I used to bike past a cemetery every day, and whenever I did I’d get this song going through my head.

Along with the Ood chanting “the circle must be broken.”

…somehow, my brain never juxtaposed those two things. Well, it will from now on, I expect.

Even before reading this, though, I always thought it was a bit odd how a song celebrating the circle of life argued against the “boredom” pro-mortality reasoning: “there is more to see than can ever be seen/more to do than can ever be done”.

(It is only just now occurring to me they might have meant more to see than can be seen within one lifetime, rather than within eternity. Probably because the part of me that read Ringworld at a very young age heard that line and immediately thought of the main character of said book, who swore to live forever because “how else could he see all there was to see?”)

(After writing that quote, I checked it using the Amazon “search inside this book” feature. Despite not having read the book in over a decade, probably at least half my life, I got the quote exactly right. Could be luck, but possibly Ringworld was more of a formative experience than I realised.)

I have all these sweet feels about Odo’s Bajoran security officer squad. They all look like him. They all wear their hair like him. They’re all beige like him. They must have been so lonely without him these last few days, while he’s been holed up in his quarters with She Who Must Not Be Named, and they’ve been stuck with Damar as a boss, and doesn’t that suck, and all of a sudden Odo rolls in full of piss and vinegar and shouts, “Let’s go shoot some Cardassians,” and they’re all like,

So, I was in the car today and saw someone with the license plate “X0DUS3 5”, so I thought it was like Exodus 3:5 and I looked it up, and do you know what it said?

“Do not come any closer.”

Now that’s a well done biblical license plate.

Fic: A Wrench in the Works (Jensen, Lopez)

eponymous-rose:

Katie Jensen, mechanic extraordinaire, meets her counterpart on Red Team. Some things don’t need translation.

Minor spoilers for 13×02. Written for this week’s rvb60min challenge.

[AO3 | FFN | 2015 Fic | 2014 Fic]

“Hi,” he says. “I’m Lopez. Apparently I’m supposed to help you with the warped axle on this Warthog.”

Okay, no, what he actually says is more along the lines of “Hi, I’m Lopez, something something something me something something car something-that-maybe-means-pencil,” because Katie Jensen failed miserably every time she tried to learn another language and Spanish class back in high school was no exception.

“Um,” she says. She recognizes him as one of the Reds and Blues, but doesn’t know him, which means he was probably one of the people on the Fed side of the fence. She’s been so busy the past few weeks that introductions have been kinda low on the priority list. “Hi, Lopez. I’m Katie. Sorry. I don’t speak Spanish.”

He grunts, folds his arms, mutters something.

“But you understand English, huh?” She brightens. “Wait, no, hang on a sec!” It takes her a moment to shuffle out from under the Warthog and dig up her pack, but right at the bottom is the ancient little datapad, and she crows victoriously when she finds it still has a bit of charge. “Hah! Got it!”

Lopez is still watching her, arms folded.

“Translator,” she says. “If you speak real slow and clear, it’s usually pretty good.”

Lopez jolts, takes a step closer. He says something that the translator picks up; she shows him the word Seriously? as it prints across the screen.

[The greatest what if that may ever exist from the tng/ds9/voy era to me will always be: what would a war between the Dominion and the Borg be like? I look at any maps that include both and the space just seems small sometimes. The Borg were supposed to have a transwarp conduit that led there, so what would that be like?]
