Me: oh, [mutual] is into that, I should airplane them this po-

Me: wait

Me: what the fuck am I doing

Informal porn-sharing networks are a thing of beauty, and I for one heartily endorse sending people weird stuff you know they’re into as a quality social norm (assuming you know they’re comfortable with it).

Just remember to Ctrl-C something else later.

Something to add to that list of questionable blogging-etiquette assumptions?

So, you know how the email notification when you get a new follower has some random congratulatory message, “Yay!” or “Woohoo!” or, weirdly, “Whatever!”?

A blog with a Russian-y username just followed me, and the notifying email’s congratulation was “Классно!”.

I thought it was a neat trick. I wonder what exactly it was about that blog that triggered that response.

(It was just the congratulation that was in Russian; the “is now following you” bit was still English.)

Holy moly, replies are back

Your familiar friend for talking about posts is rolling out over the next few days, and it’s learned a ton since it’s been away. Now replies let you:

  • Reply multiple times to a post.
  • Reply to your own posts.
  • See all of a post’s replies in one place.
  • Decide who can and can’t reply to you. (It’s in your blog settings.)

All that adds up to being able to talk about a post, right inside of a post, even as it travels from Tumblr to Tumblr. So, starting with posts created today, you’ll see a new notes view to help you follow that conversation. Looook:

Updated Reply Function 1

If you’ve been waiting for this, thanks for your patience. If you’re new to replies, come discover their unique flavor. Spicier than a like, sweeter than a reblog, served on a big family-style platter. All part of a balanced diet. Have fun replying, Tumblr.

Want more details? You can get the nitty-gritty on replies and notes over in our help docs.

Replies are back in town

It’s all happening! Replies (and a nice new notes view) are rolling out even as I type this, so get ready to get back to it. Be sure to check our help docs for more on these features.

Did someone just message me? There was a “1″ on the messaging button, but I don’t see any new messages in the drop-down list of past chats.

Not me, but I’ve been having that happen at intervals too. Sometimes the message shows up later. No notes on patterns yet.

This is the first time it’s happened to me, but I’m not surprised others have been having the same issue. I’ll keep an eye on the drop-down list, and if there was someone behind it and they’re reading this, you might want to try contacting me again.

Thiiiin Miiiiintssss

(at last, you are mine again)

That’s some fucking next level tagposting right there.

DS9 Hug (Next-Level Tagposting)

Do you mean that in a good way or a bad way? (I suppose the hug gif is probably a good sign?)

(Tumblr’s tag-inspired register is good for some things–particularly when one wants to mimic the aspect voice-based conversation often has of shifting fluidly from one topic to another with no obvious places to put sentence or paragraph breaks–but I still have trouble bringing myself to write much of it in the main body of a post, so I rely a little more heavily on tags to communicate than might be ideal. As you can see, the main body of this post is really serving the function of a post title rather than an actual body.)

Oh, that sucks that your account was deleted.  Did you ever back up any of your posts?  (Which reminds me, I should back up my tumblr again.)

I have a few backups, the latest of which goes up to nov 20 of last year. So not *great*, but it’s something.

And if more people back up their blogs, more of my later posts that they reblogged will be preserved!

What backup method do you use? I’m currently settling for this thing and I want to know if you have any better ideas.

(Pros of linked thing: have already successfully figured out how to back up my own blog with it; uses only public information, so theoretically there’s no reason why one can’t use it on blogs other than one’s own. Cons: archives are not searchable by any method obvious enough for me to have thought of it; in practice three of the four non-me blogs I tried it on (theunitofcaring, justice-turtle, sinesalvatorem) failed after the first page for no apparent reason. (mythologymondays succeeded.))

I use https://github.com/bbolli/tumblr-utils/ (via the hack-y method of editing the python source to point it to the blogs I want, since I can’t be arsed to run things from command line).

The backups it generates are not searchable by any obvious method afaict, but they are pretty easily navigable (in the form of nicely formatted html pages, including an index and pages by month). And you can back up other people’s blogs — in fact, one of the ones that I preserved recently was @theunitofcaring’s, which went off without a hitch. Occasionally some images fail to download for no evident reason, but very rarely. Overall I recommend.

(if @theunitofcaring or anyone else feels strongly that they don’t want their blog backed up I will send all my personal records of it down the memory hole, but I defaulted to “yes” on the theory that public blogs can be assumed to be public, etc)

Thank you! This does look good. (Well, the archives are relatively big (mine is 1.4GB), but that’s a price worth paying for the pictures.)

I’m Officially In The Bay!

Well, I’ve been in the Bay for 15 hours, but I didn’t have wifi for most of that time. However, I now have wifi so I can now tell you that I made it!

When I arrived at the airport there were a bunch of people waiting there to meet me. Unfortunately, I have forgotten most of their Tumblr urls in the meantime. I remember @theunitofcaring, @endecision, @ozymandias271, @michaelblume, @luminousalicorn, and @chroniclesofrettik were there. I also remember a bunch of other people by face/voice.

We played a dice farming game, because Kelsey had a bag of 150 dice on her, because Kelsey. Alicorn was the most successful dice tycoon, while most of my dice died of malaria. We then located our cars, while singing the Hamilton soundtrack, and migrated to a sushi restaurant.

Alas, the sushi restaurant was out of sushi. This is apparently a thing that happens. We moved from there to another restaurant where we discussed the morality of Sith lords, the moral relevance of orcs, unprincipled exceptions in politics, and how exciting it was to have acquired an Alison.

Then everyone drifted off to their homes. Kelsey and I went back to her dorm room and cuddled a lot. It was during the cuddles that it really hit me that I had made it. It stopped feeling like a dream. I was safe. I was home.

I slept well last night.

*cheering, also aww-ing*

(By the way, I think you need to update your Tumblr timezone setting. My brain’s timezone-translation subroutine is throwing an exception: Error: Feb 3, 2016 3:21 pm PST has not occurred.)

Tumblr has timezone settings?

I assumed it just took the d&t from the computer where the post was made.

Also, :D :D :D :D we have successfully acquired an alison

Hmm, yeah, I’m not seeing a button for it. Might be her computer’s timezone that needs updating, then.

Makes sense, which puts the actual timing of her post…63 minutes ago, I believe.

Wait, did you calculate that from her old timezone rather than just looking?

…right, Tumblr’s interface has crappy documentation and it’s easy not to notice that if you hover over the top-right corner (the link to the permalink page) of a post on your dashboard, it tells you the time (your local time) it was posted.

*hovers over OP’s corner* “2:21pm”

*hovers over your post’s corner* “3:24pm”
