Tumblr accessibility culture fix: link text

jadelennox:

Dear Tumblr users:

There’s a cultural thing on Tumblr that if people changed just a little, would be a big accessibility win. You know the technique of linking to the source of content with just a linked “X”, eg: [x], or numbers, eg 1, 2, and 3? Please don’t do this.

That tiny “X” makes a tiny, tiny target. It’s hard to see if you have vision impairments or other visual processing issues. It’s hard to navigate to with a mouse for users with mobility issues, and a nearly impossible target for many people with small touch screens. For screen reader users, it simply announces as “link: X” and can be very difficult to understand out of context. For people with cognitive processing issues, it’s a link that tells the user nothing about its destination.

And most of these limitations can also be problems for able-bodied people!

Instead, using meaningful link text. Some examples might be

For a video, the title of the video is a pretty good choice, eg “How Blind People Use Twitter & You Tube on the iPhone 4S”. Or “Source”, or “source at YouTube”, or “video source”.

It’s a little thing which can be hugely beneficial to people with disabilities. Thanks, and I hope you consider changing how you link.

(Please reblog, too!)

In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, North America, Australia, western Asia and most of the Pacific Ocean will be treated to a full lunar eclipse in which the moon takes on a reddish hue as it passes through the Earth’s shadow.

We borrowed this moon image from The moon hoax, or a discovery that the moon has a vast population of human beings, an 1859 book that compiled the original six articles published in The Sun in 1835. A century before H.G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds induced panic about a Martian invasion of New Jersey, these six articles helped grow The Sun’s readership dramatically and establish it as a major New York newspaper. Read more about the fascinating history of The Great Moon Hoax on our blog. Rather listen to a podcast? The memory palace has an episode that might be of interest.

Eyes to the sky tonight!

Fun fact: they totally sell Tim Tams in Canada. Imported from Australia and everything. I found them in the cookie section of Zehrs. (Not even the exotic section, just the regular cookie section.)

They had original and dark chocolate flavours, though it’s possible you might find some of the other flavours in other stores. I wouldn’t know.

I can personally confirm that the dark chocolate ones are delicious, but since I’ve never had bought-in-Australia Tim Tams, I don’t know for sure that the exported ones taste the same as the ones sold domestically. If someone with experience in Australian snack foods could confirm this, that would be good.

PRO TIP: watching “how it’s made” is SUCH a good way to combat an anxiety attack! There’s soothing music, a soothing narrator who’s intonation never changes (narrators never yell or change their speaking pace), it’s engaging enough to keep you occupied but doesn’t force you to think too hard!

also sometimes the narrator makes bad puns

ada-adorable asked: Do you listen to night Vale? If so, what do you think of Hiram McDaniels? If not, well, you should listen to night Vale but don’t feel compelled to pass judgment on the character without listening to the show in general. I mean, unless you want to.

lb-lee:

Actually, I have NEVER listened to Night Vale, and I likely never will on account of pure audio is one of the HARDEST ways for me to process information. (Seriously, I can read books that’d make your eyes bleed, but have me listen to a podcast and I climb walls.  I don’t know how audiophiles even cope with life.)

So sadly, I know absolutely nothing about this character.  Feel free to give me your quick sketch, if you like; you can’t really spoil me on this front.  If that’s not your cuppa, perhaps one of my friendly readers will add their opinion!

Cecil Speaks! Cecil Speaks is awesome. They even have translations of the occasional Russian and Morse code.

(I do have enough audio-processing ability to listen to Night Vale, but only just, so I know that feeling.)

Okay, folks. For those of you who haven’t heard, there’s a lunar eclipse on April 15th (the beginning of the 15th, not the end).

People in the westerly parts of North America with roughly ordinary (by industrialised standards) sleep schedules will get a good show. People in the easterly parts of North America with nocturnal sleep schedules (or who stay up late for the occasion) will also get a good show. Europeans are likely out of luck, but may see something just before dawn. (See map and time chart for more details.)

(I personally live in the Eastern time zone and sleep from midnight to 9, and haven’t decided if I’m willing to stay up for it. If you’re in the same boat and decide it’s not worth staying up half the night, the September 28th, 2015 eclipse is much more conveniently timed: 9:07 PM – 12:27 AM EDT. There are also two other lunar eclipses between now and then that people missing this one (or even people not missing this one) may want to look into. (We’re having an unusually large number of lunar eclipses over the next couple years.))

Here’s some more detailed information (and some more over here) on the “Heartbleed” bug that was found in OpenSSL security. It doe NOT affect all internet sites everywhere.

Here is a list of the top 1000 sites listed by which are vulnerable and which aren’t. Many are not, which means any info you have on them is safe. Sites such as LastPass and Google are safe. If you have accounts on the affected sites, those are the ones to watch out for.

this needs to be signal boosted a little bit better because tumblr staff did a piss poor job of it.

It’s April!

Whilst I’m sure you all mean well, please remember not to support or donate to Autism Speaks this month (or any month for that matter) as they are a terrible organisation who hurt the autistic community

Instead I recommend actually taking time to look at writing from autistic people and learn from them and, if you really want to help and donate, consider ASAN instead

Thank you xx

Okay, folks. It’s Lying Liars Who Lie Day.

Beware of new features on websites (cough-TumblrPro-cough)* and things with links that can neither confirm nor deny they go to Youtube (or in some cases that confirm they go to Youtube). If possible, avoid contact with parts of the offline world containing known or potential pranksters. If your life circumstances forbid this, my sympathies.

Good luck, everyone. Stay safe. It’s dangerous out there today.

*I watched that whole video (having been told in advance it was a video, but not what was in it) bracing for a RickRoll. Never happened. Must admit, I was too scared to click the upgrade button. Let’s see…oh dear.
