This bird might look like a holiday ornament, but it is actually a rare half-female, half-male northern cardinal

“Researchers have long known such split-sex “gynandromorphs” exist in insects, crustaceans, and birds. But scientists rarely get to extensively study a gynandromorph in the wild; most published observations cover just a day or so. Observers got to follow this bird, however, for more than 40 days between December 2008 and March 2010.”

The Gouldian finch are small, brightly colored birds with green backs, yellow bellies, and purple breasts  with a light blue uppertail and a cream undertail. Sometimes called lady gouldians, their facial color can vary, but black is the most common. Gouldian finch chicks are equipped with blue phosphorescent beads along their mouths, making it easy for the parents to feed them in the darkness of the nest cavity.

Three-week-old baby sulcatta tortoises, which have been named Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo and Michelangelo, hitch a ride on the back of their mother Margaret at the Lake District Wild Life Park near Keswick. It’s the first time the wildlife park has successfully bred Africa’s largest tortoise.
