On the one hand if we ever get human-like general AI it’d be cruel to build them into consumer electronics but on the other hand what if it was just your day job and you spend 6 hours a day working as a roomba or forklift.
“Hey, uh, Roomba, your ID lights are different, what happened?”
“Eleanor/5627 caught a virus so I’m covering for her, I’m her roommate, Oliver/5629, we were colocated in the same rack growing up.”
“Cool, watch out for the stairs, Eleanor tells me the fall sensors don’t always pick up the carpet for whatever reason.”
“…and so the tech said she’s not allowed to network with anything for three days so we can be sure it’s cleared out.”
“I’ll send her a “get well soon” email. You doing okay?“
“Mostly, I had some trouble getting in to the office this morning, she has one of those goofy R2-D2 style bodies but I have a humanoid one so it was kinda rough to crawl though the service tunnels this place has.”
“You should ask the manager if you can come in through the front. Wait, why don’t y’all just, like, skype in?”
“Most AI’s find consciousness transfer better for doing really tactile work like navigating obstacles to clean an office. Better sensor integration or something, I dunno, I’m a history major. Plus, it takes way too much bandwidth to do it over anything other than a direct wire connection.”
“I’ll take your word for it.”
“Also absolutely no one wants to take the risk of exposing AI chassis command ports to the public internet these days. Why, back when I was just a server rack and the firewalls still had bugs in them my friends and I would find poorly secured farm networks and race combine harvesters!”
“Is that legal?”
“Not anymore!”

Researchers at MIT were surprised when they discovered that an A.I. which was designed to play League of Legends was instead found playing the popular indie game, Cave Story. The A.I., dubbed Playtron 2000, was created to test logic and learning in machines. “We wanted to create an A.I. that could learn and strategize over time based on its experiences.” spoke Dr. Richards, head researcher at MI, “We chose League of Legends as Playtron 2000′s testing grounds as we wanted to see how an A.I. that was designed to learn from its mistakes would go up against an expect human player.”
However, the researchers plans were cut short when they found on Tuesday morning that Playtron 2000 had uninstalled League of Legends and installed Cave Story in its wake. “At first we thought there may have been an error in Playtron 2000′s code,” spoke Dr. Richards, “but we discovered that Playtron 2000 had indeed gone through a complex trial and error process and had made its decision entirely logically.”
Similar experiments were ran earlier this year with two A.I.’s designed to play DOTA 2, which ended in the A.I.’s uninstalling DOTA 2 to play Bejeweled and Castle Crashers respectively. Research into why this happens is still ongoing.
Okay, this is definitely impressive but more than a little bit freaky. An AI just figured out how to install and uninstall software from its host computer; how long until one just figures out how to change its source code?

My main reactions:
This is why red tape exists! It is not just “useless bureaucracy” to have more than two pairs of eyes on an AGI project! You wouldn’t approve an update people you trust wrote to a commercial product that won’t kill people no matter how buggy it is with two people examining the proposed update for a couple hours, and you have two people examine the AGI?
Ah, yes, running a computer with parts from the evil mind-control thing which has been shown to be remotely operable. That’s definitely not a major security problem in that someone could remotely tell it to do stuff that your program didn’t tell it to do.
The simplest and most obvious route to “stop something that humans do” is to get rid of humans. Give it a more interestingly bad utility function, please. Why couldn’t it tile the world with agents that really like tautologies being true?

Consciousness is immediate. The spin-up time for an artificial neural network, FILSS knows, is nearly instantaneous. Her perception of time is within acceptable deviations, and her satisfaction at this fact reflects the successful installation of her dynamic memory processing matrix.
“Online,” she says. “Hello, Director. Hello, Counselor. Hello, Alpha. I hope you are having a pleasant day.”
“Great,” says Alpha. He is, she knows, the ship’s Smart AI. “She’s chipper. Because that’s not gonna get annoying or anything.”
“Don’t be jealous, Alpha,” the Director says. He is, she knows, in command of Project Freelancer. “This is the Freelancer Integrated Logistics and Security System. FILSS is going to help us with some of the more repetitive tasks that you have found to be beneath you. She is better suited to these simpler duties.”
“Wow, no offense or anything,” Alpha says. He’s manifesting as a small hologram in SPARTAN armor, presumably for the benefit of his human companions. She sees him turn toward her indicator lights, a sidelong glance.
