

Heart attacks symptoms are different for women. I recently learned this.
Everyone should know these things.
thanks to mainstream media and being unable to show breasts on TV, way too few people know about female signs of cardiac distress, and impending heart attacks. they only know about the “pain in the left arm” male symptom.
i had all these symptoms once and they sent me right to hospital
it was scary bc i didnt know these were the symptoms for female heart issues
Please, please, PLEASE, reblog this. i don’t know if I did save or called false alarm, with my boss’ life tonight. I felt I was being a bit paranoid, overreacting, but I told Mirage my thoughts and he, after reading over the article I showed him, immediately sprung into action and then shooed her off to the hospital. I don’t know if I did or not, but I knew she’d been super stressed. She’d off-handedly commented on her arm tingling and I asked her if she felt queasy on a hunch. I went to look at the symptoms and we went from there.
Holy shit, I didn’t even think the symptoms would be different between men and women. This is so hugely important and I don’t understand why we aren’t taught this.
One of the other symptoms that doesn’t get talked about , especially in women, is a “feeling of impending doom”. I am not even kidding, that is a legitimate diagnostic criteria.
Please – if you are feeling any of these symptoms and a sudden onset of “Holy shit the world is ending” do not let anyone tell you it’s “just nerves” or “just heartburn” or something.
Buddy of mine having a minor cardiac episode DID get eventual left arm pain—but she got jaw pain first and shortness of breath. Pay attention!
Worth noting that even if you focus on cis people, heart attack symptoms don’t divide up neatly into “male” and “female”. These are symptoms disproportionately experienced by women, but be wary of them no matter what your reproductive phenotype. Conversely, be wary of the “male” symptoms regardless of phenotype.
The website listed on the infographic acknowledges this, using phrases like “women are more likely than men to” and “women are twice as likely as men to”, but I figure not everyone will look at the website.
(Does anyone else think they shouldn’t have said “any one of these symptoms” about a list including nausea? It seems like a pretty bad idea to treat every bout of nausea like it could be a heart attack.)

Is he “holding” the communicator somewhere inside his body in liquid state? These are the things I get distracted thinking about!]
Me too, OP. Me too.
(I mostly figure he’s holding it inside his body, but I’m not sure that top at the end of “Shadowplay” had any parts big enough to hide a communicator in. Also, being able to embed objects in your body seems like an ability with a much wider range of applications than just someplace to put your combadge, but shapeshifting is pretty under-utilised in general.)
