Happy Sweet 16, ISS!

November 20th marked the launch anniversary of the first module of the International Space Station (ISS), Zarya. On that day in 1998 began the construction in space of this unique scientific and exploration outpost that enables researchers from all over the world to put their talents to work with innovative experiments that could not be done anywhere else.

We thank our partners from the United States, Russia, Europe and Japan for 16 years of outstanding collaboration. Here’s to many more!

The most basic mobile phone is in fact a communications devices that shames all of science fiction, all the wrist radios and handheld communicators. Captain Kirk had to //tune// his fucking communicator and it couldn’t text or take a photo that he could stick a nice Polaroid filter on. Science fiction didn’t see the mobile phone coming. It certainly didn’t see the glowing glass windows many of us carry now, where we make amazing things happen by pointing at it with our fingers like goddamn wizards.

#oh my god everything about this article is hitting me where I live     #forsake manufactured normalacy and look at how extraordinary the world is right now     #there are six people living in space and we can /print/ organs and control satilites with apps     #”Voyager 1 is more than 11 billion miles away and it’s run off 64K of computing power and an eight-track tape deck”     #the internet itself is a goddamn miracle in the making in that humanity—vast swathes of otherwise unconnected humanity—gets together     #to watch cat videos and talk about television and laugh at each other’s jokes     #if the world isn’t thrilling you YOU ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION     #god     #I’m all     #yeah  (via notbecauseofvictories)

Don’t forget the fact that two robots on another planet have Twitter accounts and people here on Earth can follow them and their discoveries. Astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield—my favorite Canadian—has a Tumblr and posted images from space so that we could see what he was seeing. We can watch videos of galaxies merging on YouTube. And we are making so many scientific discoveries that there’s actually a blog called World Science Festival that details discoveries made each WEEK.

Yes, the world is still fucked up in any number of ways, and the problems need to be fixed. But the world’s also amazing.

#yes this #proud citizen of The Future

I swear to every heaven ever imagined,
if I hear one more dead-eyed hipster
tell me that art is dead, I will personally summon Shakespeare
from the grave so he can tell them every reason
why he wishes he were born in a time where
he could have a damn Gmail account.
The day after I taught my mother
how to send pictures over Iphone she texted
me a blurry image of our cocker spaniel ten times in a row.
Don’t you dare try to tell me that that is not beautiful.
But whatever, go ahead and choose to stay in
your backwards-hoping-all-inclusive club
while the rest of us fall in love over Skype.
Send angry letters to state representatives,
as we record the years first sunrise so
we can remember what beginning feels like when
we are inches away from the trigger.
Lock yourself away in your Antoinette castle
while eat cake and tweet to the whole universe that we did.
Hashtag you’re a pretentious ass hole.
Van Gogh would have taken 20 selflies a day.
Sylvia Plath would have texted her lovers
nothing but heart eyed emojis when she ran out of words.
Andy Warhol would have had the worlds weirdest Vine account,
and we all would have checked it every morning while we
Snap Chat our coffee orders to the people
we wish were pressed against our lips instead of lattes.
This life is spilling over with 85 year olds
rewatching JFK’s assassination and
7 year olds teaching themselves guitar over Youtube videos.
Never again do I have to be afraid of forgetting
what my fathers voice sounds like.
No longer must we sneak into our families phonebook
to look up an eating disorder hotline for our best friend.
No more must I wonder what people in Australia sound like
or how grasshoppers procreate.
I will gleefully continue to take pictures of tulips
in public parks on my cellphone
and you will continue to scoff and that is okay.
But I hope, I pray, that one day you will realize how blessed
you are to be alive in a moment where you can google search
how to say I love you in 164 different languages.

Pictures of Mars : The Empty Quarter

From the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum website: “Rover tracks disappear toward the horizon like the wake of a ship across the desolate sea of sand between the craters Endurance and Victoria on the Meridiani Plains. Opportunity took the image while stuck in the sand ripple dubbed Purgatory for over a month. This panorama (only partly shown here) was named Rub Al Khali after the “Empty Quarter” in the Arabian Desert.”

AmoeBAND became a 2012 IDEA Award Finalist by innovating every possible aspect of the plaster (band aid).

The design revisions were:

Strategic cut-outs shape to fit fingers in such a way that it is easy to bend them and not disrupt the bandage.

– An intelligent dressing material allows you to regularly check wounds from the outside, without upsetting the healing process.“According to research, the when an infection of a wound is detected, the pH value is between 6.5 and 8.5. AmoeBAND’s indicator cross turns purple, alerting the user needs to change it immediately.

– Since the bandage material used exudes a leather-like feel, availability in different skin-tones helps it blend in, without overly highlighting the injury.

– The packaging has been redesigned to a matchbox style and includes Braille instructions.

Hat tip to designers Tay Pek-Khai, Hsu Hao-Ming, Tsai Cheng-Yu, Chen Kuei-Yuan, Chen Yi-Ting, Lai Jen-Hao, Ho Chia-Ying, Chen Ying-shan, Weng Yu-Ching and Chung Kuo-Ting

Santoine:

Reblogging because it shows that ‘fair skin’ isn’t the default.

Bandages will now blend in and not stick out.

This is brilliant.

UNIVERSAL BANDAIDS!
