brin-bellway asked: Yellow, but like, in a biology-field-trip way rather than a communing-with-nature way.

Yellow: Stand in the woods with me

I require absolutely zero prompting to stand in the woods. Although I probably won’t be standing still for very long, because I will see a mushroom or bug. And really, isn’t a biology field trip really just communing with nature on its own terms?

Quite the opposite, I was thinking. Communing with nature would involve opening yourself up to it to some significant extent, which some people can pull off okay but would be a bad idea in my case given that nature and my body clearly despise each other; meanwhile, a biology field trip would involve–for me, anyway–a minimum of three (3) pieces of PPE (pollen mask, two-piece mosquito-net suit).

But I am all for learning Neat Bug Facts and Neat Mushroom Facts, just so long as none of the many, many poisons out there come into contact with me.

YouTube’s been doing this thing lately where their ad algorithm tries to time automatically inserted ad breaks to fall on black frames in the video, on the theory that a pure black frame is likely to form part of a transition between scenes, and the ad is thus less likely to cut a line of dialogue in half or whatever.

Unfortunately, the algorithm cannot distinguish between black frames that form part of scene transitions and black frames inserted for other dramatic purposes, with the result that I’ve watched videos whose ad breaks are perfectly timed to match, among other things:

  • Entering a dark room
  • The trigger of a gun being pulled
  • The beat between the setup and the punchline of a visual pun
  • A PoV shot in which the viewpoint character blinks
  • The protagonist getting punched in the face

If their goal was to make the timing of automatically inserted ad breaks feel less random, well, they succeeded!

The protagonist getting punched in the face then blacking out and having a dream about raid: shadow legends is pretty funny, actually

Dude got hit so hard he saw God, and God wants him to save 15% on car insurance.

i love how podcast fandoms have a way of producing fifty million versions of the same character’s appearance and yet you know exactly which character it is every time

especially when there’s practically no canonical description of the character in question

i may not know what cecil “the voice of night vale” gershwin palmer or jonathan “the archivist” sims look like but i sure can tell them apart at a glance

This is a really interesting parallel to art of deities in classical civs (I don’t remember this lecture super well, but I’m trying!) Basically, you could tell which deity the artist was depicting not based on their features, but by their iconography: Artemis would be depicted with a bow, or dogs, or deer, so that you could tell it was her. I’m pretty sure the same concept is in action here! Different characters are depicted with different color palettes and motifs (such as eyes and tape recorders) so that you can tell who it is.

I just think that’s really cool.

Yeah, this. Like I’m not even very far into tma but I still know that it’s
