Chris Hadfield and students from coast-to-coast fill the sky with music

For his last downlink before returning to Earth, CSA Astronaut Chris Hadfield performed I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing) with hundreds of students at the Ontario Science Centre and nearly a million people, mostly students from coast-to-coast Canada and around the world, performing the song in unison from their location.

I.S.S. is a song co-written by Hadfield and the Barenaked Ladies’ front man Ed Robertson.

It does? It definitely says that there are some people who have very detailed mind’s eyes and some who lack them entirely (and a lot in-between), which is only almost the same thing. (I certainly can visualise and often do, but if asked if I think primarily in pictures or words I would probably say words, and visualisation is the first thing to go under the least amount of stress*.)

*Defined for this purpose as “deviation from routine events”. (While they are often enjoyable deviations and routine events can be stressful (in a way that doesn’t cause this), “stress” still seems like the most appropriate word.)

I have no idea what this means for the story other than that the opening credits are probably going to be very arty and involve zombie horses somehow.

Continuing with the camp theme.. I really want this to be the song the heroine sings to her girlfriend while they’re running from zombies, as a sort of encouragement/we can get through this thing. (Yes, I have randomly decided this is a musical. With lesbians. Shut up.)

4. Never Gonna Happen – Lily Allen

The song the girlfriend sings to the heroine after she gets bitten to convince the heroine to shoot her. It’s about not really loving the person you just fucked; the girlfriend wants to make the heroine hate her so that the heroine doesn’t feel sad. 

5. Whatever Happened to Saturday Night by The Rocky Horror Picture Show (25th Anniversary Cast)

In which the survivors throw a WILD PARTY to celebrate still being alive despite the apocalypse… and outside the zombies gather.

6. Dumb, by Nirvana

Okay look at the lyrics for this song it actually works really well as a love song between the heroine and her NEW GIRLFRIEND, where the heroine is trying to reject the new girlfriend and the new girlfriend is Not Taking It. “I’m not like them” “but I can pretend” “The sun is gone” “but I have a light” “the day is done” “But I’m having fun” “I think I’m dumb” “Maybe just happy” “I think I’m happy”

and then they kiss

7. Should I Stay or Should I Go, the Clash

… Okay this is a brilliant final stand song JUST SAYING

8. A Letter to Elise, the Cure

We’ve survived it all and it’s time for ROMANTIC ANGST about how both the heroine and New Girlfriend are way too broken to sustain a relationship. New girlfriend = Elise, of course.

…again, this is really obviously applicable to discovering a bite mark. “Just… please don’t forget about me once I die.”

The title would suggest a dying delirium or that the former minds of zombies are trapped within dream-worlds while their bodies go about their brain-eating business. The lyrics…just don’t fit.

From the zombies’ point of view?

Also from the zombies’ point of view (sort of like this), and a nicely twisted interpretation that I will probably think of whenever I hear the song from now on.

(Phil Collins’s solo work only comprises about 11% of my shuffle playlist. One of them should be Genesis instead, and there should have been more from the bunch of artists for whom I don’t have most of the discography, not just “Tainted Love” and “Ice Dragons”.)

Into the Abyss: Incredible Shrinking Cups

Marine biologists and ocean scientists are somewhat of a tribe unto themselves. They spend weeks and months in cramped conditions aboard research vessels, doing science that’s a bit unlike any other science, and drinking enough to make Jack Sparrow proud. So it’s perfectly natural that their tribe would have some unique customs.

I discovered one of those today: Sending styrofoam cups to the bottom of the ocean as souvenirs. 

When exploring deep ocean trenches and thermal vents, it’s usually a robot or a high-tech manned submersible doing the dirty work. The Cayman trough (where the top cup went) is home to some of the world’s deepest hydrothermal vents. At around 5,000 meters deep, the cup experiences nearly 500 times the pressure we experience at sea level. And since styrofoam is a foam made of air pockets inside a hydrocarbon polymer, it compresses under the added weight!

The bottom cup began as a normal-sized drinking utensil. But after it went to the bottom of the Mariana Trench (the world’s deepest point), it returned the size of a ketchup packet. The pressure down there is about a thousand times higher than at the surface!

It reminds me of a song …
