paradigm-adrift:

In the last 3 years I got tinnitus, feeling like I’m suffocating, and joint pain added to my moment-to-moment suffering. That’s 1 constant burden added per year. Let alone the several other minor things breaking during that time that I notice daily but not constantly.

At this rate I’ll have about 50 problems as bad as tinnitus weighing on me at any given moment by the end of my expected life span. Actually, rumor has it that new problems accelerate as you get older rather than showing up at a constant rate, so if the last 3 years aren’t a fluke, 50 could be too optimistic.

But that can’t possibly be true, right? Yeah, aging is bad, but if it were that bad people would get almost-universally institutionalized indefinitely in their 40s as the constant torture accumulates, probably, and that clearly isn’t the case. It’s gotta be better than what my gut instinct suggests the future will be like, right?

Right?

I used to wonder about this myself (right down to the annual frequency), and from my experience thus far it seems like at least part of the answer is: not all long-lasting problems are permanent. They sometimes mysteriously *disappear* just as they mysteriously appeared.

I’m not prone to earwax clogs anymore (as I was for roughly a decade). I don’t get waves of stomach pain every night around 12:50 AM anymore (several years). I usually don’t have an itching response to my own sweat anymore (~two years). I tried stopping my use of dandruff shampoo recently to see if the dandruff would come back, and so far it *hasn’t*.

(This isn’t even counting the late-onset dysmenorrhea, the chronic constipation, or the once-frequent rashes on the backs of my hands, for all of which the underlying tendency is still there but very well-controlled.)

I’m not *planning around* the possibility that, say, my ability to breathe unfiltered outdoor non-winter air will someday return, but I acknowledge that it might and I’ll gladly accept the bonus to my expected quality-of-life if it does.

an atheist ghost. they refuse to move on to the afterlife on the grounds that the afterlife does not and should not exist

they only respond to ouija board summonings in order to lecture people for participating in non-evidence-based belief systems

exorcisms dont work cause they dont believe in them.

“yeah sure I could ‘go into the light’ as you so eloquently put it, but let’s be analytical about this. worst-case scenario, the afterlife is real and I get cast into some version of Hell for being a nonbeliever. slightly better-case scenario, it’s a reincarnation-based afterlife, which means I end up having to do the whole Existence thing all over again, which frankly seems like a huge roll of the dice. enormously risky, given the low quality of life many people experience, and that’s setting aside philosophical issues of identity, e.g. without the memories and experiences that shaped me, would I even still technically exist as a version of myself I could identify? reincarnation aside, let’s bear in mind there’s no actual evidence there’s even a so-called ‘afterlife’ waiting on the other side–for all we know, my consciousness will just dissolve into nonexistence. again, huge roll of the dice. and even in the best-case scenario? wherein I somehow pass an Arbitrary Morality Test I didn’t sign up for and get accepted into some sort of magical Heaven or whatever? well. consider it from my point of view. all of a sudden I’d be a member of a strange and unfamiliar society, subject to a completely new set of rules and regulations that I probably don’t get a say in. Is ‘Heaven’ a democracy? will I still have access to free will? will I have meaningful choices regarding lifestyle and occupation? what do the holy books say about that, huh? I could be forced to spend a literal eternity worshiping a deity who has made some extremely questionable and problematic decisions regarding the universe. I’m not signing up for that! how is that any better than my current situation? listen buddy, I spent 80 years living in a capitalist hellhole before death Itself finally freed me from all the obligations and restrictions of modern existence. I don’t work, I don’t pay rent or taxes, I just wander from place to place keeping my own schedule, doing my own thing, beholden to neither laws nor peer pressure. as purgatories go, that’s a pretty sweet deal! and what guarantee do I have that any damned afterlife is going to be more tolerable than my current not-existence, huh? none! none whatsoever. skeptic? damn right I’m skeptic! not to mention this whole Heaven-and-Hell dichotomy seems extremely manipulative if not outright abusive, as moral systems go. that’s no way to parent a species! nope. just, nope. this whole religious afterlife nonsense sounds like a whole lot of unnecessary stress and risk. I’m perfectly comfortable staying right where I am, thanks ever so, so you can tell your exorcist to write that out in latin and shove it up his ass”

look man, life is hard and the rules of society are complex

but let people off the fuckin train before you try to get on

and don’t play your goddamn music on your phone speakers in public

Genuinely curious: Why is music treated so much worse than conversation? If the norm was to actually be quiet on the bus, that would be one thing, but I see people primarily single out “music” without even mentioning loud conversations and such.

(I’m guilty of this too – I would never dream of playing music out loud, but get me excited and I will lose all awareness of how loud I’m talking)

Because music *is* worse than conversation. More distracting (consumes more mental processing power), and with potentially much deeper valleys of unpleasantness.

I can only assume that mileage must vary on this, though, given that store background radios are not just legal but *encouraged*.

(Even my *dentist* has a background radio. I was afraid to point out the risk of [them getting distracted by the music at a crucial moment and fucking up a procedure] for fear of self-fulfilling-prophecies/centipede’s-dilemmas. Possibly I should have at least pointed out that playing lowest-common-denominator pop music while performing potentially invasive medical procedures on people risks giving them PTSD *with extremely common triggers*: that issue seems incredibly obvious to *me*, but then I have relevant experience and perhaps it’s not obvious otherwise.)

Have a good day at work little buddy

EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS IMMEDIATELY.

His name is Black and was adopted by the workers of a construction site in Antofagasta, Chile. He was found by some workers near the area, when he was just a kitten, and they decided to take care care of him.  The workers loved him and one of the cleaning ladies of the site designed some mini reflective jackets- and other outfits- for him.  He was officialy named foreman  and had its own access credential to the construction site.
I belive the constrution work finished on 2017 and he was adopted by one of the employees.

Look at him!

He is such a good site foreman!

He’s working so hard and doing such a good job! <3

I looked up ‘CATPATAZ DE INGRESO’ (on the cat’s ID card) and Google Translate corrected my spelling.

‘Capataz’ = ‘foreman’.

Catpataz’ = a terrible, terrible pun.
