Missing Asks!

roachpatrol:

thorhugs:

hammerandrage:

I FOUND IT! I FOUND THE ANSWER!

Okay, maybe not the final answer, but part of the problem! Asks keep getting eaten. Which is a big problem when you’re doing something anon and don’t want to ask the person “did you get it”?

If the ask contains an ellipsis without a trailing space, it gets eaten. It says delivered, but it goes nowhere.

So “Well… then” will get delivered but “Well…then” won’t!

Hopefully this helps in getting your asks actually delivered.

Post I made for my RP account, but very relevant elsewhere.

After discovering this, I tested it. Five different accounts between two people, anon vs not. No matter what, without fail, if the trailing space was missing, the message was not delivered.

I contacted Tumblr staff. They were already fully aware this was happening, but it is not documented anywhere. Nor do they seem keen on giving their users a warning about it in any fashion.

Help me spread the word because the staff won’t!

I just tried this out with a friend and those exact phrases and this post is correct! “Well…then” did not show up. I wasn’t even anon at the time.

Always make sure to put a space after your ellipses, I guess!

… huh.

Starvation Symptoms – The Effects Of Starvation On Behavior: Implications for Eating Disorders

{{Title link: https://web.archive.org/web/20050828195845/http://river-centre.org/StarvSympt.html }}

clatterbane:

clatterbane:

I thought I would go ahead and share this separately,  because it’s really interesting, based on the Minnesota Starvation Experiment.

Finding this stuff out has helped me understand and deal with some ongoing ED triggers. Just not getting enough to eat (or probably a good enough variety of nutrients)  for a while will predictably trigger the kinds of thoughts and behaviors associated with eating disorders. No convoluted psychological explanations required; just starving your brain will do this.

Recognizing the pattern has helped me keep things at the disturbing thoughts level, and take that as an indication that I need to get more to eat. Rather than get triggered into actual disordered eating behavior. :-| (In my case, I stay hungry a lot from diabetes, with higher energy requirements there—and then also have trouble with remembering to eat enough and just standing up to cook, for other disability-related reasons.)

I first ran across this in the context of crash and yo-yo dieting, but it would apply equally well if you are having trouble consistently eating enough or enough variety for disability-related reasons. That can really foul you up in a lot of ways. And I would also not be surprised to see higher rates of clinical eating disorders among people who do have these disability problems with staying adequately fed, just from the complicated physiological responses there.

Reblogging again because I was reminded of it, and this is important stuff.

Regarding the Balkan floodings (Please read)

andr0id:

It is Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia that needs our help. All three countries. Not everyone can donate money, which is absolutely understandable, but what everyone can do is share information about these events. The media reports are poor and we need to raise awareness together.

Three months worth of rain has been falling over the countries in just three days, causing the worst floods in the past 120 years. A state of emergency has been declared. Thousands and thousands of people have been forced to evacuate and leave everything behind due to the floodings, and at least 35 people have been killed, the number still going up. More than 100,000 homes have been washed out. Read more here.

If you want to donate money, turn to your local Red Cross organisation.

Or:
Serbian Red Cross
Bosnian Red Cross
Croatian Red Cross

All help is needed, even reblogging a post on Tumblr or sharing something on Facebook is worth so much. We need to help in every way we can!

theoncomingsprinkle asked: so I have a question about tornadoes. Is there a certain spot in the basement that’s best for taking shelter? Like in the middle, in a corner, in a small room, along one side of the basement, etc. Just something I’ve always wondered since my family and I always end up sprawled out in the main area when we’re under a warning, which I figure probably isn’t the best. It’s cool if you don’t know, I was just wondering. Thanks!

eponymous-rose:

Good question!

By far the biggest threat during a tornado is debris—in particularly high winds, even blades of grass can travel quickly enough to embed themselves into telephone poles. Basically, when a tornado is imminent, you have to think of it like a bunch of people in a mafia movie coming by to shoot up the place—your goal is to put as many walls between you and the projectiles as possible.

If your basement is entirely belowground (i.e., no windows), this is ideal—you’ve got the entire first floor between you and the storm. Most basements, however, are only partially submerged, and often you’ll have windows that can be broken and become debris—by the way, don’t waste time trying to open windows to “equalize pressure” or whatever during a tornado, since it won’t work and the tornado will open the windows for you anyway.

Basically, you want as much stuff between you and the storm as possible—if there’s somewhere interior like a crawlspace under the stairs that’s not within sight of any windows or exterior walls, that would be ideal. Even if you don’t have windows in your basement, stay away from walls that back directly onto the outside (remember the mafia-movie dudes—one wall won’t be great protection). If you’ve got no other options, it’s sometimes best to drag a couple of mattresses or a study table down with you, and hide under that makeshift cover in the center of the room, as far from all external walls as possible.

If you don’t have a basement, you want to find an interior room (usually something like a bathroom) that puts as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Once again, dragging a mattress on top of you can reduce the amount of debris that actually makes it to your body. The objective is always to put as many barriers as possible between you and the storm.

If you’re an ace with a cervix…

ace-muslim:

I’m posting this because I’ve seen this question come up a number of times in posts and comments, and there seems to be a lot of confusion and uncertainty around it.

If you are sexually active, or have been previously, you should have regular Pap tests according to the schedule recommended by your doctor.

If you are not sexually active and have never been sexually active, you may not need to have Pap tests done and you should talk to your doctor. Cervical cancer is almost always caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV infection is almost always caused by sexual (specifically, genital) contact. Because of this, if you are not sexually active and have never been sexually active, there’s a good chance your doctor will recommend that you do not need to have Pap tests done.

You do not need to tell them that you’re asexual, since this is about behavior rather than attraction or orientation.

A lot of things written about Pap tests and cervical cancer seem to assume that all people with cervixes over age 21 are or have been sexually active and they may not provide a specific recommendation in the case of a sexually non-active adult. This seems to be the source of most of the confusion and uncertainty (public health officials, may I kindly suggest not making heteronormative and sex-normative assumptions).

A Pap test is, shall we say, not the world’s most comfortable procedure and sex-averse or sex-repulsed aces may feel especially anxious about it (many of us have a specific aversion or repulsion response to the idea of having something in the vagina). So it’s worth talking with your doctor to find out if you may not need to have it done after all.

I had talked previously with my doctor about this and he had said it was not necessary. Then this week, my healthcare provider’s automated system looked at my age, gender, and medical history and flagged me as needing to have a Pap test done ASAP. I talked to my doctor again and he not only confirmed that I don’t need to have it done, but he put a special note on my record so that I don’t keep getting these reminders. It may seem a bit scary to bring it up, but it can be worth it and make your life easier.

The Cowbird’s Guide to Practical Brood Parasitism

koryos:

Birds.

I don’t know how else to preface this article. Birds, man.

So I’m willing to bet that a lot of you are aware of brood parasitism à la the cuckoo, and a good number of my followers have probably even heard of the terrifying methods the intraspecific brood parasitic coot uses to weed out the fakers from its progeny.

But have you heard much about this lady?

image

Looks kind of drab and unassuming, doesn’t she.

(She murders your children if you don’t do what she wants.)

So let’s talk about brood parasitism and why it’s good and why it’s not so good and the different strategies that different bird species use, including mafia behavior. And we’ll talk about the development of male cowbird courtship too because that’s kind of cool. But yeah, lots of bird child murdering behind the cut just so you’re aware.
