What’s your favorite type of porn?

[Asexual Activities Open Question Weekend! | Audience Participation!]

Written word. Consenting characters. Contains no conventionally sexual content (but can contain some stuff that’s only conventionally sexual when foreplay or aftercare, like cuddling): only recognisable as porn through the right kink goggles.

(Willing to bend on the no-sex criterion, especially since with writing you can skim. These days, mostly unwilling to bend on consensuality: I have no ethical problem with the existence of non-con fiction, but it’s not my thing. I try non-written porn sometimes, but with audio and video the bandwidth is too high and it’s too hard to pause/skim/skip-back. Image stills can be okay, but not as good as text.)

What do you think about arousal?

asexualactivities:

Ace/grace/demi respondents only, please!

[Asexual Activities Open Question Weekend! | Audience Participation!]

I think it’s neat that I can still cause physical responses by thinking, even in something I don’t have direct motor control over. I think there’s always a certain comfort in doing something you expect to cause X response and having X response happen, the satisfaction of a correct prediction.

I do not think that arousal is inherently pleasant. (It generally doesn’t bother me, but I don’t enjoy it except in the more abstract ways described above.) I find it odd that other people talk about arousal as if it were pleasant in itself.

I note that fantasies and (especially) words can arouse me, but actions don’t. Doing non-verbal sexual things can be sexually satisfying, but it is not arousing. (Probably for the best, as it might get distracting.)

somnilogical:

does anyone know of a program that would give a nice gui to my .txt files like this which are basically just lists with tags?

i am making this inventory because i am moving (i am not sure where to but the landlord is predictably kicking everyone out of the drugs sex and violence house by the end of this month) and want to be able to:

(1) keep track of things when i move

(2) be able to notice patterns without laying all my clothes out

(3) be able to push symbols around and mark things that need to be updated or refactored into different containers

(4) reify useful categories like “containers” and “misc bag” which organize my thinking

(5) this is under (2) but more specifically I’d like to be able to not rely on my brains inconsistent association network/memory. why actually search my memory or my actual bag for what’s in my “misc bag” when i can pull out my phone and hit the “misc bag” tag? why query my brain for a list of “containers” when it will often leave out the object “wallet” because it is a non-central example? the first rule of human memory is you don’t store anything you actually care about in human memory.

(6) share the data structure with other people. i shared this file with ~5 people i know and they were able to help me locate inefficiencies. (i shared it with them in parallel of course, if i shared it with a group of 5 people at once, the answers would be bent and warped by human background monkey politics) i like being able to have several people look over my stuff and make arguments for what is needed and what isn’t, they are p much inoculated from the status quo bias. it is less “i live like this” and more “you… live like this?”.

ive started transcribing things to google keep which has some of this functionality but

* it doesn’t seem to have import/export to .txt and .csv files which i would like

* i have to make a new account to separate it from my network of alarms and checklists

* it would be nice to be able to type everything up on a full sized keyboard

* i don’t want google knowing about certain objects “”“in case they get hacked by someone who is actually evil”“”

suggestions for [a program that organizes the above list with a good gui and satisfies the listed criteria] or [how to streamline my possessions halp] would both be q grand

somnilogical:

@transientpetersen i… could do a cloud excel spreadsheet thing. though google keep has a better interface than this still.

i am interested in the things you find indispensable but are not on my list! (as consistent with point (6)!) i might be missing things that i expect to increase my subjective well being.

transientpetersen:

Don’t know if they’ll improve your well being but I’ll mention a few items I own that surprised me to see you don’t.

No basic maintenance tools. Expected at least an adjustable wrench, a screwdriver, and maybe a flashlight (in case of power loss if for no other reason).

No mention of transport options or maintenance, only a Clipper card. Bike and chain lube make my list and I would prune a lot of other things before I considered letting them go. (Your hiking shoes get my +1.)

Food prep or transport didn’t seem to make the list. No containers or coolers or lunch box. I only see a ramen maker. No knife (either cooking or multipurpose). No mug/bowl/comfortable serving option.

Nothing too sentimental. I have one or two items that remind me where I’ve been, help me focus on where I’m going. Nothing you made yourself (as far as I can tell).

Hair ties so you’re used to dealing with length but only hair ties, nothing else to secure your hair. I need a head band at least to do anything active, bandanna will do in a pinch.

Jealous that your vision is better than mine. :)

No library card? That’s just wrong.

I hate and fear the cloud and so cling to my small external hard drive.

You have a document holder so I will assume that you are keeping a similar set of financial and medical records in hardcopy as I am.

somnilogical:

>basic tools, flashlight

i haven’t needed basic tools yet. might be good to get a swiss army knife

my [external battery, large] doubles as a flashlight! though in practice i have only used it once and other times have just used my phone

>bike, chain lube

i want a bike pretty badly tbh

>food container, knife, bowl

i had a bento box, i had knives, i had a bowl; i didn’t really use them. i eat ramen using utensils and bowls i find around the house. ill get a bowl and utensils in the future.

>sentimental things, things i make myself

yes! i am trying to upload everything to the computer. i used to have stacks of notebooks ~1 meter tall that i carried with me everywhere. i left these behind along with lots of other creations. (i do have photos of a few of them uploaded to tumblr.) i am trying to burn away sentimentality, it’s a spiritual project

i want to not say “everything i love can be uploaded to a computer or die” but im also feeling this a bit rn

>headband, bandanas

i used to have these, bandana for cleaning things and stuff. they weren’t essential but they were fun

>vision

yep! i have better vision than the majority humanity, 19/20. although this may no longer be accurate as i ruined a bit of my short-range vision by staring at the full moon through a telescope for ~3 hours when i was 12

>library card

i have a library card! i didn’t inventory my wallet, because i was tired at the end. this is the only significant thing i knowingly didn’t inventory

business cards (x16) (backpack) (wallet)
mental health card from uni (backpack) (wallet)
aclu know your rights! mini pamphlet (backpack) (wallet)
starbucks gift card (x3) (backpack) (wallet) (one of these was a gift from @lethriloth)
cvs prescription card (backpack) (wallet) (my sister’s)
insurance cards (x4) (backpack) (wallet)
BART tickets (x5) (backpack) (wallet)
1$ bills (x2) (backpack) (wallet)
bus tickets for [redacted] (x4) (backpack) (wallet)
disabled bus pass for [redacted] (backpack) (wallet)
my uni id (backpack) (wallet)
someone else’s uni id (backpack) (wallet)
laundry card for old apartment (backpack) (wallet)
clipper card, defunct (backpack) (wallet)
storage facility access card (backpack) (wallet)
sf library printing card (backpack) (wallet)
sf library card (backpack) (wallet)
visa prepaid card (backpack) (wallet)

>external hard drive

i think i left this at my parents’ i need to pick this up. i p much keep everything on my laptop+the cloud

>document holder

yeah that’s why i do it! come to think of it, [document holder] and [passport+birth certificate binder] could be merged

thanks! this was v helpful

(I tried to double-check the relevant parts of your inventory (or absences) before remarking on them, but I might not have succeeded.)

No water bottle? (I use a one-quart Rubbermaid bottle.)

(Plus a water bottle holder with a shoulder strap, for easier carrying. If you’re using a backpack, though, that might not be necessary.)

Do you keep a dream journal (other than the occasional Tumblr post)? I know you said you’re trying to computerise everything, but personally I find that keyboards and (especially) backlights put me in the wrong frame of mind for dream journalling, so what I do is write it out by hand and later transcribe it into a digital backup. I don’t know if you’re the same way.

Hair ties are finite? What kind of hair ties are you using? I’ve had the same scrunchie for several years, excepting the few months where it was lost. (Found it inside the couch during spring cleaning.)

I notice you have three Starbucks gift cards.

If you’re looking for ideas for useful things to keep around, this list might help. It’s outdated, but many things are still accurate, and often the general idea of an object holds even when the specific object has changed. (For example, instead of biscotti, I currently use a pair of granola bars: one berry and one peanut. Gives me options depending on what I feel like having and whether I’m in a nut-free environment.)

What about non-ingestable medical stuff? Band-Aids, alcohol wipes, wound ointment? (also mentioned in the list linked above)

Another thing from my list that I want to draw particular attention to: a sub-container dedicated to handheld-computer and its accessories. (have since upgraded from MP3 player to smartphone, but basic idea remains the same) You’ve got SD converters and USB converters in different areas, whereas mine are next to each other. (Keeping the phone in the accessory pouch also prevents “I forgot to bring my charger” issues, though I understand some people like to keep their phone in their pocket. Probably harder to get at the phone from a backpack than from a belly bag, too.)

justice-turtle:

so has anybody got podcast recs? i’m up to date on kuec (twice), x-plain the x-men is on a three month hiatus, hidden almanac is… short. ^_^

the problem is, of course, i get hypersensitive about any little hint of -ism or – really anything at all upsetting, in my podcasts? cos i don’t have auditory filtering, so it’s like… the point of podcasts for me is to feel like i’m chilling with friends and listening to them chatter while i do whatever i’m doing.

so frex – podcasts i’ve tried that haven’t worked for me. “the thrilling adventure hour”, i think i mentioned that i just didn’t really click with the particular form of humor, but also i think scripted podcasts just don’t work as well for me as ones where it’s friends kidding around with the potential to go totally off the rails.

“journey into misery”, a dude explaining comics continuity to his girlfriend, WAY less mansplainy than that sounds – the podcast was her idea. loved it except that lbr comics are ALL FUCKSHITE and i can’t handle sentences like “they gang-raped plastic man’s wife and she died” no matter how much the podcasters agree that it was fuckery.

(note for some other post: despite never having been sexually assaulted, i get full-on triggered by sexual assault stuff? idek why)

“into it”, elle collins. a trans lady (i think? not 100% sure if binary or nonbinary) interviews people about various shit they’re interested in. excellent show, just a tiny bit too structured for me.

“the film reroll”, movies played as rpgs. mostly enjoyable, but in 12 episodes there’s been like… three really awkward jokes that weren’t called out? one super transphobic throwaway line – not even a line, a *phrase* – near the beginning of their epic wizard of oz four-parter, two ableist aspie/autism jokes. so i’m like “ehhhhh”, not quiiiite as comfortable as i like to be with my podcasts? :S also there’s only like 24 episodes so i’m already a good halfway through that one

“comicsverse”, too structured AND way too many people. i do best with two-person podcasts where the voices are pitched well apart, due to my auditory processing troubles. i can handle up to about four people if i don’t actually need to tell any of them apart. ;-)

*******

so. anyway. if you’ve recced me something and it’s not listed here i probably forgot to check it out. y’all know a bunch of my many and varied interests; i’d especially enjoy rpg-type podcasts, the summer specials on x-plain the x-men are some of my favorite comfort relistens, but you understand why i’m hesitant to just go guddling around in gamer nerd territory. ;P

Podcasts I listen to:

The Red Panda Adventures: I want you to like this one, because I love it and I would love to geek out with you about it, but I’m not sure you would like it. It’s scripted and has a largish cast*, so there’s those issues. (AFAIK, there are no public transcripts for you to check if you heard something right**.) It is reassuringly liberal, toning down 1930′s-era bigotry about as much as it can get away with, but “as much as it can get away with” isn’t “everything”. And one of the conventions of the particular superhero sub-genre they’re working in (which they explicitly embrace) is that the heroes never dwell on their own moral ambiguity. I mean, it’s good that they’re avoiding gritty grimdark stuff, but that does mean the occasional moment of being horrified by what the protagonists are doing while knowing it will never come back to bite them.

Talk the Talk: Linguistics podcast out of Australia. I’m still way back in the archives on this one. I think it’s only partially scripted: it definitely doesn’t feel all that scripted. Two hosts, plus sometimes a guest. They occasionally get a bit Discourse-y for my liking, but I think they’ve always been on the liberal side of the argument.

99% Invisible: About infrastructure and suchlike. I’m even further back in the archives on this one, only a couple dozen episodes or so in. One host, with one or two guests. Feels somewhat more scripted.

Science for the People (formerly Skeptically Speaking, but they changed it after realising their podcast hadn’t really been about skepticism for a while): Interviews on neat science things. Audio isn’t really a good format for me for this subject (I prefer to get my neat science things through text, and sometimes video), so eventually I got bored and stopped listening. (The number of trying-to-be-inclusive-and-failing episodes about sexuality was also a factor. I know my standards are too high, but it still bothers me.)

Speaking of, I also dabble in a few kink podcasts. TBH, though, I’m never even sure whether *I* like any of them, let alone whether they’re worth reccing to anyone else.

*Although, because each side actor plays several side characters, between episodes you are generally not expected to know who a side character is without context. (Within an episode you’re supposed to keep up, though.)

**Brain: “Yet!”

Me: “We have more than enough other things to do and are not taking on ~60 hours of volunteer transcription.”

Random problem for Tumblr: How does one plan a wedding? What goes into planning a wedding? How is it similar to or different from planning anything else? Are there actually people who are good at this shit?

(Feel free to answer only one or a few of these questions. I just really really want some answers from someone, even if you don’t have any good ones. Pls no bystander effect s’il vous

plaît, gracias.)

((Yes, I’m aware that I’ve already said I’m married. That was the civil ceremony; actual getting-married-ceremonially-with-guests-in-attendance is still upcoming.))

So everyone seems to basically be like “get a wedding planner”

I am a poor

If anyone would like to plan a wedding in exchange for my undying gratitude and affection, that would be super great

Otherwise, we are probably going to have as much “““planning””” as I can fake up, which is why I’m trying to figure out what I’ll need to do.

(But really please take this off my hands I will love you forever)

Re: OP, for what it’s worth, some stories I tend to hear from people talking about their weddings (or other people’s weddings):

“Our photographer didn’t show up, or showed up but didn’t focus on the areas we told him to focus on.”

“Our DJ didn’t bring the music we requested, causing a last-minute scramble in which my fiance had to run home and get tapes* out of our own music collection.”

“My mother-in-law took a party-favour bouquet without asking first. I was going to give that bouquet to my aunt-in-law!”

“Only half of the people who said they were going to show up actually did, leaving us with an unnervingly empty venue.”

[while watching a reality show:] “It is not possible for a wedding dress to be worth that much money unless it is made out of precious materials and you plan to sell it for scrap. That lady is so going to regret not buying her wedding dress from the thrift store for $40.”

And a positive one:

“It’s great that the groom’s sister in Arizona was able to listen to the ceremony [in Massachusetts] live on speakerphone. Isn’t modern** technology amazing?”

As for the second part, maybe you can barter your services?

*This was in 1991.

**This was in 2008, so it was not actually that modern, but still.

Simon De Montfort, having been defeated and killed by Royalists, his body mutilated and his extremities distributed among his enemies as trophies, faces the final indignity: T.K. Maxx. Leicester, April 2017.

This will cause an extra parallel-universe cognitive glitch for my American friends, and I am excited for that to happen here

I’m amused to see Elodie’s addition, because yes, that is exactly what happened.

(Me, upon seeing this picture: ”–wait what? What???”

Me, upon scrolling down just enough to see the original caption: “You mean that’s not even what the picture is supposed to be about?”)

But why would they even–

The company modified the name to T.K. Maxx to avoid “confusion with the established British retail chain T J Hughes (which is not affiliated with TJX)“‘

Ah, okay.

(…wait, but if it’s not called that in Britain, why is there a bit in a Jasper Fforde book that goes like this:

“You imprisoned her in a clothing store?”

“It’s not really a clothing store; that’s just the cover story. Temporal Jail, Maximum Security. Didn’t you ever wonder why it was called TJ Maxx?”)

Because the rest of that acronym was “Temporal-J Maximum Security.” I always wondered why the “J” didn’t stand for anything!

And of course it would be entirely on-theme for a Thursday Next book to have editions with slightly different text.

>>And of course it would be entirely on-theme for a Thursday Next book to have editions with slightly different text.<<

Yeah, I wondered if maybe that just wasn’t in the original, but I’m not sure how cleanly you could excise the TJ Maxx joke given that a plot conversation takes place there. Was Aornis stuck at the checkout of a different store in the original, possibly one with an impenetrably British joke? (But a reference being impenetrably obscure has never stopped Jasper Fforde before.)

Does anyone have a British copy of First Among Sequels they can check?

>>I always wondered why the “J” didn’t stand for anything!<<

I did some Googling and at first it looked like you were thinking of a bit in The Woman Who Died A Lot, which I haven’t read yet. I was thinking of First Among Sequels.

But then I went and looked at my copy of First Among Sequels, and that doesn’t specify what the J stands for, either.

I mean, I might have just filled it in from context, but it kind of looks
like we have a Berenstain situation on our hands in more ways than one.

Me, upon scrolling down just enough to see the original caption: “You mean that’s not even what the picture is supposed to be about?”)

But why would they even–

The company modified the name to T.K. Maxx to avoid “confusion with the established British retail chain T J Hughes (which is not affiliated with TJX)”‘

Ah, okay.

(…wait, but if it’s not called that in Britain, why is there a bit in a Jasper Fforde book that goes like this:

“You imprisoned her in a clothing store?”

“It’s not really a clothing store; that’s just the cover story. Temporal Jail, Maximum Security. Didn’t you ever wonder why it was called TJ Maxx?”)

compromised-by-castiel asked: Sam, you seem like a bread person, have you ever had Langos?

copperbadge:

So first of all, “you seem like a bread person” is possibly the most accurate thing said to or about me this week. :D

I have not had Langos in specific – I had to google it to see what it was – but it’s apparently very similar to Beaver Tails (also known as Frybread, Elephant Ears, or Fried Dough depending on which State Fair you’re attending). It looks like Langos is traditionally served with savory toppings, as opposed to the usually-sweet toppings you get on fried dough, but I gotta tell you fried dough with garlic or sour cream and cheese sounds frankly fucking amazing.

There’s probably a Hungarian place in Chicago that serves Langos, I’ll have to find out. Thanks for the tip!

Can confirm, lángos is fantastic. There’s a stand in one of the farmers’ markets around here that sells them.

I’m on vacation at Disneyland, ama

Are you going to buy a stuffed animal at Disneyland for your future child? My parents did that while visiting Disney during their first trying-to-conceive stage, and I always liked being able to tell people that I’d had my Winnie the Pooh teddy for [current age + 1] years.
