Seeing more and more blogs without a [username].tumblr.com site which means you can only view their blogs in tumblr.com/[username] mode, and I realized just the other day that nowadays you have to manually go to your blog settings and toggle the “enable custom theme” switch to have a browser site activated.

I REALLY recommend activating this! Especially if you’re an artist or if you have a themed blog, like if you reblog fanart for a specific fandom or ship. First and foremostly you can change the whole theme if you want to, you can really just go wild with building your personal aesthetic for your page.

But what I think is even more important, is that you NEED to “enable custom theme” to enable access to your archive! The link [username].tumblr.com/archive doesn’t work if you don’t have this enabled!

If you post art or archive fanart or fandom content of any kind, letting people access your archive makes it so much easier for people (and yourself) to find older art on your blog or to look for something you drew a while ago that they remember loving and want to look at again.

We talk lots about how on Tumblr old art gets to circulate, and the archive is part of how that works. It’s a really useful tool in finding good content that isn’t brand new. And especially if you are good at tagging, it’s very easy to filter the archive to find ship content or meta or fics, whatever you want to find.

Checked on this and you have to activate it on web view – the option isn’t there in the mobile app. I didn’t have it activated, so even if you’ve been here since well before Dashcon, might want to check on that.

It looks like they’ve fixed the inability to view “/archive”, but I recommend having a browser site anyway.

I hope that once everyone’s done laughing at the important blue checkmarks (no rush, it’s fucking hilarious), Tumblr considers other icons we can put by our names. Like little hats or something we can send to friends for a day for a dollar. Little animal companions. Good job stickers.

You-tried stars, maybe

Hi! We’re introducing Important Blue Internet Checkmarks here on Tumblr. They’re a steal at $7.99—that’s cheaper than some other places, when you consider that you get not one but TWO checkmarks for your blog on web only (for now). Why, you ask? Why not? Nothing matters! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Get yours here!

Tumblr now has “community labels”. When I see a description of them that only describes how they behave on the dash, not on the username.tumblr.com view, it allegedly makes me want to engage in cartoonish and unrealistic violence, such as hitting staff with a giant mallet, which I will for this purpose choose to tag with the “violence” label!

This post is in fact viewable at moral-autism.tumblr.com, even in private browsing mode.

Tumblr Blaze is very good because tumblr correctly deduced that if they ran a real advertising service using targeted demographics we’d have burnt this site to the ground, but ALSO correctly deduced that we would be overjoyed to collectively pay large amounts of money to spread shitposts onto completely random dashes in a delighted flurry of slightly malicious mischief. You really do gotta hand it to em on this one, A+ problem solving.

Incredible content brought to MY DASH with OTHER PEOPLE’S money? Yeah, I’ll support that

I do not know what this is about at all but that is arnold

Fucking,,,

imagine

If tumblr had a revenue source that wasn’t primarily ad based and they could start allowing wild shit again

Man if this was the offer I’d definitely pay $5/mo

Staff saw this post and agreed so hard they got it implemented in 1 day.

Oh! This is great. I have signed up for this. I’d much rather tumblr make money from me directly than from the Weird Ad Industry. And I straightforwardly want to pay them for the storage and engineering costs of hosting my blog and the precious social ecosystem it lives in.

YOU CAN turn off “based on your likes”; it’s in preferences > dashboard.

I also turned ON “timestamps on everything,” which is awesome

@heroofthreefaces

Thanks. That’s where I looked, and failed, to find it yesterday.

I just looked again. It’s there now! They unloaded the update on me before they unloaded the toggle for it. Thanks!

I’m still leaving Tumblr Labs off, though, I think

The toggle wasn’t in my settings when I looked yesterday, either, but it is now, and I’ve switched it off with considerable determination.

Still no toggle for the “Hey Look At This Random Post!” thingie, though.

(FWIW, I’ve had Tumblr Labs switched off the whole time, so I don’t think that’s a factor.)

Changes to Tagged and Search URLs on Tumblr

Heads up! We’re changing the way we parse URLs on tagged and search pages, to properly encode/decode them to support spaces, hyphens, plus signs, and underscores. Most of these changes will be invisible to you, but if you’ve kept bookmarks or links to tagged and search pages on Tumblr or your blog, read on!

We’re going to start this process by rolling out a new setting you can enable when customizing your blog on the web:

969693ff2adc28acba72fc81a1c8ad96026065ac

What does it do? Today, and with that toggle disabled, going to a blog’s tagged URL like https://staff.tumblr.com/tagged/tumblr-tuesday would turn “tumblr-tuesday” into “tumblr tuesday” and you’d see posts with that tag. Same with search URLs. If you have that toggle enabled, that https://staff.tumblr.com/tagged/tumblr-tuesday URL will be decoded as “tumblr-tuesday” instead. If you want to link to the “tumblr tuesday” tag on your blog, you’ll have to use “tumblr%20tuesday” in the URL. But this means that if you use certain special characters in your tags, you’ll now properly be able to link to them!

The toggle above gives you early access to figure this all out. On December 1st, 2021, we’ll be enabling this behavior for all blogs on Tumblr.

We’ll update all of the links when you click on tags in Tumblr. However, if you manually added links to your tags in your blog description, theme, somewhere off Tumblr, saved bookmarks, or in posts (like a pinned post on your blog), then you’ll need to update those links if they contain spaces, underscores, or hyphens. Spaces in tags will now be encoded as “%20” rather than “-” or “+”. To do this, turn that toggle on, and click around on your tags to see if any of the URLs changed. Having this setting enabled and updating any links you’ve saved somewhere will future-proof you for when we roll this change out site-wide.

502bf463eb76bed45351e4c578357eaa93178ea0

We hope this is great news for anyone who uses tags in specific ways (we see you!) and has been frustrated that the way to link to them has been inconsistent, or just plain not working since… forever. We’re working on several fixes across Tumblr related to these inconsistencies, but the majority of them require no action on your part.

Please hit us up via Support if you have any questions or concerns about this!
