iwillbeyourhands:

something i’m curious about: where are you from, and is it normal to see fireflies in the summer?

choppye:

Auckland New Zealand and HELL NO

macateallthespookings:

my mom lives in NC and during the summer the treeline behind her house lights up with so many fireflies that it looks like flickering stars in a darker part of the night sky

iwillbeyourhands:

yeah this is my experience, basically a constant lights show in the summer

timefortigers:

ive never seen a firefly in my life

wufflesvetinari:

in suburban michigan you may see a single firefly at night and it will be a Big Deal. if you go to the more wooded areas, you’ll see them flashing on and off regularly (still not that intense though)

ladyyatexel:

Everywhere in Pennsylvania. They’re actually our state insect.

jewishdragon:

California

No

thetransintransgenic:

Some places have fireflies and some places do not and the places that do not are WRONG AND BAD BECAUSE FIREFLIES ARE WONDERFUL AND AMAZING.

Raising a child in a place that does not have Sufficient Fireflies is basically ALMOST AS TERRIBLE as gendering your child, which is very terrible indeed.

(</sarcasm>. Except about the “gendering children is terrible”. And the “fireflies are awesome”. But it’s okay and not abuse if there are no fireflies, I guess. Even though fireflies are awesome.)

sinesalvatorem:

I have seen, like, one firefly (or maybe another luminous flying bug?) every few months in the couple Caribbean countries I’ve lived in. It seems to be completely unrelated to seasons there.

I miss New Jersey’s fireflies. I haven’t seen a firefly since I moved to southern Ontario.

(To be fair, I don’t go out at dusk very often here, so it’s possible there’s some around and they’re just less blatant.)

Well, Shabbat at Stanford was/is excellent. In a surprise turn of events, @theunitofcaring has become the first non-@rosetintedkaleidoscope rationalist to meet me irl, beating both @sinesalvatorem and @arbitrarilychosen, the two prior favorites.

so buying thread payouts are 27,500t for a lvl 6 in light vs plague currently

if you had any dragons you want to clear out and get like three times exalt payout for them (and you don’t mind them being exalted) today would be the day :D

this has been a pixel dragon PSA

Let’s see…100 lair spaces – 21 empty spaces – 13 permanents = 66 adult fodder. (Most bought for 10k, managed to snag a few more the following day for 15k. Dragons growing up on Saturday got rapidly hard to come by on Thursday as people started to prepare in earnest: I’m glad I timed most of my first batch of flipped fodder to grow up on Wednesday.)

I’ll probably wait a few more hours to see if the prices get even more ridiculous than the 24.5k of ridiculous they already are.

Oh, that sucks that your account was deleted.  Did you ever back up any of your posts?  (Which reminds me, I should back up my tumblr again.)

I have a few backups, the latest of which goes up to nov 20 of last year. So not *great*, but it’s something.

And if more people back up their blogs, more of my later posts that they reblogged will be preserved!

What backup method do you use? I’m currently settling for this thing and I want to know if you have any better ideas.

(Pros of linked thing: have already successfully figured out how to back up my own blog with it; uses only public information, so theoretically there’s no reason why one can’t use it on blogs other than one’s own. Cons: archives are not searchable by any method obvious enough for me to have thought of it; in practice three of the four non-me blogs I tried it on (theunitofcaring, justice-turtle, sinesalvatorem) failed after the first page for no apparent reason. (mythologymondays succeeded.))

I use https://github.com/bbolli/tumblr-utils/ (via the hack-y method of editing the python source to point it to the blogs I want, since I can’t be arsed to run things from command line).

The backups it generates are not searchable by any obvious method afaict, but they are pretty easily navigable (in the form of nicely formatted html pages, including an index and pages by month). And you can back up other people’s blogs — in fact, one of the ones that I preserved recently was @theunitofcaring’s, which went off without a hitch. Occasionally some images fail to download for no evident reason, but very rarely. Overall I recommend.

(if @theunitofcaring or anyone else feels strongly that they don’t want their blog backed up I will send all my personal records of it down the memory hole, but I defaulted to “yes” on the theory that public blogs can be assumed to be public, etc)

Thank you! This does look good. (Well, the archives are relatively big (mine is 1.4GB), but that’s a price worth paying for the pictures.)

Dude, Light vs Plague is just crazy. It’s only Tuesday and the cheapest adult dragons on the AH are at 18,000 treasure (for comparison, a normal week they’re more like 8,000.) And the buy thread payouts are keeping up with that – last I checked they were at 21k treasure for a level 6 (which would normally bring 10k treasure from exalting).

*goes back to leveling dragons*

*looks at ~80 hatchlings in lair, mostly 5-day-olds bought for 10k, some 4-day-olds bought for 8k*

*licks lips*

(There’s no way I’m going to be able to train 80 dragons in a reasonable timeframe, so I’ll probably just sell them as level 1s. Might keep the ones with exalt bonuses to train myself, haven’t decided yet.)

Mashed potatoes are the Platonic ideal of childhood-nostalgia comfort food. I actually feel nostalgic when I eat them even though I never ate mashed potatoes growing up.

I posted a photo of myself on Facebook wearing headphones with my eyes closed (for purely innocent reasons).  My grandmother commented:

Call Your Grandmother

MY OWN GRANDMOTHER.  WHY IS THE UNIVERSE CONSPIRING TO SKEEVE ME OUT IN THIS MANNER?

This. Is. Amazing.

Oh god.
I am so sorry.

(But also- this is really really funny.)

@diaryofasnowflake

this apparently answers the question of whether your kink genes are inheritable. congratulations for Science!!

I assumed that this was proof my grandmother DOESN’T have a hypnosis kink (not that I had given it much thought).

Because if she did, why the fuck would she drop that on my Facebook?

My reasoning for asking went like this:

“I’ve heard quite a few stories of children who don’t know yet that they’re kinky* playing (or trying to convince people to play with them) unknowingly-erotic games. Therefore, it is possible for some people to have the fascination aspect of a kink without the accompanying sense of propriety, at least as long as they are not made aware of the sexual nature of their fascination. (Just because *I* was always very uncomfortable when my parents sang me lullabyes doesn’t mean that *everyone’s* anti-incest instincts adapt to their sexualities without prompting.)

There is insufficient data to even hazard a guess at how likely someone is to make that joke assuming the absence of a hypnosis kink, but–ignoring propriety, for the reasons given above–it can safely be assumed to be less likely than someone who does have such a kink making that joke.

(Yes, there are so many non-hypno-kinky people out there that a random person (maybe even a blood relative) telling that joke is probably still more likely than not to lack the kink, but I didn’t say it was a strong suspicion.)”

tl;dr The story sounded like stories kinksters tell about their childhoods as evidence they were, in hindsight, kinky, but with your grandmother in the place of the child (and age alone isn’t always enough to make you aware of your kinks).

*These stories are usually told by the children’s present selves, now adults and more self-aware.

Ack, sorry to hear that. I hate when that happens.

Also, would the grandmother in question happen to be a blood relative of this kid?

I’m Officially In The Bay!

sinesalvatorem:

Well, I’ve been in the Bay for 15 hours, but I didn’t have wifi for most of that time. However, I now have wifi so I can now tell you that I made it!

When I arrived at the airport there were a bunch of people waiting there to meet me. Unfortunately, I have forgotten most of their Tumblr urls in the meantime. I remember @theunitofcaring, @endecision, @ozymandias271, @michaelblume, @luminousalicorn, and @chroniclesofrettik were there. I also remember a bunch of other people by face/voice.

We played a dice farming game, because Kelsey had a bag of 150 dice on her, because Kelsey. Alicorn was the most successful dice tycoon, while most of my dice died of malaria. We then located our cars, while singing the Hamilton soundtrack, and migrated to a sushi restaurant.

Alas, the sushi restaurant was out of sushi. This is apparently a thing that happens. We moved from there to another restaurant where we discussed the morality of Sith lords, the moral relevance of orcs, unprincipled exceptions in politics, and how exciting it was to have acquired an Alison.

Then everyone drifted off to their homes. Kelsey and I went back to her dorm room and cuddled a lot. It was during the cuddles that it really hit me that I had made it. It stopped feeling like a dream. I was safe. I was home.

I slept well last night.

*cheering, also aww-ing*

(By the way, I think you need to update your Tumblr timezone setting. My brain’s timezone-translation subroutine is throwing an exception: Error: Feb 3, 2016 3:21 pm PST has not occurred.)

Tumblr has timezone settings?

I assumed it just took the d&t from the computer where the post was made.

Also, :D :D :D :D we have successfully acquired an alison

Hmm, yeah, I’m not seeing a button for it. Might be her computer’s timezone that needs updating, then.

Makes sense, which puts the actual timing of her post…63 minutes ago, I believe.

Wait, did you calculate that from her old timezone rather than just looking?

…right, Tumblr’s interface has crappy documentation and it’s easy not to notice that if you hover over the top-right corner (the link to the permalink page) of a post on your dashboard, it tells you the time (your local time) it was posted.

*hovers over OP’s corner* “2:21pm”

*hovers over your post’s corner* “3:24pm”
