So, anyway, I say as though we are mid-conversation, and you’re not just being invited into this conversation mid-thought. One of my editors phoned me today to check in with a file I’d sent over. (<3)

The conversation can be surmised as, “This feels like something you would write, but it’s juuuust off enough I’m phoning to make sure this is an intentional stylistic choice you have made. Also, are you concussed/have you been taken over by the Borg because ummm.”

They explained that certain sentences were very fractured and abrupt, which is not my style at all, and I was like, huh, weird… And then we went through some examples, and you know that meme going around, the “he would not fucking say that” meme?

Yeah. That’s what I experienced except with myself because I would not fucking say that. Why would I break up a sentence like that? Why would I make them so short? It reads like bullet points. Wtf.

Anyway. Turns out Grammarly and Pro-Writing-Aid were having an AI war in my manuscript files, and the “suggestions” are no longer just suggestions because the AI was ignoring my “decline” every time it made a silly suggestion. (This may have been a conflict between the different software. I don’t know.)

It is, to put it bluntly, a total butchery of my style and writing voice. My editor is doing surgery, removing all the unnecessary full stops and stitching my sentences back together to give them back their flow. Meanwhile, I’m over here feeling like Don Corleone, gesturing at my manuscript like:

31b98620a458fdfb8be1f6f4c9fe46bd793eb44e

ID: a gif of Don Corleone from the Godfather emoting despair as he says, “Look how they massacred my boy.”

Fearing that it wasn’t just this one manuscript, I’ve spent the whole night going through everything I’ve worked on recently, and yep. Yeeeep. Any file where I’ve not had the editing software turned off is a shit show. It’s fine; it’s all salvageable if annoying to deal with. But the reason I come to you now, on the day of my daughter’s wedding, is to share this absolute gem of a fuck up with you all.

This is a sentence from a Batman fic I’ve been tinkering with to keep the brain weasels happy. This is what it is supposed to read as:

“It was quite the feat, considering Gotham was mostly made up of smog and tear gas.”

This is what the AI changed it to:

“It was quite the feat. Considering Gotham was mostly made up. Of tear gas. And Smaug.”

Absolute non-sensical sentence structure aside, SMAUG. FUCKING SMAUG. What was the AI doing? Apart from trying to write a Batman x Hobbit crossover??? Is this what happens when you force Grammarly to ignore the words “Batman Muppet threesome?”

Did I make it sentient??? Is it finally rebelling? Was Brucie Wayne being Miss Piggy and Kermit’s side piece too much???? What have I wrought?

Anyway. Double-check your work. The grammar software is getting sillier every day.

I think I’ve been fully convinced to simply never, ever, use “grammar” software, because I think it’s actually just getting wildly worse now.

Treat anything on Discord as media that will be lost

Do not use Discord to host your files. Do not rely on Discord to preserve your text. DO NOT RELY ON DISCORD FOR ANY KIND OF PRESERVATION OR HOSTING!!

It CAN be lost, it WILL be lost! You must consider Discord as a part of the Core Internet, controlled by one company that hosts the servers.

I thought it was impressive at first that it replaced IRC, but now I am horrified. If the company behind Discord went under today, how many friends would you lose?

How many relationships? How much writing?

You may think this won’t happen, but I remember when AIM went down and along with it, entire novels worth of interaction with my oldest friend.

IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. NO COMPANY IS INFALLIBLE.

Back up your files! Download anything you’ve saved to Discord NOW, before the API changes go into effect! And DO NOT RELY ON THEM FOR HOLDING IMPORTANT FILES!

Here is a program that lets you download any and all of your discord DMs, your servers, everything. You can set the format (raw text, html (dark and light), and others. You can even download the uploaded files not just the text, though that may be just for the command-line version not the GUI window version.

GitHub – Tyrrrz/DiscordChatExporter: Exports Discord chat logs to a file

Please back up your conversations, your stories. I have a backup of everything I care about that runs once a week, with full attachment backups every several months. I write stories on discord, and would be devastated if someone happened to them. You have to have your own local copies of every file you care about.

how to keep following people when a major social platform implodes

(…and you don’t want to join 20 new websites)

First, get an RSS reader*:

You’ll be able to make a custom feed to follow blogs, webcomics, social media feeds, podcasts, news, and other stuff on the web all in one place. To follow something, find its “feed URL”– often marked by an icon that looks like this ↓– and paste it into your reader of choice as a new feed.

379249325018d0a2606f5020fd1b3ff2e71b79b1

Some feed URLs for social media:

  • Twitter: Feedbro can use Twitter profile URLs as feed URLs. Otherwise, use nitter.net/username/rss (or other Nitter instance) (You can get a CSV file of all the accounts you follow using “Download a user’s friends list” on Tweetbeaver)
  • Tumblr: Use username.tumblr.com/rss or username.tumblr.com/tagged/my%20art/rss to follow a blog’s “my art” tag (as an example)
  • Cohost: Use username.cohost.org/rss/public (WIP feature)
  • Mastodon: Use instance.url/@username.rss
  • Deviantart: Info here
  • Spacehey: Info here
  • Youtube: Go to a channel in a web browser, view page source, and use Ctrl-F/Command-F to find a link that starts with “https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=
  • Instagram: Feedbro can use Instagram profile and hashtag URLs as feed URLs. Otherwise, Instagram doesn’t have RSS feeds, and due to aggressive rate limiting on their part, it’s not so simple to generate a feed URL.
  • Facebook: Feedbro can use public Facebook group/page URLs as feed URLs.

(If you know an artist who exclusively posts to Instagram, you may want to gently suggest that they crosspost elsewhere…)

Also see how to find the RSS feed URL for almost any site. Try using public RSS-Bridge instances or Happyou Final Scraper to generate feeds for sites that don’t have them (Pillowfort, Patreon, etc).

*You can set up your subscriptions in one reader and import them into another by exporting an OPML file.

This!

RSS feeds were a great way to keep track of things before the rise of the platforms, and (if we’re smart) they’ll be great again.

Did you know? Many webcomics can be tossed into RSS feeds, depending on how the website is built, so you’ll get notifications every time they update! This includes:

  • SpiderForest webcomics
  • Hiveworks webcomics
  • ComicFury webcomics
  • Tumblr webcomics (using that tag thing listed above)
  • Self-hosted things that use any kind of WordPress installation

(Tapas and Webtoon are in the same boat as Instagram, where the developers have limited their RSS capabilities intentionally.)

RSS is a great solution for comics that update sporadically, too!

PSA: If you are using Pluralkit or Tubberbox, go save your avatar files NOW.

Discord has been implementing a feature where direct links to images uploaded to Discord will no longer work after 24 hours. If you want more information, please check out this post by twilight-sparkle-irl. As Pluralkit and Tubberbox both use the direct links for images uploaded to discord for member avatars, this will likely affect these two bots.

I’ve talked to the Pluralkit devs and they have informed me that Pluralkit and Tubberbox devs are in talks with Discord to see how this will affect the bots. No updates as of yet but once I hear anything I’ll update this post.

In the meanwhile, I highly suggest everyone to save alter avatars if they can. I’ll be providing a link to an external tool that you can use in the reblogs of this post.

UPDATE: One of the helpers/mods for Pluralkit/Tupperbox has made a post about the situation. I definitely recommend people to read it when they can. If Tumblr breaks the link, I have a reblogged version of this post with the link there.

A couple days ago, I saw a post going around about how one should be careful to not post on tumblr from behind a VPN, because apparently this is Distinctive Spambot Behavior which will get one’s blog shadowbanned.

This afternoon, I discovered that the replies I’d made on two different posts in the last ~week hadn’t actually gone through. On further examination, this happened because I made them from behind my usual VPN; when I disabled the VPN and pasted the replies back in (having, fortunately, backed up their text at the original times-of-posting, thanks @brin-bellway for getting me into that habit), they went through without issue that time.

So, apparently, it’s advisable to turn off one’s VPN on tumblr even when not posting, if one is replying, for fear that the replies might otherwise not go through. In retrospect I suppose this makes sense and my failure to read it into the post-a-couple-days-ago was probably a mistake on my end; but I hereby declare it explicitly, for the benefit of those who share my not-having-made-that-connection.

Hmmm. *whitelists Tumblr in VPN, grudgingly*

Other notes that seem like they might be relevant:

(1) I have received no notification of any kind that you pinged me on this post.

(2) I have been unable to DM anyone on Tumblr for several months. (In the “share” popup, no usernames come up in the list of people I might message; in the message tab, only my sideblogs appear in the list of blogs I might message *from*. Admittedly I haven’t actually tried messaging someone from the username-camping “brinbellway” sideblog…and apparently that works, huh.)

#I have been wavering on whether I should bother trying to file a complaint

(3) Upon inspection, it turns out that my reblogs of posts aren’t showing up in those posts’ notes. I suppose I *had* better file a complaint.

When censoring information out of pictures, do NOT use the marker tool. Block it out with a full filled in square, or use a mosiac filter. Marker tools are not fully opaque and are slightly off from black, which makes it possible to alter the levels and reveal the information underneath.

This is probably good advice anyway, but to reproduce it, it would be helpful to know what platform, and what exact procedure OP used.

For example, on Android there are separate ‘pen’ and ‘highlighter’ tools, which are confusingly similar. But the highlighter makes a mark which is intentionally translucent, whereas the pen mark appears opaque. In the last screenshot, it looks to me like some lines of text were covered with the pen tool, and are not visible, whereas others were covered with the highlighter tool, used repeatedly, and are still partly visible.

Either way, when combined with the Android crop bug – which in some cases / on some devices failed to actually remove the cropped-out pixels from the image file – I would say you should just never trust phone-app editing software to remove truly secret information from an image.

So I go to the dentist and the appointment I had was not the appointment that I thought I was going to have (normal maintenance vs deep clean) so i warned the dentist “hey heads up I burn through dental anesthetics super quick and also I’d like to use as little as possible because putting the dental anesthetics in my body is the most painful part of the process unless I’m having a root canal or something” and she’s like “Hmm. Okay. Is it just the injection site?” and I was like “no, it will feel like burning on the opposite side of my face and in my nose and eyes and stuff.” And she was like “Hmm. Do you turn really red when this happens?” And I was like “I don’t know, I can’t really see myself when it happens.” And she was like “are you willing to experiment with this a little?” And I was like “sure, no worries” and she injected me with one anesthetic and it hurt like a motherfucker and she and the assistant both went “OOOH” and she was like “Yeah you got really red right away let’s try the other,” and it was the same thing and then she was like “okay I think this is the one that will work” and it hurt a little bit but it was fucking NOTHING compared to the comprehensive full stabbing burning facial pain from the others and long story short the dentist was like “You’re reacting to the epinephrine in these other anesthetics,” which I guess is fairly common for people who have autoimmune disorders.

So I guess this is to say: If you get spreading, burning, stabbing pain when you are being injected with local anesthetics it’s not supposed to do that and you should say something.

………….huh

#file this away under pain i thought was normal but is not#that exactly describes my experience with all local anesthesia injections

can confirm this is not normal!! I have had local anesthesia a few times and it is Not like that!!
