nevermindbinarity asked: WHYYY (also the way you formatted the link was clever!)

itsbenedict:

(I’m gonna put this in drafts and post it in a couple days, once the story’s over.)

the answer to “WHYYY” is mainly “there really wasn’t any other plausible outcome”. like, if it didn’t happen this way, it would have happened some other way, because there’s no chance in hell Arc would ever have been able to do what it took to avoid it.

(even though “what it takes to avoid it” is just “not making all these complicated strings of terrible decisions”.)

(spoilers under cut)

(more spoilers)

Yeah, I was wondering at first why the hell anyone would believe O when they claimed to be J, since surely they’ve proven themself to be completely untrustworthy from the staff’s POV. And then I thought, it doesn’t really matter in the end. Arc could never be satisfied with the situation as it stands. They would always be determined to get their memory back, die trying, or–as it happens–both. If they didn’t die to the fungus on iteration O, they’d die to it in a future iteration, or get themself shot when they pissed off one of the people-with-guns one time too many. They really were doomed from the moment they were infected.

Although it’s not really enough to manifest over the few cycles we see, the process does progressively cordon off more of the brain over time

It doesn’t manifest? Was I reading too much into the fact that N can come up with a not just a plan, but a plan for how to hide their real plan, in the few seconds they have between seeing Orchard and having Orchard come after them, but O has quotes like this:

He turned to me. “Sorry- quick question- what’s your name?”

I froze. What did he need my name for?

[chain of reasoning cut for space]

“Hey. Your name. Can you tell me?” Gah! I wasn’t done thinking! I held up a finger for silence.

[more reasoning]

I’d paused too long. The guard was getting suspicious. “I’m just asking. This isn’t a trick or anything, just… what’s your name?”

And this:

Everything was happening too fast. I couldn’t stop and think through every implication of what they were saying- they kept saying things, without giving me time to analyze it! I couldn’t move, I couldn’t make a judgment- had 5 gotten her to say that somehow? Is that what someone who’d had their cover blown would say out loud? No, but- it explained 5’s behavior, it was plausible- but it could be a trick. HOW could it be a trick? What was Helium even saying, oh, she was saying more things now-

I mean, when I saw the bit about brain damage with each reset, I kind of figured the problem was that O thinks more slowly than N does.

*Potentially*, Arc could be cured with a specialized treatment plan and a really high-security facility, where they just lock them in with no human contact and no clues whatsoever, and hope they don’t work it out for themselves over months of time to think and theorize and potentially hit upon the right solution by chance. Maybe stick a lot of books and video games in there to distract them with?

Is there a reason why keeping a patient continuously unconscious for six months wouldn’t work, or is it just impractical for them to actually do?

(At first I wondered if you could even avoid the need for amnesia by doing that, but I suppose even if it would theoretically work and they had enough supplies, it would be hard to ensure people are always completely unconscious and not dreaming of elephants.)

Did anyone else have trouble finding the face in this picture? It’s called an optical illusion, but that’s a lie and it took me nearly 10 years to finally find the darn thing. It’s in the bottom centre, btw.

5 – 10 seconds? That was after reading “Did anyone else have trouble finding the face in this picture?“ and before reading “It’s in the bottom centre, btw“, so I knew more or less what I was supposed to be looking for but not where. It didn’t really jump out at me, but nor was it especially difficult to track down when I was deliberately searching for it. I don’t know how much harder it would have been if I’d just been told “there is a hidden thingy in this picture” and not what it was.

Did someone just message me? There was a “1″ on the messaging button, but I don’t see any new messages in the drop-down list of past chats.

Not me, but I’ve been having that happen at intervals too. Sometimes the message shows up later. No notes on patterns yet.

This is the first time it’s happened to me, but I’m not surprised others have been having the same issue. I’ll keep an eye on the drop-down list, and if there was someone behind it and they’re reading this, you might want to try contacting me again.

Mechanical Principles by Ralph Steiner (1930)

Every time I see this post I interpret it as an abstract critique of pornography.

every time i see this post i interpret it as literal pornography

i keep seeing random infrastructure or buildings or tram wires or whatever that i want to fuck it’s sort of distracting

Oh good, it’s not just me.

…the “interpreting it as literal pornography”, I mean, not the “wanting to fuck infrastructure”. (Not that there’s anything wrong with wanting to fuck infrastructure.) It’s not the mechanical aspect that makes it parse as pornographic to me, but rather the rhythmic motion: the first thought that goes through my mind when I see this post is always “ah, this must be the latest entry in the hypno-fetishists’ attempts to one-up each other with increasingly creative spiral GIFs”.

(how much do you want to bet that Justice Stewart would not know this when he saw it?)

(at last, you are mine again)

That’s some fucking next level tagposting right there.

DS9 Hug (Next-Level Tagposting)

Do you mean that in a good way or a bad way? (I suppose the hug gif is probably a good sign?)

(Tumblr’s tag-inspired register is good for some things–particularly when one wants to mimic the aspect voice-based conversation often has of shifting fluidly from one topic to another with no obvious places to put sentence or paragraph breaks–but I still have trouble bringing myself to write much of it in the main body of a post, so I rely a little more heavily on tags to communicate than might be ideal. As you can see, the main body of this post is really serving the function of a post title rather than an actual body.)

@ilzolende and I were discussing linguistic sound change. I mentioned I’d read that ת (tav) has gone from ‘th’ in Biblical Hebrew to ‘t’ in Modern Hebrew and ‘s’ for some Ashkenazim; while ב (bet) and ו (vav) merge for (some) Sephardim, because of Spanish b/v merger.

Which eventually led to this story:

The Gileadites encamped at the Jordan and waited to slaughter the retreating Ephraimites. To distinguish them, they asked all comers to say ‘shibboleth’, because the Ephraimites could not pronounce the /sh/ phoneme and instead said it as /s/.

Gileadite 1: …So then you kill anyone who mispronounces ‘shibboleth’. Understood?

Gileadite 2: Understood.

(Modern) Israeli: Shalom!

Gileadite 2: Hey, we’re testing nationality. Say ‘shibboleth’.

Israeli: Uh, OK. ‘shibbolet’?

Gileadite 2: …u wot, mate?

Israeli: I said ‘shibbolet’, just like you asked.

Gileadite 2: Um, wrong, I guess. *slash*

Gileadite 1: No no no! That wasn’t an Ephraimite! That was a… Weirdo. Anyway, we’re just killing people who say /s/, dude. Listen for a /s/.

Gileadite 2: OK, got it.

Ashkenazi: Shalom!

Gileadite 2: Hey, we’re testing nationality. Say ‘shibboleth’.

Ashkenazi: Oy vey, what is this ‘shibboles’ thi-

Gileadite 2: *slash*

Gileadite 1: NO! We’re checking if they say /s/ at the beginning, man! The beginning!

Gileadite 2: Make up your MIND.

[One diversity training session later]

Gileadite 2: *sigh* OK. Sibboleth: Kill. Shibboleth: Let through. Shibbolet or Shibboles: Turn away. That’s everyone, right?

Gileadite 1: Yep. Good luck!

Sephardi: Shalom!

Gileadite 2: Hey, we’re testing nationality. Say ‘shibboleth’.

Sephardi: Um, why ‘shivolet’?

Gileadite 2: *throws down sword* Fuck it, I QUIT.

Shibbolef?

Watch Episode 3 of our new original show series Margot vs Lily: http://gonike.me/MargotvsLilyEp3

Saw this tumblr promoted post in my feed and assumed it was a hypno porn gif …

That’s happened to me a couple times.

Same, though not this specific one. I wonder if tumblr’s got an ad consultant who just sits around helping companies make ads that appeal tangentially and subtly to weird kinky shit.

Did anyone else read that post theorising that Tumblr is using pornbots to inflate the note counts on sponsored posts, so they can say to the sponsoring companies “Look at how much exposure you’re getting! You’ve got X likes, Y reblogs, and Z follows! don’t look too closely at the composition of those numbers”?

Sex sells, indeed.

(Okay, yes, there’s also the “salience mechanisms cause fetishists to see kink in everything” explanation, but still.)

so assuming the person ahead of me takes the light sprite because they’d be an idiot not to, and assuming I’m not missing something more valuable in the prizes list, I’m going to be the proud(?) new owner of a set of sunchaser jewelry

which frankly I find fucking ugly but hey it’s 40k gems worth of ugly ;-)

idk if I should hang onto it until mid-june for a better price or whether the prices up there in the stratosphere even fluctuate the way normal under-a-million holiday skin prices do

As someone whose goals re: Kickstarter familiars require her to learn some proverbial ropes up here in the stratosphere (I’ve almost reached 90kg pure, and I’m currently trying to sell off several pieces of first-year apparel), first-year Festive Favors stuff hardly seems to fluctuate at all. Or rather, it’ll go up and down by relatively small (objectively rather large*) amounts according to how many people happen to be selling at the moment and how desperate they are, but I haven’t noticed any trends. When I bought my Light Sprite in…*checks* late May, it was for 40kg right before the price shot up to 60kg. When I looked at prices again a couple months later, it was back to 40 – 45kg. Around…maybe October, I don’t think I have a record for this and I’m bad at dating my memories…they were 30kg, and I bought a second one hoping to flip it. Shortly thereafter, they were back up to 40 – 45kg, and I spent the next few months** trying to sell it off, finally succeeding a few days ago.

Note that last sentence. It’s important to understand just how low the demand is for stratospherically-priced items. You’ve seen a lot of people say stuff like “Light Sprites are so expensive, I’ve given up on ever affording one”, right? Those people are never going to buy a 40kg item from you: you’re limited to selling to the fairly small number of people who both didn’t give up on one day having that much money and are currently being successful at actually having that much money. Buyers aren’t that easy to come by.

Relatedly, it’s pretty hard to sell items that expensive via the AH. Even people who have that much worth tend not to have it in liquid currency. Mixed payment is almost always the only practical way to sell something like Sunchaser. I spent several weeks with a Light Sprite on the AH to no avail, except for a few PMs from people offering mixed payment for it that didn’t pan out or whose value was way too low. When I made a forum thread offering it for sale? Got a decent offer within a few hours. I mean, I might have especially lucky with that thread, but still.

(Said decent offer was almost entirely that retired apparel I’m currently trying to sell off. I figured I’d have a better shot at liquidating several things worth a few thousand gems each that trying to find someone with 40kg in currency. Even with the smaller stuff, sometimes you still have to do mixed payment: that’s how I got rid of the Frigid Fugitive Shackles the Light Sprite buyer gave me. I may open another thread for whatever apparel remains in a couple weeks, but I am not touching the Items For Sale forum in these final days of trust-trading.)

tl;dr items that high in value fluctuate constantly by thousands of gems, but not with predictable direction or timing afaict (not even an overall upward trend over a one-year span); selling super-expensive stuff is hard because it’s hard to find a buyer who can afford it; be prepared for the process of turning a single 40kg item into usable funds to be long and multi-part.

*This is the primary reason why nearly all of my KS fund is in gems, and I’m working on getting even more of it into gems. You know where you stand with gems.

**Sort of: I took December and the first couple weeks of January off from FR, so they don’t really count.

Deeper For Me: I’m Changing My Major to Kink

{{Title link: http://deeperforme.blogspot.it/2016/03/im-changing-my-major-to-kink.html }}

ellaenchanting:

hypno-sandwich:

deeperforme:

Oh my god last night. Oh my god, ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod last night…

I’ve lost my virginity three times: Once when a woman touched me, with intent, for the first time (my first intercourse, only a week or two later, is almost an afterthought in my memory); once when I pinned a submissive girlfriend to the carpet and first saw that look in her eyes; and once when I hypnotized someone for the first time. After each one, the world changed.

Read on for my pre-NEEHU opus, about fighting programming that says it’s wrong to spend all this time, money and energy pursuing kinky sex. I put in video clips and quotes!

If we’re friends…
If you follow me…
If you read one thing about kink…
If you care about joy and love and living free from fear….
Read this.

On embracing something joyous. :)

Opening yourself up to desire and passion takes courage. Makes you silly and vulnerable, like Alison in her underpants. My friend has a line about how much safer it is just to fantasize alone in the dark – besides the obvious risks of going out and doing things, you also risk having your cherished masturbation fantasies touched by disappointment, embarassment, sadness, all the complications that come with doing things with real people, in the real world.

The upside? Having my wildest dreams come true.

…I honestly can’t tell if there’s something wrong with this post, or if it just caught me at a really bad time.

When I talk about losing my taste for mind-control-as-such and focusing more on the sedation aspect, I describe it as uncovering something buried under desperation and ignorance of other options. I still think that’s true, but today (just today, literally a few hours ago) it occurred to me there might be something else to it as well.

It’s also more convenient. When all I had were tales of mind control and people telling me it couldn’t be done, I was most attracted to the most common type of porn. Now that I know a great deal of it can be done, I’m most attracted to the safest acts.

Perhaps that’s not entirely a coincidence. Perhaps my reaction to learning my wildest dreams could come true was to stop having wildest dreams. My dreams are tamer, these days. Oh, the thought of partnered sex still scares me, but it’s nothing compared to the terror I’d feel at wanting to enact that.

I don’t like this theory. I don’t like the way it carries the implication that the way I am now is wrong. I’m happier now than I was, more hopeful now than I was, and it feels more right and true. I neither want nor want-to-want to play in the deep end of the proverbial pool: I like sticking to the shallows. Is that wrong? If my not wanting-to-want it is at all a factor, even partially and subconsciously, in my not wanting it, does that change the answer?

(I keep thinking of those people who say you haven’t lived until you’ve done psychedelics (and risked coming back wrong), that the simplistic highs of sedatives are not and should not be enough. I wish I were confident enough to tell that idea to fuck off. I wish I were not so worried that telling the idea to fuck off would be the wrong move.)

Anonymous asked: How much to spend a day lying in bed.

theunitofcaring:

Well, as a Responsible Human who definitely wears clothing, consumes food at least twice in every twenty four hours, attends all her lectures, and has never spent a solid week in bed just because, I would be highly inconvenienced by this and would demand lots of money for it.

Define “lying in bed”, though. Are you allowed toilet breaks in this scenario? Will water and Internet be supplied? If any of these are “no”, I think you’d want to find that out first and charge accordingly.
