glumshoe:

a power move is writing Stephen King into your horror novel as a minor character

I mean, you’re not wrong. But what story are you writing and when can I read it?

glumshoe:

It’s a story about a clown who is wrongfully blamed for the murder of a child and is killed by vigilante townsfolk who don’t accept his innocent verdict. Years later, after bouncing from one foster home to the next, his daughter returns to Maine as an adult and decides to avenge her father… by murdering Stephen King, who she blames for inciting the anti-clown mass hysteria that killed her father.

(I’m not writing this book. I should.)

nanofishology:

Stephen King wrote himself into the books he wrote as Richard Bachman though.

Though… I think he ended up killing Richard Bachman off instead?

glumshoe:

He’s written himself into a lot of his books. That’s why I think Stephen King should be considered a public domain character as soon as he turns 75.

After seeing that last comment I hit reblog SO fast

glumshoe:

Dracula, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, and Stephen King: a classic public domain lineup.

For anybody wondering about how Automattic changed the Privacy Policy (old / new) & TOS (old / new) but doesn’t want to read either, I just ran a quick comparison of each document through DiffChecker.

The changes are as follows:

  1. Replaced all references to Yahoo!/Verizon/Oath with references to Automattic
  2. Removed a sentence claiming Yahoo!’s search engine is superior to Google’s
  3. Removed a link to Tumblr’s old meetup page, which no longer exists
  4. Changed some punctuation

That’s it. The only difference in site policy is that Automattic is in charge instead of Yahoo!; everything else about how you interact with Tumblr and how it handles your data is identical.

Okay, thank you for doing this homework so I didn’t have to. MUCH appreciated. I was pretty sure there was no difference and I saw no red flags, but I forgot about DiffChecker.

This is useful information but also point 2 is just goddamn hilarious

in case you’re curious:

Because this kind of information can be seen by anyone and may be indexed by search engines (like Google Search, or the far superior Yahoo Search), you should be careful about what you choose to disclose publicly and make sure it’s information you want to share with everyone.

(the new version just removes that parenthetical)

is there any temptation greater than being in the hardware store and seeing the place where they have all the little cards for the colours

zagreus:

as someone who works in the paint department of a hardware store i just wanna say that you are absolutely allowed (and ENCOURAGED!) to grab as many cards off the rack as you want so long as you don’t take more than one or two of each colour (they are free for customers but the store only gets so many at a time so please don’t just walk off with our ENTIRE supply of SW 7587 Antique Red cards)

madmanswords:

That’s too specific. Have people been stealing the SW 7587 Antique Red cards in droves lately?

zagreus:

legally i am not allowed to comment

recoil-operated:

I’m too cheap to actually buy paint so I’ve been going to every hardware store in collecting all the SW 7587 antique red cards and gluing them to my walls

PSA: TinyPic image hosting to shut down September 16

ao3org:

The image hosting service TinyPic has announced they will permanently shut down on September 16, 2019. To make sure their users know, TinyPic has made it so any images hosted on their servers no longer appear on third-party sites like AO3. Instead, a notice about TinyPic’s closure displays in the images’ place.

We strongly urge anyone using TinyPic-hosted images for their fanworks to back up their images as soon as possible.

I just got my Alcor membership finalized! I have the amulet and everything!

\o/

Oddly enough, I was just researching cryonics myself these past two days.

My conclusion was “given my current financial situation, increasing my expenses by ~USD$1k/year is probably more likely to get me killed than not immediately signing up for vitrification is”. (yes I saw the Cryonics Institute, but frankly I would not trust any sort of long-term facility in *Detroit* further than I could throw it) Alcor membership is now #6 on my list of Things to Save Up For Once My Finances Permit Saving Up That Much, below the non-shitty car but above the fire-escape ladder.

(I get the impression that the demographics are pretty different, but cryonics nevertheless parses to me as a Neat Prepper Thing. I have a soft spot for things that one will likely never find useful but will be *extremely glad for* if one does.)
