This cold is weirdly accelerated. The symptoms are more severe, and have rather longer periods of overlap (normally one symptom fades out as the next fades in), but overall it seems to be going by faster.
At first, this seemed like a good deal. Yeah, Day 2 in particular was pretty miserable, but on Day 3 I already felt like I’d turned the corner. It’s Day 4 now, and I feel the way I normally would around Day 6. My appetite isn’t up to par, but my body generally isn’t resisting me anymore when I try to get it to eat, and occasionally I even feel hungry. My sense of taste is still a bit distorted, but I can mostly taste things now. My normal level of executive function has more or less returned. The tiredness still feels mostly hollow, and I certainly don’t feel the way I ought to feel after getting ~4 – 5 hours of sleep the night before, but it isn’t completely hollow.
Turns out there’s an additional price I didn’t foresee, though it’s sort of mentioned in that list:
If your coughing is accelerated such that you are having 1 – 4 bouts of coughing per 2 minutes, you cannot sleep. Every time you start to even sort of settle in, another cough wakes you up. I spent three straight hours (3 – 6 AM) lying in bed, trying to find stimuli that would distract me from the urge to cough but not distract me from sleeping. (I considered taking dimenhydrinate, but given that I was already on pseudoephedrine and dextromethorphan*, I didn’t want to add another drug into the mix without having a chance to look into their interactions. Maybe tonight.)
(In the end, I don’t think anything I did worked: the coughing just sort of stopped for a while around 6 AM, enough that I was able to get another ~3 hours of sleep in.)
Given the choice of this symptom profile or the normal one, I might still go with this one, but it’s less obvious a choice than it was yesterday.
*I thought “reduces the urge to cough” meant “reduces frequency of urge to cough”, but last night’s experience was actually “reduces severity of urge to cough, such that it’s easier to ignore if you have things to take your mind off it”.

So I’ve got a cold (at least it waited until I was done with my semester and on break), and when I spoke this morning my first thought was “dear god, I sound like the Fathers”. (to hear the bit I was quoting, go to timestamp 3:07)
I coughed a bit between that first speech and recording this, clearing some stuff out, so the impersonation isn’t quite as good.
(Neat fact: my pitch here actually sounds better than my normal voice, where “better” means “more closely approximating the way my voice sounds from the inside”.)

So for a moment there I thought they’d put “undefined” on purpose, like one of those Mastercard “priceless” ads.
Then it flipped, and revealed another “undefined”.
Also, the fact that they’re reminding me to vote for American president means they’re either extremely competent (they noticed me talking about how I’m an American citizen, and recognised that this supersedes my geographical location in Canada when determining my American voting eligibility) or extremely incompetent (they didn’t notice I’m in Canada). I know which one I’m guessing.
I’m not even considering putting a voting-registration button on my Tumblr until they have demonstrated to my satisfaction that it will not completely fuck up my blog in a cascade of horrific bugs.
P.S. Also, the “Learn More” button just opens another tab of my dashboard, exactly the same as the original tab. No “learn more” information on it.

I was wondering today, how come I’ve never seen mind-control fetishists talking about BBC Merlin? And only seen one piece of erotic fanfiction set in that universe?
That show had such ridiculous quantities of mind control. When it wasn’t plain mind-control magic, it was zombification (in both the “resurrection” and “enthrallment” senses simultaneously, though–at least in the case I’m thinking of–not in the “non-sapient” sense). Or love spells. Or possession. Or mind-altering parasites. Or getting their wills broken the mundane way, with torture.
One time, in series 4 IIRC, there was a five-episode streak in which somebody got mind-controlled in every episode. Not a five-episode arc involving mind control: five individual plots. It was almost half the season.
(I started laughing at episode 4 of the streak, when they said the Lamia could control men’s minds. Mom asked what was funny, and I had to take a moment to try to see it from the outside, how suspicious it would seem that I was the first one to notice despite not really paying that much attention. *I* knew it was because my salience mechanisms were attuned differently than hers, but would she be able to work that out? I don’t want my mom knowing my kinks.
After a moment, I decided I could pass it off as coincidence that I just happened to be paying attention at the right times, and told her about the streak. When the “next time on” showed the abovementioned zombification, she was laughing too.)
Was I just in the wrong places at the wrong times? Is that why I never saw anyone discussing this?

Favourite Film Of 2015: Not all that into movies. Especially not into watching in theatres, which are too loud and don’t let you pause and have sunk costs (since you pay by the movie, that places pressure on you not to leave partway through if it’s boring).
I will say The Force Awakens, on the grounds that it is a movie that I have watched and that I know to be from 2015. I watched it for cultural literacy reasons and do not really have an opinion on how good it was (”favourite” or otherwise), but it is definitely a film from 2015 (or so IMDB tells me, anyway).

Last Thing I Bought Online: I bought a 64GB microSD card and a 4-pack of Aero chocolate bars from Amazon. Well, I say “I” bought them: my brother wanted them, but I had a lot of Amazon credit lying around and he didn’t, so I bought them and he paid me back. (He could have paid for them himself, but no sense leaving that money tied up in Amazon when it could be in my bank account*. I can always pay Amazon with bank money if I find something I want later.)
(Because the microSD card was just under the free shipping cut-off, it was actually cheaper to buy the chocolate bars than to not buy them, which is why he got them.)
*Well, in general. In that specific case, the money my brother gave me never saw my bank account: I used it to pay my exam invigilator.

Any Recurring Dreams: Not by the strict definition: nothing identical or nearly-identical, no continuing storylines. As for recurring themes, I get a relatively large number of amnesia nightmares. (Occasionally they even go meta, with lucid nightmares where the horror comes from knowing your long-term memory compiler is turned off while you’re asleep.)
Phobias Or Fears: Food poisoning, death (and partial death, as above)
How Would My Friends Describe Me: Has an interesting perspective on things. (Interesting in the genuine and positive sense, not the “…interesting” one might use to describe something one doesn’t want to admit was dull or disturbing.)
How Would My Enemies Describe Me: Whatever their favourite euphemism is for “insubordinate”. A lot of negative descriptors for use on people boil down to “insubordinate”.
(I try to keep my insubordination to a minimum, but sometimes I slip up or misjudge exactly which hierarchy is in play.)
Would I Take A Bullet For Someone: Probably not. I guess if the bullet would be fatal to them and non-fatal to me, but that’s probably not what the question meant.
If I Had Money To Spare What Would I Buy First: (I assume this is after taking care of the usual windfall stuff, paying off household debts and charity and whatnot)
Maybe a car? Our minivan has terrible gas mileage, and we only make use of the superior storage space (for items or passengers) ~4 times/year. I’d keep the minivan around for those 4 times and buy a more efficient car for everyday use. (Mom’s afraid a non-minivan won’t have enough legroom, but surely there must be some car out there with both legroom and decent fuel efficiency.)

I am so not ready, but on the other hand it’s nice to see a demonstration that it’s still possible for a Boolean to change hands every once in a while.
It’s been a year and a half since the last sale. If the next is a year and a half from now, I might very well be a contender for it by then.

This maple leaf pin (picture of moose quarter for scale) was given to me by the Canadian government as a citizenship gift.
This was my third Canada Day as a citizen, and my ninth as a resident. I had a pretty quiet day today: I didn’t go to any parties, I didn’t watch the fireworks (they’re too loud, and I’m not much into pretty things). But I ate strawberry shortcake for dessert (family tradition; it’s red and white, you see), and I wore my pin, and I remembered my oath.
