I think we need some new traditions for New Years’, now that we’re all online and watching midnight slowly roll across our friends from one side of the world to the other in a big wave. The countdown is all well and good, of course. I’ll never turn down an excuse for a kiss! But something new and supplemental, to help bind together far-flung families and friends.

Daylight savings gives us that saturnalia-type party where you can do whatever you want in the hour that’s about to be overwritten. Is there something useful we could borrow from that? Some ritual that only makes sense while the world is mid-stride between one year and the next, some kind of magic that can leak in through the gap between them.

As we now know, Tumblr is $30 million dollars in debt. Oops. Tumblr has announced some major (and unpopular) changes to the site in their attempt to get back above water. The alternative is that Tumblr ceases to exist. But maybe we can change that…

How:

There are 327 million unique tumblr visits per month, and almost 500 million active accounts. If 10 million unique users (or less, if we bought more than one) bought or gifted Crabs from the Tumblr store, we could knock out Tumblr’s debt easily. Buy crabs!

When:

July 29, 2023 is Crab Day, running through August 5 (for anyone who can’t log on that day) as Crab Week!

Who:

Everyone!! If you truly can’t afford to participate with a $3 crab, (or other item from the shop) post crab memes!

Time for Tumblr users to rise again and surprise everyone…

I’ve been thinking, with a lot of sadness, what I need to make fandom a large part of my life again (I want to, but at this point don’t think I can). One answer is LJ/DW kinkmemes. People don’t seem to do that much these days, and in any case then and now it can only exist for big fandoms. Centrally Marvel/DC universes, which I don’t enjoy.

I miss browsing prompts, posting prompts, writing a fill for a prompt knowing that at least one person was going to be an enthusiastic reader… I thrived in that environment. Writing alone feels really sterile. I want to be an ecosystem again.

This seems like a long shot. But:

If you know of an active kinkmeme (it’s okay if it’s small, as long as it’s alive), for a fandom you think I’ll like – please let me know. Here are some of my preferences:

  • Ideally, there are a lot of writers who are good. Some fandoms are unusually and confusingly full of good writers, like The Terror. Others are relatively sparse.
  • I like dark fic where people are sad and have sex that’s at least slightly unhealthy. I’m not an obligate dead dove writer, but a fandom where such fic would break norms is not for me.
  • I prefer to read and write about characters who are at least mildly intellectual, or can be interpreted as such.

The 2023 Gender Census is now open!

The 10th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 9th May 2023.

It’s short and easy, about 5 minutes probably.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful – it’s what helped us get 40,000 responses last year.

I work at Vox’s Future Perfect, a grant-funded effective-altruism-inspired vertical focused on high impact writing on some of the world’s most important problems.

Some of the stories I’m proudest of over the last few years has covered the case for catastrophic AI risk, the rise of plant-based meat, progress towards malaria vaccines, and the case for better biosafety and pandemic preparedness (unfortunately, those pieces all look really good in retrospect). 

Now, we’re expanding Future Perfect! We’ll be hiring three full-time fellows for a one-year fellowship. Starting salary depends on your experience but Vox’s minimum salary for any role is $56,000. You’ll write for Future Perfect on any of the above topics or other topics of global importance that you want to become an expert in and bring to our audience. You don’t need to have a journalism background; I think the most important qualification is a commitment to understanding and improving the world, with the EA lens that makes Future Perfect different from everything else in journalism.

Chapters 1 (pt 1 + 2; pt 3) and 2 (pt 1 + 2 + 3; pt 4 + 5) are uploaded and ready for feedback. The remaining chapters and epilogue will be posted over the next couple weeks, with Chapter 5 and the epilogue being uploaded no later than April 13th.

I would like to get at least twenty people to beta read this novella. If you’re interested in reading an urban supernatural/paranormal suspense novella about a university student, the child ghost who haunts her home, and the trouble their friendship causes, then please sign up!
