Bohemian Rhapsody is no one’s favorite song, but also everyone’s favorite song. Like, when someone asks what your favorite song is you never say Bohemian Rhapsody but when it starts playing on the radio I am pretty sure you crank it up and belt out every single lyric and you don’t even care you’re so proud.
I’ve, uh. Never heard Bohemian Rhapsody.
(That’s a Queen song, right? The one everybody quotes almost as much as The Princess Bride, that starts with “I see a little silhouetto of a man, scaramouche, scaramouche, will you do the fandango”?)
…possibly I should remedy that at some point. Forget Steve Rogers, I need a remedial course in 20th-century pop music. ;S
I’ve listened to a lot of those “60s-70s-80s” radio stations over the years*, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard “Bohemian Rhapsody” on the radio. The first time I heard the song was at seventeen when we were sharing music at Girl Guide camp, and once more on Youtube since then. I don’t know most of the words and it almost never comes up that I don’t know most of the words. (I am aware of its reputation, but almost all the quoting I’ve encountered takes place on the Internet, where people don’t notice you not joining in.)
*They’d probably make for a decent remedial course, too. After a while you start to notice which songs tend to come up. Soon you too can make “Don’t Stop Believing” jokes when a train goes by the tracks within earshot of your house every night at midnight.

How many digits of π do you know?

…I was under the impression that “3.14159265” was the amount you couldn’t help but learn just by living in a culture where the concept of pi is this well-known. Certainly while I remember learning “358” and a little later “9793238” (circa age ten or eleven; I was reading Muse magazine and they had a bit on pi, and I was like “oh hey, more pi digits! that ‘979323’ is a nice pattern, I bet it would be easy to memorise. think I’ll throw in one more while I’m at it”), I don’t remembering learning the first…do you count from before or after the decimal point? Anyway, I don’t remember learning the part in my first sentence because I was so young.
(I suppose it’s not that surprising, really. I frequently have trouble telling the difference between common knowledge and stuff I happened to pick up on the way.)

but me and my sister both live in yorkshire (I live in North and she lives in South) and she has to talk slowly when she comes to the north because no-one can understand a word she says, so there’s deviations of accents within accents.
Oh, and then there’s:
Spread out all over the fucking place but more prevalent in the South: RP (which is what Murricans think of as a “British Accent” even though it’s a minority of the English that have it let alone the British)
plus like…there’s a LOT of variation in the Lothian area? Edinburgh’s super posh.

I’ve lived in the UK for more than half my life, certainly my entire adult life, and I still can’t successfully ID all the accents there are here. I’m sometimes mortifyingly wrong, but less so now.
There’s way more than two Welsh accents. How can you categorize it as ‘Welsh’ or ‘Cardiff’? The accent in Caernarfon is completely different to the accent in Wrexham, so that’s at least four. Then the accent of Ceredigion is different again. Five. The Welsh hill farming accent is different to the Welsh mining accent (North/South divide.) People in Penmaenmawr sound different to people in Llanfairfechan and there’s a 7 minute drive between them.
This! Even if you’re grouping similar Welsh accents together, there’s at LEAST one in the North and one in the South. Cool map though!

Yes, I say “British accent”. Thing is, it’s not that I don’t know there are a zillion different accents in Britain. It’s that I don’t know what they’re called, and so am forced to use “British accent” as an umbrella term because I don’t have the words to describe them more specifically except perhaps by comparison (“it was a Dave-Lister-y sort of voice*”).
*And even having heard that this is a Liverpool accent, I would still describe it by comparison if I could possibly get away with it. I don’t entirely trust my source on where Lister’s accent is from, nor do I trust Liverpool to have only one accent.

it’s okay — maybe you did comment but tumblr lost it? that happens sometimes too. I have seen this on my dash a couple times recently, so i just wanted all my followers to know that this is a thing that doesnt work.
Well, the last time I saw a post like this going around it worked for some people and not others. Both times I’ve been one of the people it didn’t work for.
(I never did try it with Windows. Last time I logged into my Google account under Windows, Google freaked out afterward, saying my account had been compromised and forcing me to change my password right that moment. Considering the antivirus on my Windows system isn’t actually very good (I mostly just use it for video games), I figured it was probably best not to type any more passwords into it.)

*whispers*: It genuinely surprises me that no one stayed behind, especially since some of the Maquis crew probably were colonists in their pre-terrorist revolutionary lives. But I think this is the same part of me that always wants like two or three people to peace out whenever someone gives that speech about “This is entirely voluntary, none of you will be punished for not going on this suicide mission, y’all could just go back to your quarters and have a beer and forget this whole thing or you could come with me and probably die.”
I have this same qualm! And I’m *almost* sure there was at least one B5 scene where people did leave?

I was thinking along the same lines at first, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense. The Maquis weren’t fighting for the right to make settlements in general, but specifically for the right to stay in the homes they’d built, yes? Which they would be giving up forever by staying, after putting all this effort and risk into keeping their homes.
A lot of those “totally voluntary” missions draw their pool of volunteers entirely from people who are only there because they signed up for “people unwilling to make heroic sacrifices need not apply” jobs (like Starfleet, particularly the more militarised bits), and make a lot more sense when you bear that in mind. (Yes, I wouldn’t go, but I would also not join anything military-ish in the first place. I rather like living, thanks.)
(Sometimes you do get groups of people who have not already expressed a willingness to do this sort of thing, and they still all agree to it. Those annoy me.)

This is wrong.
You can’t use complementary colours. They need to be blendable so you can show Canada as a blend. (Maybe other places too, but I haven’t been to any of them so I don’t know.) My thermostat reads in Fahrenheit by default. My oven doesn’t even have a Celsius option. (If you watch Canadian cooking shows and read Canadian cookbooks and food package instructions, you’ll see that Celsius being an afterthought or ignored entirely is the norm when discussing cooking. Occasionally you see Celsius get front-and-centre and Fahrenheit get the parenthetical, but not usually.)
You can get away with not knowing French, but you need to be Celsius/Fahrenheit bilingual.
