Gandhi has been historically the most aggressive character in Civilization due to an original bug in the first game that caused him to go all-out once he reaches democracy. They just kept the thing going ever since.

To further explain this bug, because I was chatting with mothmonarch about Civilization and other strategy games last night and I never got around to explaining this fully, but I love this story:

Gandhi’s AI in the original game had its aggression set to the absolute minimum (0 on a scale of 0 to 10, I believe, I may have this wrong but the basic idea I’m about to explain is accurate, as far as I can tell). Adopting democracy lowers an AI civ’s aggression by 2 points, so when someone who is fully peaceful loses two points of aggression, they should still be nice and polite, right?

Except this is an old DOS game, and so computer math is in place. What actually happened was that Gandhi’s aggression level ticked backwards two steps, from 0 to 255. On a scale of 0 to 10, Gandhi is now 255 points of pure nuclear rage.

And that’s the story as I recall it, but again I may have gotten some details wrong, so feel free to correct me! After that, as the original poster said, the devs loved the bug so much that they just kept it in as a running joke!

“On a scale of 0 to 10, Gandhi is now 255 points of pure nuclear rage.”

I about pissed myself laughing at this.

That’s amazing.

Conversation to happen in Amazing Spider-Man 2

stuckinabucket:

Aunt May: Peter, your spider-manning needs to stop interfering with your schoolwork. You’re brilliant. You need to go to college, and you need to land scholarships to go to college, and you need to get your grades up to land scholarships.

Peter Parker: Uh…psht…spider…man…spider-whatting? I’m totally not, uh, Spider-Man.

Aunt May: Peter H. Parker, I’m kind of old, not blind. You can’t come home with a gunshot wound to the leg the same night Spider-Man gets shot, and then be fine two days later, and expect me to not put two and two together.

Peter Parker: I, uh, there’s an explanation for this that doesn’t involve me being Spider-Man!

Aunt May: Is there also an explanation for the giant mutant lizard you got into a fight with just happening to be your parents’ super-close friend that you were just asking about a week before all this shit started?

Peter Parker: …probably?

Aunt May: Is there also an explanation for the Spider-Man costume you left sticking half out from under your bed the last time you got hit by a bus?

Peter Parker: I’m a…huge fan. And what bus.

Aunt May: You know what I’ve been doing since your uncle died and you stopped coming home before 2am?

Peter Parker: …no?

Aunt May: Reading the newspapers. All of them.

Peter Parker: Uh…

Aunt May: And watching the news.

Peter Parker: Uh…

Aunt May: And using the internet.

Peter Parker: Uh…

Aunt May: Did you know that it winds up all over all three of those things when you get hit by a bus while being chased by police helicopters?

Peter Parker: …

Aunt May: I have a powerpoint presentation ready to go with the GPS data from your phone on the relevant dates, if you’re going to keep this up.

Peter Parker: How did you even…

Aunt May: It’s even got accelerometer measurements. Matched up in real-time against news footage.

Peter Parker: …

Aunt May: Don’t give me that look. I’m not the one who took his smartphone to a monster-fight.

#anything that makes me laugh this much deserves a reblog

astrakiseki asked: *whispers* Nerdy little sphinx girl who plops next to the lady she’s riddling like an oversized cat and saying pun-ishment will be having to provide purr-fect pettings for a half hour.

astrakiseki:

pathopharmacology:

oh no oh no oh no

Stern lady adventurer who catches on to the pun thing in like two seconds flat and answers every single one with a totally straight face — “okay okay okay try this one: what did the scientist say about the book on anti-gravity?” “that it was impossible to put down?” “eeeeeee you guessed it!!!!!!“ — and at first the sphinx is super-excited because NO ONE EVER GUESSES PROPERLY, NO ONE!!!!!, but her elation soon turns to disappointment because the stern lady adventurer isn’t laughing and, like, that’s the whole point, and anyway the sphinx is hilarious, she knows she’s hilarious, puns are the bEST—

so basically it turns into a ridiculous and adorable adventure story where the sphinx decides she needs to accompany the stern lady adventurer on her travels because she is damn well going to make the woman crack a smile, and they get up to all sorts of shenanigans and the nerdy little sphinx girl puns her way out of half their scrapes and the stern lady adventurer is like “what” and “how” and “no”

The sphinx is all, “it’s probably a good thing you have me along, you know, because I make for a pretty great pawdyguard”

The stern lady adventurer scowls, all, “stop that,” and she IS NOT GOING TO SMILE at the way the little sphinx goes all wiggly and delighted

“Wait wait wait,” the sphinx says. “I have to tell you something. Me and you—”

“no. NO.”

“—make a TOTALLY—”

“don’t you dare”

“—PAWESOME TEAM!!!!!”

“oh gods why”

[shipping intensifies]

And the sphinx is just smiling and acting all kittenish until someone tries to attack the stern lady adventurer, then suddenly the sphinx pounces and defeats the idiot soundly.  The lady adventurer is wondering why did she go into a battle mode there and not during some of the scrapes they’ve been in.

“Beclaws I was hungry.”  The sphinx shrugs as she licks her paws clean.

And the lady adventurer just sighs again and covers her face again, shaking her head.

I went out for breakfast this morning and between ordering my meal and now, I have forgotten what I ordered.

I’m kind of excited to see what they bring me now.

Tagged: I have a master’s degree, and I run the budget for four departments at my office, I am an adult, an adult with a surprise breakfast coming.

Well…. what was the damned breakfast??

Two poached eggs rimed round with salt,
Soft cooked so that the yolk still runs;
What could be more delightful to exalt?

That I forgot my meal, I am at fault
But I always remember when it comes
Two poached eggs rimed round with salt!

And sausages in pancakes, rich with malt,
With syrup and sweet butter overrun,
What could be more delightful to exalt?

Nothing to make tender mouths revolt,
Sweet bread, spiced pork, by which I am undone:
Two poached eggs rimed round with salt

Such bright delights in one meal, near forgot:
Pancakes, sausage, juice like liquid sun,
Two poached eggs rimed round with salt.
What could be more delightful to exalt?

I don’t usually brag but I wrote that bastard on my phone during a staff meeting, and I’m feeling pretty awesome about it.

My not!sister makes these too:

/obligatory familial boost

Two or three times over the years, in two different Girl Guide troops, they taught us to make what they described as “Ukrainian Easter eggs”. Every single time, the Guiders appeared to think this would be a more novel way to celebrate Easter, rather than the normal boring Easter eggs that we would obviously already be familiar with.

To this day, I am unsure how else one makes Easter eggs.

My fannish!sister, whose family is…Wendish? Something Eastern European that’s not Ukranian, but the egg designs are similar, learned her technique from her mother. It involves little pots of dye, and wax. You plan out the design, and dip the egg in the first colour (let’s say yellow), then paint over in wax the parts that you want to keep yellow. Then you dip it in, say, green. Paint over what you want to keep green. Then dip it in red…etc. until you have the final design. Then you melt off the wax (I forget how) and poke a hole in the end to let the egg white/yolk gloop out. Very carefully! (Can’t remember why you do that at the end rather than the beginning—probably because the egg is more fragile for painting if it’s just the shell.)

There may be other ways to do it. When I was a kid, the few times we painted eggs involved watercolour paints and markers or something. :P Not the same.

You may have misinterpreted. I’m saying that the method you’re describing is the only way I have ever made Easter eggs. Every time there was an Easter-egg-making session of a group I was part of, it was always Ukrainian-style, the idea being (either implicitly or explicitly) that teenagers would be bored with the “usual” ways of making Easter eggs by now, so let’s try a different way. Thing is, I’ve never done the usual way, only “here’s what you do when you’re sick of the usual” (and always introduced to me as such).

(A bit like fairy tales, really. I learned Jack and the Beanstalk and Goldilocks and the like by watching Looney Tunes do several different parodies of each tale and noting the common elements. Nobody ever teaches you Fairy Tales 101 because they all assume somebody else already did, so you have to learn 101 by taking the advanced classes and reading between the lines.)

(I did suspect Easter Eggs 101 involved markers.)
