The Eclipse Phase, Second Edition Kickstarter is going awesome! We’ve unlocked sweet stretch goals like Your Whispering Muse Series 1, NPC File Volume 2, and a raise for our freelancers!

Today’s update also brings the start of the Open Playtest, so check it out if you’re curious about the mechanics of EP2 and helping shape them!

Bay Area people! Anyone want to run a session of this? I’ll GM.

So my friend and I were wondering about how new emojis are born.  Turns out you gotta write a proposal and submit it to the Unicode Consortium.  I was looking into it and found the proposal for the broccoli emoji (link).  It’s just so wholesome:

tumblr_inline_opelchxslz1rvyncq_540

You gotta justify that the new emoji has multiple uses.

tumblr_inline_opelgn211g1rvyncq_540

Then again, maybe not so wholesome:

By now, I’m like 5 pages into this proposal and I’m like, “why did someone take the time to write an 8 page document on why we need a broccoli emoji?”  Then I saw this:

These guys just really like broccoli.

I look forward to our new healthy vegetable / weed emoji.

Broccoli 4 lyfe

The broccoli fandom is a precious cinnamon roll

#tbh I still don’t really understand how to emoji but this is #adorable #I went to the link and read the whole proposal #(broccoli stems are fine but I don’t like the florets) #(although it might have been the kind of dislike that goes away with the tongue rewiring at puberty?) #(so it might taste better now I should check) #(spinach definitely tastes a lot better when you use adult sensory receptors to taste it with) #food

Jalak Bali

The Bali myna is a medium-large bird, almost wholly white with a long, drooping crest, black wing-tips and tail tip. It has a yellow bill with blue bare skin around the eyes and legs. The Bali myna is restricted to the island of Bali in Indonesia, where it is the island’s only endemic vertebrate species.  The bird was discovered in 1910, and in 1991 was designated the faunal emblem of Bali, its local name is jalak Bali.

Simon De Montfort, having been defeated and killed by Royalists, his body mutilated and his extremities distributed among his enemies as trophies, faces the final indignity: T.K. Maxx. Leicester, April 2017.

This will cause an extra parallel-universe cognitive glitch for my American friends, and I am excited for that to happen here

I’m amused to see Elodie’s addition, because yes, that is exactly what happened.

(Me, upon seeing this picture: ”–wait what? What???”

Me, upon scrolling down just enough to see the original caption: “You mean that’s not even what the picture is supposed to be about?”)

But why would they even–

‘The company modified the name to T.K. Maxx to avoid “confusion with the established British retail chain T J Hughes (which is not affiliated with TJX)“‘

Ah, okay.

(…wait, but if it’s not called that in Britain, why is there a bit in a Jasper Fforde book that goes like this:

“You imprisoned her in a clothing store?”

“It’s not really a clothing store; that’s just the cover story. Temporal Jail, Maximum Security. Didn’t you ever wonder why it was called TJ Maxx?”)

Because the rest of that acronym was “Temporal-J Maximum Security.” I always wondered why the “J” didn’t stand for anything!

And of course it would be entirely on-theme for a Thursday Next book to have editions with slightly different text.

>>And of course it would be entirely on-theme for a Thursday Next book to have editions with slightly different text.<<

Yeah, I wondered if maybe that just wasn’t in the original, but I’m not sure how cleanly you could excise the TJ Maxx joke given that a plot conversation takes place there. Was Aornis stuck at the checkout of a different store in the original, possibly one with an impenetrably British joke? (But a reference being impenetrably obscure has never stopped Jasper Fforde before.)

Does anyone have a British copy of First Among Sequels they can check?

>>I always wondered why the “J” didn’t stand for anything!<<

I did some Googling and at first it looked like you were thinking of a bit in The Woman Who Died A Lot, which I haven’t read yet. I was thinking of First Among Sequels.

But then I went and looked at my copy of First Among Sequels, and that doesn’t specify what the J stands for, either.

I mean, I might have just filled it in from context, but it kind of looks
like we have a Berenstain situation on our hands in more ways than one.

The update to the default Tumblr theme seems to break readmores.

#The Great Tumblr Apocalypse #my theme *was* the default when I joined in 2011 #but it isn’t anymore and isn’t the theme in question #but some of you might want to see this

I wasn’t sure, at first, why I was thinking about it today in particular, but then I realised that–depending on whether I’m remembering the context right–it may very well have been six years ago precisely. It’s probably close, at any rate.

After all this time, (in something like irony), I still remember her telling me it was unreasonable to expect people to remember something I’d said last week.

(It hadn’t even been last week. It was yesterday. Part of the same ongoing conversation.)

She didn’t frame it as her having a bad memory–that would have been something else entirely–but as *my*…my arrogance in thinking that somebody might bother to remember things I’d said from one day to the next, my unrealistic demand for any continuity in my social relationships.

(I’d been hanging out with that group for over four months. (If I’m remembering the timing right. Dates are not my strong suit memory-wise. Perhaps people weren’t hers, but that isn’t what she said.))

I don’t know whether I still believe she’s right. I don’t want to believe it. Maybe I just *fear* that she’s right.

But I *still* feel surprised whenever people reference things I said earlier, whenever anyone outside my immediate family gives enough of a shit about me to remember me from one day to the next.

(And when they don’t–when they ask me the same questions over and over, when they tell me (after *two years*!) that I’m not worth arguing with because they only argue with people they know–I sigh, and I wonder if perhaps it is what I deserve.)

—

It occurs to me that possibly this is some sort of divide between people who think of people on the Internet as interchangeable NPCs and people who don’t. Both of the most egregious instances *were* on the Internet, after all.

It’s a slightly different flavour of horrible than how I was originally thinking of it. Instead of the reliability of “*all* of your friends think of you as an interchangeable NPC”, it’s “a significant percentage of your friends think of you as an interchangeable NPC, but you don’t know how large a percentage and you mostly don’t know which ones”.

(And it still means that in day-to-day social interactions, I generally don’t get to trust that people have any idea what I’m talking about without providing full context every time.

…I think I’m beginning to realise how much that’s been eating away at me, and how much it’s part of the appeal of rationalist Tumblr: I can’t trust people to understand references to things *I* said, but there *do* exist previous statements and conversations that I can reference and safely predict that people will understand.)

Anonymous asked: Unverified claim I coincidentally heard today relevant to your post about ‘useless’ infomercial products: assistive devices for disabled people get confusingly marketed to general audiences in order to avoid trouble with regulations about selling medical devices, which would come up if the marketing mentioned use for disability.

sinesalvatorem:

theunitofcaring:

…that is super interesting. I looked into it, and it seems reasonably legit: the FDA rules on marketing medical devices (defined expansively enough to include manual toothbrushes) require for example that before marketing the device you prove it is substantially equivalent to an existing device, or qualifies for an exemption (or if there’s no existing device you prepare and submit a De Novo request but wow lotsa paperwork), and comply and demonstrate compliance with a bunch of regulatory standards.

That’s easily hours and hours of lawyer time, and it makes sense that a small business making plastic sleeves that help you put on your shoes, or self-stabilizing spoons that are obviously meant for people with Parkinsons, would decide to avoid counting as a medical device at all costs.

Also worth noting that, thanks to the curb cut effect, non-disabled people buying disability products is very good for the disabled people who need them. So, even if marketing to a general audience is done for legal reasons, general audiences should very much not be shamed for buying these products. Doing so is actively good for the people who need them.
