SHADOW VENUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUE

I’m trying not to screech out loud here bc my aunt’s asleep but GOD IM SO EXCITE :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

My first reaction was fear–

“The Mire is now a level 24 venue (changed from 23-24).”

–but then I checked Culex’s thread and only the 115 STR Mire build is nerfed by this: the 117 is unaffected. I’ll have to tincture the secondary Mire trainer I reserve for renting out to people, but otherwise it’s fine.

(This was especially worrying because a while back I saw somebody making a Newbie’s Guide to the Coliseum, and one of their tips was to use Chrome, and yesterday I figured I’d give it a shot and oh my god it’s so much faster than Firefox sweet glory hallelujah. I’ve tried three times so far, and all trials have been as lag-free as Firefox at its best (and Firefox coli is rarely at its best). Don’t know what difference would cause it, and I’m not entirely convinced that I didn’t just happen to be extremely lucky with those three trials, but I’m hopeful. Point being (the point other than “try Chrome if you’re having any lag troubles”), the Mire suddenly became much less frustrating to me yesterday and I was worried that that lack of frustration was going to be very short-lived.)

(…you know what, I’m going to go test out Chrome on my smartphone. I’m curious to see if that makes phone-coli bearable.

…my god. Setting up the coli page, navigating the non-mobile-optimised website on that tiny screen, is slow. Once you get there, though, it’s vastly better than mobile-Firefox and about on par with PC-Firefox.)

Anyway, time to go read all the item descriptions, add the familiars to my spreadsheet, perform the traditional new-venue ritual of farming it until I get one of the new familiars, all that good stuff.

My ideal choice for a low-level superpower would be “hours of sleep work like interchangeable energy-units.”

I’m getting eight (weirdly-distributed) hours of sleep a day but I’m still tired, what is this bullshit?

Were you less tired during times when you were getting eight hours of sleep non-weirdly distributed?

1: as a general rule, the younger you are, the more sleep you need. IIRC, it’s actually pretty normal for people in their late teens to need nine hours a day.

2: individual variation. Even if eight hours were the average for your demographic, you might happen to have higher-than-average sleep needs.

(I’m not saying that the weird distribution has nothing to do with it, but these might be relevant too.)

I’ve been thinking about awe lately. I’m wondering if maybe it’s not that I can’t feel it, but that I don’t feel it in response to the standard stars and sunsets and religious rituals.

(Probably the thing that got me thinking this was telling @justice-turtle about how I can’t feel emotions that I’m under too much pressure to feel. Rituals and sunsets and fucking stars have so much baggage regarding how one ought to feel about them.)

Maybe awe is the feeling I get sometimes reading about mental experiences that are foreign to me, neither good nor bad but different. Maybe awe is in headspaces and phantom wings, the feeling like seeing the multiverse spread out before you and you’ll never leave your own little patch of it but it’s enough, it’s enough to see it and to know that there are people walking the paths you’ll never take.

Maybe awe is the feeling of reading really well-done porn for a kink that you’re completely not into. The words are filled with some foreign kind of power, power you can’t quite directly perceive but you can hear the whoosh as it flies over your head. You’ll never feel it yourself but it’s enough to know it’s there and to know that there are people who can, who can feel the power in those words and take it into themselves until their bones hum with it and their nervous system sparks.

Sometimes it’s enough, and maybe that’s what it means.

Whenever I hear about another documentary or article bitching about how social media is destroying lives, and are we all just obsessive narcissists who want to be liked, and people online aren’t *real* friends, I want to make my own documentary.

It would be full of people talking about the first time they found other people like them, people they could really talk to and who understood. There would be so many clips of online friends meeting each other in person for the firsttime at airports and conventions, with all of the tears and laughter, and immediately hugging and talking like they’ve never been apart.

Online friendship is not screaming into the void waiting for someone to ‘like’ your post. It’s staying up until 3am talking over a messenger about books and movies, and music, or comforting your friend because they’re sad, and knowing they’d do the same for you. It’s group hugs at the train station when you finally get to meet in person and feeling like you’ve been doing this forever. It’s making art for someone because you want them to smile, even f they’ll never see it.

Online friendship is friendship, not some inferior form of it. And I am so sick of people who don’t get it being snide and trying to analyse it.

iwillbeyourhands:

something i’m curious about: where are you from, and is it normal to see fireflies in the summer?

choppye:

Auckland New Zealand and HELL NO

macateallthespookings:

my mom lives in NC and during the summer the treeline behind her house lights up with so many fireflies that it looks like flickering stars in a darker part of the night sky

iwillbeyourhands:

yeah this is my experience, basically a constant lights show in the summer

timefortigers:

ive never seen a firefly in my life

wufflesvetinari:

in suburban michigan you may see a single firefly at night and it will be a Big Deal. if you go to the more wooded areas, you’ll see them flashing on and off regularly (still not that intense though)

ladyyatexel:

Everywhere in Pennsylvania. They’re actually our state insect.

jewishdragon:

California

No

thetransintransgenic:

Some places have fireflies and some places do not and the places that do not are WRONG AND BAD BECAUSE FIREFLIES ARE WONDERFUL AND AMAZING.

Raising a child in a place that does not have Sufficient Fireflies is basically ALMOST AS TERRIBLE as gendering your child, which is very terrible indeed.

(</sarcasm>. Except about the “gendering children is terrible”. And the “fireflies are awesome”. But it’s okay and not abuse if there are no fireflies, I guess. Even though fireflies are awesome.)

sinesalvatorem:

I have seen, like, one firefly (or maybe another luminous flying bug?) every few months in the couple Caribbean countries I’ve lived in. It seems to be completely unrelated to seasons there.

I miss New Jersey’s fireflies. I haven’t seen a firefly since I moved to southern Ontario.

(To be fair, I don’t go out at dusk very often here, so it’s possible there’s some around and they’re just less blatant.)

Hey! I will have you know that I am completely normal and believable! In fact, I was born normal and belie-

…Actually, no, that’s a fucking lie. Even my birth was engineered for dumb reasons.

Like, my due date was the 7th of February. However, I was late, because executive dysfunction. After I had been late for a while, the midwife started suggesting that they induce the birth.

Eventually, the 13th rolled around and she said she had Valentine’s plans with her husband, so she wouldn’t be available if my mother went into labour the next day. So my mum was like “fiiiiine” and they induced on the 13th.
