Aotearoa/New Zealand, 1280.

The maritime plan of most of human civilization during our period went as follows:

  1. Get boats.
  2. Put weapons on boats.
  3. Conquer neighboring countries either by military force or by overwhelming trade dominance.
  4. Instagram shots of you in front of London/Indrapura/Mogadishu.
  5. Go home.

The Polynesians, on the other hand, appeared to have a different plan:

  1. Build canoes.
  2. Sail out into the open ocean for four thousand miles.
  3. ???
  4. Sweet, Hawai’i!

As the world looked on in tolerant, baffled wonder for thousands of years [sidebar on Vikings], Polynesians repeated steps 1-4, especially step 3, which when you peeled off the little sticker with the question marks turned out to be “employ an array of sophisticated navigational techniques which remain in cultural transmission and even active use today. Also, when you reach an island, use an equally sophisticated array of terraforming techniques to make an unfamiliar landscape ecologically viable for human life. Also, eat a balanced diet, because scurvy is for white people.”

The Polynesians did their eastern Pacific exploration around our period, and may have settled Easter Island and Hawai’i around then, too, if not a little earlier. Polynesian colonies were set up on little stubs of volcanic rock, hideously isolated archipelagos, even sub-polar islands. They probably hung out with medieval Peruvians, or at least, they made enough American contact to get ahold of sweet potatoes. [Sidebar on sweet potatoes.] And they found New Zealand, and settled in, and those who stuck around became the Māori.

And then hundreds of years later the islands of the Polynesian triangle were conquered by Europeans and the Europeans did their damndest to put that little ??? sticker back on the four-part plan, because, you know, people without shirts could not possibly be world explorers. But we do not have to listen to them. When I said those navigational techniques are still in use today, I mean literally, today, because in August of this year a group of Maori sailors took off from New Zealand for Rapa Nui, the last leg of the Polynesian triangle that no one’s completed in the modern era, and according to their website they should be landing, in, like, twelve hours, if they haven’t already.

???

oh my goddddd WHAT

I mean, not the navigational techniques and awesome canoes, I knew about those, I mean THIS AUGUST WHAT RIGHT NOW WHAT how come nobody TOLD ME?????

Stupid mainstream media: get your heads out of your asses. Now. I WANTED TO HEAR ABOUT THIS DAILY THANKYOUVERY.

Now there’s a good point. Why haven’t we heard about this? It seems like exactly the sort of thing Daily Planet would cover, yet I don’t think they’ve mentioned it. (Maybe somebody with a Twitter should ask @dailyplanetshow if they’re getting on this.)

(Also, the most recent news update on that page (December 1st, because time zones) says the current ETA is sometime next week.)

I want to see how people measure up to the Kinsey scale, it’s a rating for sexuality.

justice-turtle:

F.

I’d be more surprised if the test had managed to categorize me, given that I can’t even categorize me. *g* Transgender man bordering on genderfluid, mostly asexual (demisexual or gray-ace), romantically/sometimes-sexually into men to the point that when I need a single word I identify as gay, but enough into women romantically that I can’t swear that’ll never overlap with the demisexuality, even though my experiences with sexual attraction have always been with men.

X.

(I’m so ace, I bought an asexuality ring even though I didn’t know about them at the time and can never be bothered to wear jewellery that doesn’t have some purpose or meaning. (Okay, so that was probably bad impulse control in the face of cheap shinies rather than some subconscious psychic link.))

It didn’t complain of contradiction when I answered “true” to both “I can’t decide which I find more attractive” and “I find women more attractive than men”. (I can’t even decide whether I can’t decide.) Why those are even both there, I don’t know.

Why is it relevant whether I’m submissive? I was tempted for a moment to go through all the permutations to see if there’s any combination where the answer changes depending on submissiveness, but then I realised there’s 2^13 combinations (if I figured right) and that’s way too much work for a whim. (It did not change with the combination I had.)

Hi guys, My name is Kyle. I am 18 and a transgender male.

We only have 1 MONTH (till december 19, 2012) to get 25,000 signatures on the petition I just created for the white house to review. It is basically asking them to provide coverage for transgender surgeries and hormonal treatment. Here is a link to the exact petition:

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/provide-financial-coverage-sex-reassignment-surgeries-transgender-americans/SXvgvYhv

Come on guys, I have seen the dumbest posts on here get a million notes. All we need is 25,000. So REBLOG REBLOG. And tell you friends and such. It takes 2 seconds and can really make a difference in someones life. Being transgender is both a medical and emotional condition that DESERVES coverage. The cost of these things make goals for some seem almost unreachable.

radicalhat:

PLEASE
THIS WOULD MEAN SO MUCH TO ME

h33h33h33:

only 321 signatures, but 900+ notes?

radicalhat:

what the fuck tumblr

ok

ok

you do all your social justice shit

but when it matters

YOU DONT SIGN IT?

fy0ra:

THIS HAS ALARMINGLY LOW SIGNATURES OH MY FUCKING GOD PLEASE SIGN THIS?????? PLEASE

radicalhat:

im going to keep reblogging this because

you know what?

this is VERY VERY VERY important to me

anshinwrites:

no seriously though

WHY DOES THIS LITERALLY HAVE 1000 MORE NOTES THAN SIGNATURES

WHAT THE FUCK ARE ALL OF YOU ASSHOLES DOING

SIGNAL BOOSTING IS GREAT BUT GO SIGN THE FUCKING PETITION

Because the non-Americans were scared off by the state and ZIP fields on the sign-up page? I know up until now I hadn’t noticed those fields are not required, and nothing in the Terms of Participation says you have to live in America.

So, they do (indirectly) ask if you’re American, but they don’t complain if you refuse to answer. No need to let a bit of geography stop you. Go, click.

internetkatze:

I’m listening to this MIT lecture about visual perception while doing my inking try-out, and there’s this part where he shows pictures of people’s faces upside-down, but with one or two facial features distorted (for example, mouth and eyes are still right-side-up while the rest of the face is upside down) and saying things like, “you can’t tell there’s anything wrong with these faces until I flip them, because your brain is not used to seeing people upside down.”

But I immediately recognized what was wrong with them before he even mentioned anything! I was like, that mouth looks weird D: and then he flipped it and I was like HA I WAS RIGHT

but what really makes this interesting is that I’m faceblind and I can’t recognize people’s faces normally. But I can tell when the features are wrong upside down. ….what does that say about me!? Should I sign up for research or something……?

That’s actually pretty cool, and now that you mention it, I’ve always picked that out immediately as well.

Anyone else with prosopagnosia run into this?

For what it’s worth, the first time I saw one of those pictures I didn’t notice the flipped mouth until the face was turned right-side-up. (I think now that I know these pictures are out there and might be encountered I’d be much more likely to realise what it is.)

Ah well. Maybe a cross-country road trip someday? I’ll tell you about my immigration experience if you want, though I was 8-13 yrs (took ages for the US to let us out). 5 years this month and I still prah-cess my proh-duce, not the other way around.

For sure! I will collect all the tumblr people. I’m sure someone will know how to drive. Ahahaha. I always wanted to do a proper road trip anyway.

I would love to hear about your experience, if you’re willing, for real. That’d be freaking awesome info. But aww the US didn’t want to let you out? Ass holes.

ahahaha

I dunno I’m being silly now. Here have a smily face. :)

Some tips, tricks, and observations, in roughly chronological order:

Why do fingerprint records expire if you still have the same fingers?

Relatedly, why do they even have time to expire? Is it really that hard for whatever Americans are in charge of these things to tell whatever Canadians are in charge of these things that as far as they know we’re not criminals?

If you must be diagnosed with breast cancer (or any other cancer), be sure it doesn’t happen until the day after your official health exam to check if you’re too much of a burden or something. If it wasn’t known* at the time of the exam, they are not allowed to take it into account. (Yeah, we got in on a technicality. Well, Mom got in on a technicality, but we wouldn’t have gone without her. (Don’t worry, she’s been fine for six years, and they declare you Officially Cured after five.) Besides, by the time we got here her treatment was mostly over, so it wasn’t even particularly burdensome.)

*But it was strongly suspected.

You’re supposed to show up at ServiceOntario (or local equivalent) to get your health card within three months of moving, not after. If you show up after 92 days thinking it’s about as early as possible, they will give you a health card, but it will require significantly more awkwardness and line-waiting while they figure out what to do with you.

Cheez-Its in Canada are rarely stumbled across, and when they say “Limited Time Only” on the box they mean it. Live near enough to the border for occasional shopping trips (we go roughly four times a year, 2.5 hours to Buffalo each way) or prepare to go without.

This is probably not at all relevant to you, but if you’re a minor when you apply for citizenship (even if you’re, oh, 17 years and 10 months *whistles innocently*) you don’t take the knowledge test. (Which means I don’t really know much about it, as it’s Not My Problem.)

Our permanent resident cards expire next month, and we haven’t finished the citizenship process (or prah-cess) yet. I’m not sure how we fix that. Should probably ask.

You’d better hope there are ways of renewing your American passport that involve closer places to Manitoba than Toronto, or you’ve got a hell of a ways to go. (On the other hand, once you’ve gone that far Waterloo Region isn’t that much further. We have apple fritters! (Well, I actually like the Kitchener Market’s apple fritter shop better. The fritters taste about the same, but they also sell lángos, which is even more delicious.)) In Toronto at least, you can only start the renewing-your-passport between the hours of…I think it was 8 AM and 10:30 AM (I know 10:30 was the latest), which sucks for our schedule and probably yours as well. (We’ve made the appointment, but it hasn’t happened yet.)

I don’t think they’d assume the viewer is going to be a: up on Whovian news and b: faceblind.

But I am, and so for me it follows a pretty standard plot twist progression.

First, Hmm, she looks a bit like Jenna-Louise Coleman.

Shortly after, Have I heard Jenna-Louise’s voice? Did it sound like this? I think it might have.

Shortly after that, She talks so fast. Didn’t they say that was one of the things they really noticed about her? How she talked so fast he could hardly keep up with her?

At the end of the episode, watching the credits:

Oswin

Jenna-Louise Coleman

Ha! Now what does this mean for the future plot?

YOU ARE ACTUALLY ME.

I had to go google her and study what her hair line looked like so that I could figure out if it was her or not in the episode.

Was that after failing to find it on IMDB? Because I’d planned to go ask IMDB for Oswin’s actress after the episode, my standard plan with such suspicions (but then I saw the name in the credits, so I didn’t have to), but looking for the page to link I see they don’t have a full cast list yet.

More people pronounce .gif with a hard G sound?  That just seems odd to me but I suppose different thought processes are different /tautology/

The official answer is “JIF”. Sorry giffers.

No. I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Why am I reblogging this when I totally pronounce it gif, not jif.

– Leon

I agree with the OP. (And can’t believe the opposing post has over four times the notes. Really?)

PS, after reading the link: if they wanted PNG to have an unambiguous pronunciation, they should a: have found an excuse to put an “i” in there, and b: not made it reminiscent of “OMG”. Because according to my brain, the obvious pronunciation is “poh-nye-gahd”.
