20/04/20 • title is the subject line of an email about middle egyptian classes. italics are ‘quotes from my middle egyptian prof that i happened to write down’

#…apparently this post was *not* made in October #it was posted in June and that date implies it was written in April #which means that truck of emotional resonance that hits you at #“it is october‚ and i wait for the symptoms of spring/it is april‚ but only when i close my eyes” #is not *intended* to be there #or at least *that* particular truck isn’t #but fuck it they sing it back to you for 85000 reasons (via @brin-bellway)

yeah so possibly this unintentionally contains a timeloop thing. you’re right that it was written in april but it also grew out of various sentences from my diary-ish notebooks. the line about october/april was written in october 2019 and was vaguely about seasonal depression / winter Sucks and april is when you can See trees starting to grow leaves again. then when i was putting the poem together in april obviously that resonated in…… a very different way. so i was like yeah ok sure. and now it’s october again and it has a whole new but not unrelated meaning!! poetry timeloop

#so yeah intent doesn’t really…… matter and usually i don’y reblog things onto this blog

#but this time it’s kinda interesting bcs i Did actually intend it Kind Of this way but then also the intent got Out Of Control!!!

I wrote a post [link] about time standing still during the plague, so it makes sense that that was the first meaning that hit me. I can see *multiple* COVID-related interpretations, though: one could also interpret it, not as waiting for the spring of 2020 that never came, but as waiting for the metaphorical blooming of a post-plague world (which *could* potentially happen during a literal springtime too).

The second interpretation that occurred to me was a Northerner moving to the Southern Hemisphere, the experience of the local Octobers carrying what they still think of as a certain essential April-ness.

Also I just took the exam for my penultimate semester and late next month I start my final semester, so…obviously it depends on how much 2020 Bullshit I have to deal with in the next few months, there could well be delays, but the single most likely month for “what month am I going to officially receive my diploma” is April 2021. Next spring will likely be a metaphorical spring for me personally, the blooming of the next stage of my life, entering my career.

Plus there’s that seasonal-depression interpretation, which I did not think of on my own but yeah I can see that.

Layers!!

Quick poll:

What numerical range can legitimately be described by the word “several”?

@squareallworthy yes, in my usage.

squareallworthy:

5 to somewhere in the high teens.

invertedporcupine:

You are an outlier.  Consensus is 3-6, with some people including 2 or 7 (but not both).

I’m 3-7.

eightyonekilograms:

Related poll: what time period is covered by “the other day”? (If you wouldn’t mind, please add your approximate or exact age as well; I have a working hypothesis that “the other day” spans greater stretches of time as one gets older)

invertedporcupine:

42.  At least two days ago, but not long enough ago that I could say “last week”.

counter-example:

several = 4-9

the other day = within the last year-ish but sometimes longer

invertedporcupine:

Good lord, that is almost as bad as how Mrs. Porcupine uses “it’s been a minute”.

eightyonekilograms:

Heh, my dad and I would drive you crazy.

My dad uses “the other day” to mean basically any point in the past. He has used it to refer to events more than 8 years ago. It used to drive me up the wall when I was young, but now I find myself doing exactly the same thing.

Hypothesis falsified; I guess my dad is just weird and it rubbed off on me.

Several = definitely 4 – 8, maybe 9 or 10

The other day = if I knew how long ago it was I probably wouldn’t be calling it that; likely not more than a couple weeks or so though, after that it defaults back to “a while ago” which could be any temporal distance

Age = 26

behold the EXTREMELY GAY TREE

okay but why is there a Christmas section in early October

is this like Costco where they keep the Christmas-tree aisle up year-round?

Nope, Walmart and Lowe’s have both just put up their Christmas sections already this year. I guess Time broke enough that Halloween has stopped holding the line. :-(

Hang on to your hats, folks, we’re going straight from March to December with *maybe* a short pit stop in August.

(A while back I called this year “strangled in its cradle” [link], and it occurred to me later that it was a particularly evocative/fitting metaphor under the circumstances. 2020: the year deprived of its breath.)

An Actual Real Person my Dad knew. Pretty sure he worked as a bush guide. When someone asked the time he’d pull off his hat – some kind of broad brim – and use to take a few measurements of the sun’s position relative to the horizon. Then he’d declare the time.

He was accurate to the minute.

Well, I’ve been in the Bay for 15 hours, but I didn’t have wifi for most of that time. However, I now have wifi so I can now tell you that I made it!

When I arrived at the airport there were a bunch of people waiting there to meet me. Unfortunately, I have forgotten most of their Tumblr urls in the meantime. I remember @theunitofcaring, @endecision, @ozymandias271, @michaelblume, @luminousalicorn, and @chroniclesofrettik were there. I also remember a bunch of other people by face/voice.

We played a dice farming game, because Kelsey had a bag of 150 dice on her, because Kelsey. Alicorn was the most successful dice tycoon, while most of my dice died of malaria. We then located our cars, while singing the Hamilton soundtrack, and migrated to a sushi restaurant.

Alas, the sushi restaurant was out of sushi. This is apparently a thing that happens. We moved from there to another restaurant where we discussed the morality of Sith lords, the moral relevance of orcs, unprincipled exceptions in politics, and how exciting it was to have acquired an Alison.

Then everyone drifted off to their homes. Kelsey and I went back to her dorm room and cuddled a lot. It was during the cuddles that it really hit me that I had made it. It stopped feeling like a dream. I was safe. I was home.

I slept well last night.

*cheering, also aww-ing*

(By the way, I think you need to update your Tumblr timezone setting. My brain’s timezone-translation subroutine is throwing an exception: Error: Feb 3, 2016 3:21 pm PST has not occurred.)

Tumblr has timezone settings?

I assumed it just took the d&t from the computer where the post was made.

Also, :D :D :D :D we have successfully acquired an alison

Hmm, yeah, I’m not seeing a button for it. Might be her computer’s timezone that needs updating, then.

Makes sense, which puts the actual timing of her post…63 minutes ago, I believe.

Wait, did you calculate that from her old timezone rather than just looking?

…right, Tumblr’s interface has crappy documentation and it’s easy not to notice that if you hover over the top-right corner (the link to the permalink page) of a post on your dashboard, it tells you the time (your local time) it was posted.

*hovers over OP’s corner* “2:21pm”

*hovers over your post’s corner* “3:24pm”

Let’s be frank,

we’re all creepy strangers on the internet that don’t know shit about each other.

Reblog with your birthday so your followers know when to send you some nice birthday themed hate mail!

“#which is technically today since it’s past midnight here #though I haven’t been to bed yet so for me it’s still yesterday”

Ah yes, the Tumblr Timezone. ^_^

When I was a kid, I referred to this as “[Surname] Time”, because of my family’s habit at the time of staying up until 2 or 3 in the morning. It generally only came up when I was writing diary entries after midnight. (When I experimented with all-nighters around age nine, I considered the new day to begin at dawn, and wrote the dates on my diary entries accordingly.)

That being said, when it’s turning someone’s birthday we do traditionally sing “Happy Birthday” to them at midnight.
