So it looks like we’re stuck on this broken site for a while, but could we try to avoid its most broken features? Chat posts and quote posts are really really hard to respond to. And they’re unnecessary. You can basically always put the same content in a text post. Text posts can easily start reblog chains where you can see clearly who said what. Thank you.

(Like I know we’re going to reblog other people’s quote/chat posts sometimes, I’m just saying when we’re making posts from scratch, let’s just use text posts)

Reminder that I have quote posts blocked so I don’t see them unless somebody pings me, and I periodically consider doing the same thing with chat posts, precisely because they’re so damn inconvenient to respond to and I don’t want to be tempted.

I agree.

(I do this naturally, because I post from Diaspora*, which doesn’t offer chat or quote posts.)

So the Rockbreaker’s Ceremony pre-festival push and raffle is starting up this Sunday, aaand I may have just volunteered as a dragon acceptor.

Eh, I was planning to spend the week in coli anyway. I’ll just be getting my fodder through CRs instead of from the AH. :D I’ll have to practice taking care of myself and being willing to knock off work at reasonable hours even if nobody else is online to take over, though… that should be interesting. ;P

(So, y’know, if you were planning to participate in the Rockbreaker’s raffle, consider throwing dragons at me starting Sunday… ^_^)

I was actually leaning towards not participating in the dom raffle (well, the dragon part; if they have daily trivia I’ll do that), because I defected during the last Lightning profit push and felt bad about it even though I had official permission (they said that since it was “about profit, not placement”, it was okay to exploit Nature’s ridiculous payouts instead of exalting ourselves). We got second place that week because of the efforts of people who ignored or didn’t hear that permission, and I felt like I was parasitising them. Lightning is going for bolstering next week, and I intend to Do My Part.

Perhaps I’ll send you one dragon for luck. I’ve heard OOF raffle accepting can get a bit overwhelming, so yes, please do take care of yourself.

*nodnod* I definitely get that. (One reason I switched to Earth, actually; in bigger flights I feel like such deadweight if I’m not exalting practically 24/7 any week we push.) Have fun, and I hope you do get bolstering! Are y’all pushing against anyone for second, do you know yet?

I haven’t heard anything about others. We’ll see.

Our predecessors kept things a bit ambiguous as to how much weight we ought to give to their opinions on the floor. Filing a lot of the records of the debates away in the warehouse where they keep the Ark of the Covenant, Madison keeping his notes secret and then published them after everyone involved was dead, that sort of thing. Since you’ve already shot down my suggestion about requiring courts to interpret everything by the literal text which is written entirely in Lojban, I have an alternate proposal.

I know most of you take a dimmer view of sticking to original intent than I do. And I was expecting you to change that opinion now it’s your intent that’s in question, but congrats on your consistency I guess. Now. This is going to be an ongoing debate in the coming centuries. People looking back at the opinions of anyone who was in this room where it happened and using our opinions as proof of what we Really Meant. (Yes, that’s going to include me. The guy who just gave a six-hour speech about electing an aristocracy.)

But.

What if we made it completely impossible for anyone to say “the Founding Parents intended to put [X] in the document; therefore it must be the meaning of the law”? No one, and I mean no one, taking that seriously ever again. I can give you that.

Imagine: some future scholar, poring over the text because she’s in eighth-grade social studies and might get called on soon. And she notices that if you take the first word of the Preamble, the second word of the first clause, and so forth, it spells out a 419 scam. Or it says that da Vinci shot Kennedy, or gives ambiguous directions to a nonexistent buried treasure, whatever you like. I’m open to suggestions. In any case, your least favorite mode of interpretation will be dead. 

Plus, hidden messages are cool.
