not a big fan of that captcha thing where you gotta wait 30 minutes for google to decide if it wants to show you another bus

and that captcha thing where it never explicitly tells you if you succeeded or not, so you’re never sure if it’s making you do it like six times because you suck or because it’s just Like That

it reliably makes me do more on my browser With Adblock And Shit, whereas my chrome sellout browser just lets me press the button, so I figure it’s just like that

anyway with the fade out / in buses I think I noticed it doesn’t start the fade in until you focus the tab again, which is Hell

Yeah, in some ways having to do it like six times is a sign that I’ve *succeeded*: not at finding buses, but at preventing Google from tracking my identity.

I don’t think I’ve ever unfocused the tab, so I hadn’t noticed that part.

Update: on multiple occasions reCAPTCHA *has* now explicitly claimed that I failed to find all the crosswalks, and refused to let me through until I agreed to lie and say that those pictures that were clearly *rumble strips* were actually crosswalks. There was likewise an occasion where it wouldn’t let me through until I agreed to claim that an RV was a bus.

(if they’re using this as some kind of self-driving-car training program I shudder to think how that’s going)

shieldfoss:

Depends on the context! You need enough chuggas to establish that we are on a steam train before it makes sense to your audience that you are blowing a steam whistle – so if you’re at a bar and people have been talking about “chugging” beer all night, you may need several chuggas to get the btrain going in the right direction but if you’re already on a train you can just do the arm motion and say “choo choo” without even a single chugga.

rendakuenthusiast:

I said this ditty to myself to see what I did and I produced *four* chuggas before the choo choo. Any fewer chuggas than that seems insufficient; and more than four is certainly acceptable, although with much more than four you start to bore your audience.

shieldfoss:

Just sitting here I’m on like 16 chuggas.

sang-the-sun-in-flight:

8 is my default

sigmaleph:

if your number of chuggas isn’t divisible by 4 then what the hell are you doing

I agree that no chuggas are required if you are already on a train (and similarly trainful situations like “pointing at a train”), but for other circumstances:

There’s a use/mention distinction. When *mentioning* “chugga chugga choo choo” it’s two chuggas, but when *using* it it’s eight chuggas.

(This is probably because of the same fundamental psychological reasons that cause there to be eight “nana”s before “Batman”.)

anyway how do I get firefox to remember my web history forever

@moonlit-tulip, you eventually gave up on getting this to work per se, right? Have you tried that repurpose-web-scraping-software-to-make-a-URL-archive idea yet?

I actually got indefinite history-saving working, a bit over a month ago! I’m not confident it’s going to stay working forever—they already broke it on me the once, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did so again eventually—but, for the moment, I’ve got essentially three tricks, in ascending order of difficulty.

First: go into settings, and in the History section, set it to “Firefox will: Remember history”. This is the default for that setting, so it’s probably not a concern; but, if you changed it in the past for whatever reason, changing it back will ensure that your history gets saved and doesn’t get deleted after the end of each browser session.

Second: in about:config, change the value of places.history.expiration.max_pages from its default value to a very large number of your choice. (I went with 2147483647, because that’s the maximum and I didn’t see any reason not to.) By default, Firefox has a limit on how many history entries it will store, and will start auto-deleting the oldest ones as you open new pages; I don’t know of any way to avoid the limit entirely, but setting that number high enough is the next-best thing. Supposedly your browser will start slowing down as it saves more history entries, though, so… be warned? (I haven’t experienced this firsthand, but also I only discovered that setting a bit over a month ago, so my history hasn’t had much time to build up yet.)

Third: use BrowsingHistoryView to export your history to CSV, and update your backup every few months, such that if Firefox does start deleting older history again you won’t lose what you’ve got. If your history is anywhere near as large as mine, the resulting CSV files will likely be large and annoying to work with; but it’s still worth it, as least for me, for the peace-of-mind value it gives.

hmm well they’ve probably been monkeying with it, then, because I actually have slightly different about:config stuff here – specifically I’m seeing only a transient current max pages, which won’t let me put in a number nearly that large (I’m on 78.0.2).

the search continues!

There’s a plus sign button at the bottom right of the config interface; if you do a search for places.history.expiration.max_pages, set the type to “number”, and then click that plus sign, it’ll create the entry. At that point it should work as I described; I’m on the same Firefox version, so there shouldn’t be any underlying differences interfering.

(I’d forgotten, at the time of the previous reblog, needing to create the entry myself like that. But, in retrospect, I’m pretty sure I actually did need to.)

i love how podcast fandoms have a way of producing fifty million versions of the same character’s appearance and yet you know exactly which character it is every time

especially when there’s practically no canonical description of the character in question

i may not know what cecil “the voice of night vale” gershwin palmer or jonathan “the archivist” sims look like but i sure can tell them apart at a glance

This is a really interesting parallel to art of deities in classical civs (I don’t remember this lecture super well, but I’m trying!) Basically, you could tell which deity the artist was depicting not based on their features, but by their iconography: Artemis would be depicted with a bow, or dogs, or deer, so that you could tell it was her. I’m pretty sure the same concept is in action here! Different characters are depicted with different color palettes and motifs (such as eyes and tape recorders) so that you can tell who it is.

I just think that’s really cool.

Yeah, this. Like I’m not even very far into tma but I still know that it’s

As someone who has spent time with professional ornithologists and has seen people make 500-mile trips to see a Single Species Of Hummingbird i can say without a single doubt that wizards being discovered cus they keep bringing their nonnative birds places is a completely realistic scenario

dreamlogic:

i’m imagining a bunch of very confused ornithologists trying to research the appearance of non-native owls in scotland, but they keep getting turned around by hogwarts’ anti-muggle defenses and it’s this endless cycle of

“well, we know that within this few mile radius of undisturbed highlands, there are massive concentrations of owls that Should Not Be Here. we know the owls are here, we know where they hunt and approximately where they return to roost but we just. we jsut. can’t find a SINGLE fucking nest??? anywhere?????? every owl we tag has their tracker malfunction RIGHT HERE but whenever i investigate i somehow end up back home in my slippers with a cup of tea.”

ALSO there were a bunch of ancient (okay from 2014) SCP games on it?? and a Gameboy Emulator and a copy of the game Lifehouse, based off the concept album The Who tried to write in the 70’s, but Pete Townsend got too lost in the sauce or whatever and had a mental breakdown and never finished it
