Singer-songwriter Vienna Teng may not seem like an obvious geek culture icon, but she’s found a new audience through an unlikely source: fanvidding.
Fanvids have been around for decades, usually taking the form of clips from TV shows and movies set to a carefully chosen song. The best ones take days or weeks to make and are highly skilled endeavours, using clever editing and song choices to make a point, whether it’s something as simple as “I love Star Trek and so should you” or “Jeff and Annie from Community are in love,” to more complex issues like pointing out the racist subtext in Firefly. There are whole conventions dedicated to vidding, but relatively few fanvids find an audience outside of online fandom. “Starships” is one that went viral, a brilliant and easily accessible celebration of sci-fi spaceships.
You can make a fanvid to any soundtrack, but Vienna Teng’s songs seem to pop up in every major fandom of the past 10 years. In a way her music has spread like a meme, passing from person to person.
When she released an album under a Creative Commons license last year, a group of fanvidders decided to take the whole thing and make it into a multifandom fanvid concept album: Aims. The resulting project includes political commentary, abstract concepts like a vid about “infrastructure,” and more traditionally emotional vids like this uplifting take on Pacific Rim…

I keep meaning to buy a package of Tim Tams at the local grocery store so I can know what all the fuss is about. Probably people will tell me that I can’t truly know until I’ve had Australian Tim Tams, that Canadian ones just aren’t the same, but they also said that about British vs American Cadbury and it wasn’t true. (Actually, our Tim Tams might even be imported from Australia. I’ll have to check that next time I’m at Zehrs.)
Speaking of Cadbury, I’ve had Crunchies, but I can never remember whether I like them. There are so many Cadbury products with weird names, and the vast majority of them are bad, so I generally just avoid all of them to be safe.
I saw fairy bread in a previous “look at the stuff you non-Aussies are missing out on” post, and I thought it sounded disgusting, but then I never liked sprinkles.

After so many years of disliking centaurs for being impractically designed, I thought of a design that actually makes them look like functional organisms! And now I love them!!!
Their hands have two thumbs, and can be used in walking and running just like the other limbs. The smaller centaurs have dexterous toes on all of their limbs, but in the higher weight classes, gripping ability on the back four legs is sacrificed in order to better support the body while standing. The central limbs are set wider than the fore and hind limbs to prevent collision when all six are being used in locomotion.

So there’s this princess, and some dudebro prince wants to marry her and stuff, because that’s how these things work out. Dudebro’s like “I love you! Let’s get married!” and she’s like “Ew.” And he’s mad because she Just Doesn’t Realize how much he Really Truly Loves and Deserves her! so he pays an unscrupulous witch to put a curse on her so that she will fall into a deep sleep and only true love’s kiss will be able to wake her up.
So the princess falls into a big old sleep and her family is like Oh no! and they summon the best doctors, who gather around her and keep her in a big clean room and try to figure out what do. and her friends leave her flowers and her little dog sits outside the door and whines, and she doesn’t wake up. And then dudebro prince comes in like <ahem> “OH HEY LET ME TRY SOMETHING MAYBE IT WILL WORK” and he pecks her on the lips and like, she doesn’t wake up. Because he doesn’t love her. He doesn’t even know her. He just loves the idea of marrying a princess.
But now she’s still asleep and everyone’s out of ideas and the witch won’t even give Dudebro his money back because like, hey, the curse worked, he was the one who fucked up. Everyone is so sad because they can’t help the princess! Then one day her little dog squeezes past one of the doctors and runs into her room, jumps on her bed and licks her face. The princess wakes up.
Unfortunately she still has some lingering curse narcolepsy and will sometimes fall into an enchanted sleep while she’s trying to go about her business, so her dog becomes a service dog and his job is to give her kisses whenever she needs the spell to be broken again.
And they live happily ever after!

Same here. And this is the article I found in the National Post (pretty good I thought, though scads of pictures if that’s a bandwidth problem for you).
I think I did know he’d dealt with depression over the years, so on that level I had context for it. But still. :-(
