Ever since reading Jingo, I’ve been wondering what happened in the other leg of the trousers of Time.

All we really know is that the Klatchians attack Ankh-Morpork, take the city, and a bunch of people die.

Carrot dies. Littlebottom dies. Reg Shoe dies…more, or again, or something. Dorfl and Detritus both die, within minutes of each other, which makes me really curious about what kind of firepower the other guys had. Vimes dies.

Vetinari presumably gets killed or captured, which means captured, which means he’s fine. And pity the poor invaders who have to occupy a city that contains Sybil Ramkin. I can never keep track of what order the books happen in, but if Moist was in the city when the army was arriving he proceeded to manage not to be. The wizards will notice that the city fell when they miss the next daily delivery of a week’s worth of food.

The thing is, though, this isn’t all that destabilizing. I mean, mass death, bad, but the city has a procedure for this. When the bodies have been carted away and buried or tossed in the Ankh to make it that much cleaner, the first Morporkian voice you hear belongs to the most Morporkian person there is.

“Meat pies! Sausage inna bun! Hot dogs! Onna stick!”

Because when the invaders are battering down the walls, you open the doors and sell them things and before you know it they’re as Morporkian as you are. There’s most of a national anthem about it. Ankh-Morpork the province of Klatch is going to be worse than before. Most of the Watch and a lot of bystanders are dead, and Vetinari can’t keep the Guilds handled until he gets back in power. But it’s still Ankh-Morpork. And even with half our favorite characters gone, well, the Turtle moves.

Can’t think of any, but I’m sure it’s out there somewhere. Anyone else know?

someone…someone really needs to be doing this…

Anonymous asked: Discalculia and prosopagnosia might be worth adding to the list

{{previous post in sequence}}

sothatswhatthatis:

Dyscalculia:  Dyscalculia is difficulty in learning or comprehending arithmetic, such as difficulty in understanding numbers, learning how to manipulate numbers, and learning facts in mathematics. It is generally seen as a specific developmental disorder.

Prosopagnosia: an inability to recognize the faces of familiar people, typically as a result of damage to the brain. (”face blindness”)

Alexithymia:  an inability to identify and understand emotions and their subtleties and textures. (”emotional blindness”)

Alexithymia added by me!

~James

Actually, most prosopagnosics are born with it. (I know that study’s pretty small, but I knew of it off the top of my head, and it is proof of concept.) I’m not sure whether the crossover point has happened yet, but certainly early on most people known to have prosopagnosia got it from brain damage; however, that’s because those people had memories of not being faceblind to compare their current state to, so they knew what they were missing. Congenital prosopagnosics are far more likely than acquired ones to have a “so that’s what that is!” moment.

Also, it’s not all-or-nothing. Only the most severe prosopagnosia causes a total inability to recognise faces; the rest of us “just” take months or years of exposure to learn a given face as well as normal people would learn it immediately, and have a much greater tendency to forget faces over time.

thanks for the correction! i didnt know what prosopagnosia was so i googled it and copied + pasted the definition google gave me!

Crazy Stuff! I’ve revamped my YouTube Channel! You might even say it’s “New” and “Improved”. I now have a legitimate director with multiple episodes in the works! So excited- check it out! I really appreciated your feedback last time and would love to hear from everyone again.

Yeah, the first thing that hit me when I saw it was “Wow, this looks a lot more professional”. I think you’ve improved your talking speed, too.

The nametags on the photographs were a nice touch. Part joke, part genuine reassurance, part practising the awareness you preach. A lot of things about unusual conditions (even relatively common ones like prosopagnosia, synesthesia, or autism) have this assumption that nobody with that condition is actually in the audience: they’re all over *waves vaguely* there somewhere, not here among us. (Like, I can understand explicitly aiming a 101 thing at people who don’t have it, but it never seems to be a deliberate choice to concentrate on a particular segment of their audience, rather just forgetting there are any other segments than that one.) The nametags make me hopeful that you’re not going to fall into that trap.

(I actually watched the video before you posted this, because I was still subscribed to your YouTube channel and it alerted me. Things like this are why I never unfollow someone for inactivity alone.)

Thank you so much! We’ve put a lot of work into polishing it, so it’s great to hear the effort was noticed. My director is here for an unknown limited time, so we’re going to try to get as many info-based videos up as possible to maintain the professionalism, but when I’m back to just myself, the quality will probably dip a bit (I just don’t think I could do as good a job editing as he has done).

And thanks! The name tags are going to be a permanent feature, though they might be mixed up a bit, like in the 1st full episode. I want to make sure anyone can start watching on any episode and still follow who’s playing any characters or know who’s in the photos.

We’re expecting to get another video out late next week, but I’m recording my presentation on Friday, so it will probably be delayed so we can incorporate some of that footage into Episode 2

What Universal Human Experiences Are You Missing Without Realizing It?

{{previous post in sequence}}

comparativelysuperlative:

It took me approximately forever to find out I was faceblind.
In retrospect, the incident with telling someone she looked like Evil Galadriel from the FotR movie and having everyone including her deny it…makes a lot more sense.

#prosopagnosia  #that is such a boring tag; does anyone have more interesting suggestions?

brin-bellway:

“You humans all look alike to me”?

(I was thirteen myself. Since autism and prosopagnosia are often found together, when I started reading autism neurodiversity blogs it came up early and often. I was occasionally confused as a kid when others could not only tell people with the same hair colour and style apart, but expected me to do the same.)

As for the article, I do wonder what experiences I might be missing. I have gradually figured out over the course of my life that my emotional range is non-standard: I appear to be missing awe entirely, I don’t feel limerence but I do feel perseveration* (which I’m told is both a similar feeling and one that most people lack), I have most** of the sex-related emotions but in such a way as to make them nearly unrecognisable (so I’m missing out on other people’s experiences of them, but everyone else is missing out on mine), my mother says that she experiences frustration as an emotion all its own rather than a sub-type of anger so apparently that’s a thing. (There might still be other emotional divergences I don’t know about yet.) I don’t know what thorns sound like (though I do know what eths sound like). I’m not entirely convinced that sour and bitter are actually separate flavours to me; I’ve been meaning to investigate that further. There’s probably others I don’t even suspect.

*Well, I did, and I still could if I allowed myself. The beginning stages are so unpleasant that once I figured out how to nip it in the bud (also age thirteen, as it happens), the temptation to do so was overwhelming.

**I don’t seem to have anything even resembling “looking at someone and wanting to fuck them”, not counting extenuating circumstances like the person being in a sexually suggestive pose.

justice-turtle:

I didn’t know prosopagnosia by that name, but I read “Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass” around age three and Humpty Dumpty’s “your faces are all the same, now if the mouth was at the top or both eyes on the same side I might be able to recognize you again” clicked with me really hard. (I didn’t realize the experience I wasn’t having was supposed to be a universal one for a lot longer – I’d try to explain that I’d been late to swimming class because I couldn’t figure out which instructor around the pool was mine, for instance, and people didn’t argue, they just didn’t seem to pay any attention to me, so I stopped mentioning it, and instead focused on learning to read enough body language to tell when somebody thought they recognized me and was expecting me to come over and say hi or be in their class or whatever. I suppose it makes me extremely vulnerable to con artists pretending to be an old friend – I did very nearly get kidnapped at age five by some people in a car who said they were friends of my mother’s, which I had no reason to doubt, except that I was wearing a thrift-store t-shirt and they called me by the name on it, which was nothing like my name, so I backed away slowly and then ran in the house. But nothing like that’s happened since then, because people expect me to have enough facial recognition to know that they are not actually a long-lost friend etc. So I guess it works out. ^_^)

Like Brin, I don’t experience limerence – thank god, it sounds really unpleasant – although around puberty I managed to sort of mishmash-mangle the experiences of finding a guy hot and having my bio-incubator (who is massively romo and cannot comprehend that anyone could be otherwise) aggressively ship me with him at the same time, into something that seems in retrospect more like limerence than like anything else, except that it was on my part very much deliberate – Dorothy Sayers has a bit where Harriet Vane muses on “persuading oneself into appropriate feelings” for somebody one is dating, which clicked with me re this – and that it lasted for about fourteen years give or take, which I am fairly certain limerence on the same person is not supposed to do.

(I was extreeeemely sexually repressed and for several years also had nonexistent libido as a side effect of severe depression, all of which made the “I find him hot so I am trying to read romo feelings into this” thing even more confusing… ^_^)

Like Brin, also, I do experience perseveration, although I don’t find it particularly unpleasant. I did get teased/bullied about it a lot as a kid, so I developed the habit of keeping absolutely quiet about the objects of my perseverations until they’d faded down to the point where I could talk about ‘em without going constantly on and on; I’m trying to work on being more open now about when I’m having a new perseveration (it’s almost always something fannish, a character or fandom or whatnot), while hitting a balance where I don’t bore everyone to death or drag too many conversations off-topic because I’m so obsessed with this one thing. Perseveration has produced most of my fanfic, though – I’d be perseverating on one character and become able to write their voice really accurately, so I’d churn out a few fics centered on them and then move on – so I feel like it’s been, y’know, overall a net positive in my life, and while I can’t figure out how to turn it off, I don’t know that I’d want to, either. :-)

I know I can only smell certain specific things (I can tell wood smoke from charcoal smoke from various kinds of tobacco smoke, but apparently can’t smell pot), and my sense of taste varies according to how depressed I am – after I started meds at age 26, I went through a brief stage of being really startled that e.g. peanut butter had a flavor. Most of my perception of food is texture; I still don’t pay a lot of attention to flavor unless it’s really strong, although I do find myself enjoying the sweet-and-salty thing you get in a lot of peanut-caramel-chocolate desserts. I don’t tend to like spicy food; I don’t like sushi because the raw-fish texture throws me, but I love most breaded things because the breading texture gives me something familiar to focus on and then the texture of the thing underneath doesn’t bother me as much. (I won’t eat shrimp unless it’s breaded popcorn shrimp, for example.)

…I don’t know, I’ve probably wandered way off the topic here. It’s an interesting topic, though. :D

(see also this other branch I was in)

DETROIT – The three body modification artists were arrested today on charges of voluntary manslaughter after a past client suffered a fatal stroke, allegedly due to thaumo-alchemical interactions between her prescribed potions and a luck charm that had been placed on one of her tattoos without her knowledge.

“Some potions and drugs are known to react with common charms, which is why it is absolutely essential that your doctor and pharmacist have a complete and accurate list of your active enchantments,” says pharmacist Patricia Patil. “Putting an enchantment of any kind, no matter how minor, on someone without their knowledge or permission is playing Russian Roulette with someone else’s life.”

The victim, Carmen Jackson, was 36 at the time of her death and is survived by a husband and 4 children.

justice-turtle:

“#death tw #yes this #I did not think this *exact* thing #but I did wonder why we were assumed to sympathise with people tricking others into taking spells”

Because consent isn’t part of our cultural narrative. Patriarchalism is – people assumed to be “wiser” doing what’s Best for other people without needing input from those stupid lower-class people who would reject the help out of fear and superstition and who never know what’s Actually Good for them.

Us, the lower classes and poors in this country, we know we’re shat on, but it’s still a long row to hoe challenging this internalized narrative, that if somebody who Knows Better than you (upperclass, educated, ~the Wise~) is doing what’s Good for you, they don’t need your consent or even to tell you what’s going on.

In skiffy, there’s a trope of the person who has to Decide The Fate Of Others angsting about it, feeling unworthy, actually addressingthe fact that they’re making big honkin’ decisions about people’s lives without their consent… but the angst isn’t about whether the decisions should be made (and in skiffy there generally isn’t time or any achievable way to get everybody’s input), but over whether THE PERSON ANGSTING is “worthy”, is Wise enough, because they weren’t brought up to feel that deciding the fate of others is their job, they feel it’s the job of those higher up the totem pole who’ve done the deciding on the person’s own fate. If they had more time, the ability to consult, it’s not suggested that they should take the opinions of the people whose lives will be affected, but of their superiors who have more of a “right” to fuck with people’s situations.

brin-bellway:

Perhaps so, although I distrust anything involving the word “internalised” for actually pretty much the same reason: it tends to carry a very similar note of “we know you better than you know yourself, if you disagree with us on what’s Actually Good for you it’s only because you lack insight* into your problems”. There’s no defence against a charge like that. (You’d think “I’m second-generation social justice; sure, I had some contact with other, patriarchal subcultures, but I’m not a proverbial fish and my native tongue does have a word for water (you should know, it’s the tongue you’re speaking now)” would have at least some effect, but nobody ever really seems to notice when I say that. Besides, we born-and-raised types are rare enough that everyone else routinely forgets we exist, and other people deserve not to have that pulled on them too.)

*Here used in the psych jargon sense of “awareness that something is wrong with your mind”.

justice-turtle:

Hmm. *thinky face is thinky* When I use “internalized” it’s always in the context of me and my own upbringing in a patriarchal subculture – e.g. here “this internalized narrative” was sort of shorthand for “I first read the OP as completely unproblematic, part of my brain went AUGH SUBVERSIVE LIARS BADWRONG DON’T LISTEN at the suggestion that it could be problematic, and so now I’m thinkyposting about why that happened” – so I didn’t even notice that it might read differently to other people.

*continues to thinky but not currently in words*

brin-bellway:

Hi! I’m the person who wrote those tags justice-turtle is responding to. I noticed this in the recent notes while pressing the “like” button on our conversation about it.

I admit I flinched when I realised you’d seen us talking negatively about your post (conflict-avoidance ftw), but it went surprisingly well. I’m glad you agree with the main point, and I’m sorry you keep having to see people taking the OP the wrong way.

Have you considered a note-blocker extension? You sound like you could really use one. People will still be taking your post at face value, unfortunately, but at least you won’t have reminders of that constantly thrown in your face. I’ve never used one myself (never had a post go viral), so I can’t recommend any particular one from personal experience, but XKit has a NotificationBlock extension and I’m pretty sure there are independent note-blocker add-ons too. (They generally work on individual posts, so you’d still get notes from your other posts.)

northcentralpositronics-blog:

“I admit I flinched when I realised you’d seen us talking negatively about your post” – I WATCH YOU ALL I KNOW ALL I SEE ALL NO-ONE IS SAFE

but seriously, worrying people like that is one of the reasons I rarely respond to commentary on this post, b/c I too have conflict issues (…proooobably another reason I struggle with commentary like this, to be honest) and sympathise a lot with that lurching “oh crap they saw the thing” feeling.

I’m not sure I’d say people are taking the OP the wrong way, exactly. What worries me is that the way people are taking it – presenting the scenario as romantic and A-OK – is what’s presented in the post. So I can’t really say it’s wrong to read it that way, although it may have been wrong of me not to clarify in the post itself. I just continue to curse the fact that it went… “viral” may be a strong word, but close enough. That it spread so much.

Anyway, thank you, and I do keep meaning to get onto that XKit extension. Sadly, I am a loser who keeps whining about things and then not fixing them. HOORAY FOR LETHARGY!

(I know OP said they didn’t want people reblogging and especially necroing this post, but I’m going to go ahead for two reasons. First, this is a version including the explanation of how it wasn’t intended to be, as they put it, “romantic and A-OK”; second, OP hasn’t posted anything to northcentralpositronics-blog in over two years†, so it looks like they aren’t being subjected to the notestream from this post anymore regardless of whether they ever ended up installing a noteblocker.)

†If I understand their sidebar correctly, Tumblr fuckery locked them out of that account, and they had to get a new one.

*sees post with pictures of very popular actor they look at pictures of all day*

*tags it with name of very popular actor*

*almost clicks the reblog button*

*checks pictures five times to make sure the pictures actually portray very famous actor and not someone who looks a bit like him*

*feels ashamed because they literally look at pictures of very famous actor all day so it’s very embarrassing not to be sure if it’s really him*

Would you like advice or do you just want to vent? I don’t want to go barging in here with tips if that wouldn’t be appropriate.

it’s okay! i wouldn’t mind advice :)

I’ve found the TagViewer extension for XKit to be very helpful for this situation. To give a relatively recent example (that I’m not sure whether I ever actually reblogged, but it’s still a good example of the process):

1. See gifset of person who may or may not be Taylor Swift playing with small fluffy animals.

2. Press TagViewer button on post.

3. Scroll through the list of reblogs with tags and what tags they used. See that the majority of reblogs with any tags at all contain the tag “taylor swift”, “tswift”, “tay-tay”, or other variations thereupon. See that nobody has tagged it with a name other than Taylor Swift.

4. Feel much more confident that the picture is of Taylor Swift now that you’ve gotten dozens of concurring opinions.

right! thanks :D

So No One Ever Thought it Pertinent to Mention There’s a Biopic of Franz Mesmer Starring Alan Rickman?

So it turns out as a movie it is pretty problematic and shitty but a good 25% of it is Alan Rickman wearing swishy cloaks trancing (or something like it) ladies who realllllyyyyyy seem to enjoy it.  But he just keeps whining about healing the world and science and stuff.

image

This is for science.

image

And medicine.

image

Not sexy at all.

SHE WANTS THE T. (T=trance)

image

Goddamn that little handhold in a hypno context can just be the most intimate thing.

Ugh Hans Gruber Snape Mesmer Rickman stop making me love you.

image

Not sexual.  Nope.

image

NOTE This character is pretty much moaning at this point.  Because getting your blindness treated is hawt.

image

Prettttttty sure I do something like this in trance.

image

I guess this could be kinky but she’s already blind.

image

Like I said, there’s a lotta dis.

AW YEAH GET IT GURL AND BY “IT” I MEAN YOUR VISION AND THERFORE AN EYEFUL OF SEXY HYPNOTIST ALAN RICKMAN.

ALL THE FRENCH ROYAL LADIES WANT THE T.

Same.

Wait I think I saw a porno like this once.

WHAT THE FUCK HE IS MAKING A ROOM FULL OF FRENCH LADIES HAVE AN ORGASM.  THIS MOVIE IS NOT EVEN PRETENDING MESMERISM ISN’T SEXUAL.  WHAT IS GOING ON.  WHY IS THIS MOVIE SHITTY/GREAT?

image

YOU TOO ALAN?

image

GREATEST.

image

MOVIE.

image

SCENE.

image

EVER.

In conclusion: Thank you, Dr. Mesmer.  You hoped your work would cure suffering and disease, and eventually your legacy resulted in freaks like me getting off on it.  And you got a shitty biopic that was kinda hot in a weird way, even by hypnofetishist standards.  Mazel tov.

Also, Alan Rickman can get it.

SWAG

You hoped your work would cure suffering and disease, and eventually your legacy resulted in freaks like me getting off on it.

To be fair, this was totally a thing at the time. Consider, for instance, this extended quote regarding the morality of “animal magnetism”. which is basically a bunch of medical commissioners being extremely suspicious of how much resemblance hypnosis bears to sex. I think there might be other choice quotes in that book, too, but that was the easiest one to find.

(The book’s an interesting read, regardless. The late-1700′s conception of hypnosis described in the historical sections is pretty much unrecognisable from a turn-of-the-millennium point of view (my turn-of-the-millennium point of view, anyway), and even the “modern-day” (1890′s) sections are very different.)

WOW, thanks for that kickass link!!!!
