Finished the geology project. It almost reflected the geology of Ontario. No idea where the hematite (real hematite, not artificial magnetic hematine) came from. Not confident it even is a hematite. I decided to speculate that perhaps it made its way over here from New York or Michigan, acknowledge that “mis-identification is also a possibility”, and move on.

That was the last geology assignment (I did the exam on Tuesday, after confirming that I was allowed to complete the project after the exam), but for comp-sci I still have fifteen textbook chapters to review, an exam to complete (and get up early for, because the invigilator* only does mornings), two articles to write (they’re not full-on formal essays, at least), and a set of linked HTML documents with embedded Java to create. (This being an introductory course, they don’t expect you to write the Java code, but I haven’t gone through the tutorial on how to embed it yet. And I’m “encouraged” to “create an original ‘look and feel’” on the HTML pages.)

I have ten days. They are shaping up to be very long days, but I think they will be long enough.

Hello from my new (well, refurbished) Dell Inspiron 15R M5110! (Wow, Dell nomenclature has gotten complicated.)

My crappy old Latitude D620 was finally starting to die of old age, so I got this one instead (for less than the D620 cost me three years ago; after researching used computer prices I’m beginning to wonder if the brick-and-mortar used computer store I bought that one from ripped me off). It arrived Monday morning, and this morning I pretty much finished setting it up how I want it. It has six gigs of RAM and a Radeon HD 6480G graphics card, and do you know what that means?

Masssss Effff–

Wait, no, I have a final exam next week to study for, plus one and a half school projects and two articles to complete by the end of the month. I don’t have time to get into a new game. (No matter how tempting justice-turtle is making Flight Rising look.)

December 1st, maybe sooner if I manage to finish early:

We have a Tumblr now!

{{previous post in sequence}}

ds9rewatch:

This is the Tumblr mirror (not the goatee’d or pleather’d kind) of the ds9-rewatch Livejournal community. You might have seen our post last month. If not, here’s the basics: each week, we gather in our chatroom to watch an episode of DS9 together. It’s all the fun of hanging out watching TV with your friends, but with more typing and less having to be on the same continent as each other.

We hold three rewatches each week (schedule here), so if you miss one you still have a chance to join in for that episode. The next rewatch time coming up is the third one for “Emissary”, so if you act fast you can still get in at the very beginning of this cycle! (If you do miss this one, don’t let that stop you from joining in later. I didn’t learn about DS9 Rewatch until the first cycle’s “Duet”, and I did fine.)

As I mentioned above, this blog is going to mirror the LJ, so that those of you who check your dashboard a lot more often than your friends page can still keep an eye on what’s going on with us. Reminder posts, links to discussion posts (please leave your discussion comments on the LJ post, not on Tumblr), and notices of special extra rewatches are just some of the things you’ll be able to find here!

Please spread the word about our community! The more people who join in, the livelier our conversations will be!

In an absolutely wonderful [/sarcasm] beginning to Asexual Awareness Week, I fumbled my ace ring in the bathroom this morning and it shattered against the tile.

I’m going to keep an eye out every store I go to. The next time I find a place selling non-hematine black rings that look decent and aren’t horribly expensive, I will buy one. The next time I find hematine rings that meet those standards, I will buy five. I really like the magnetism aspect, and like hell am I waiting until the annual Rock and Gem Fair in May to replace it like I did when I broke the last one. (Though, since that previous one was made of hematine beads and I still have all the beads, I might still be able to find a replacement string. Can’t do that now, though, because I don’t have the beads with me.)

Hello, Trekkies of Tumblr!

Do you enjoy Deep Space Nine? Do you enjoy watching TV with your friends and talking about the episode together? Do you enjoy how the Internet allows people to easily gather together and chat about the stuff they like, even when they’re on different continents and have never met in person?

If so, you might be interested in DS9 Rewatch. We’re a LiveJournal community dedicated to…well, rewatching DS9. Each week, we meet in our chatroom to watch an episode of DS9 together, working our way through the series in order. We hold three rewatches per week (see our schedule here), so if you miss one you still have a chance to watch that episode with us.

We’ve been around for over three and a half years, and in about a month we’ll be starting our second run-through of the series. In the meantime, we’re watching our way through a list one of our rewatchers made of “episodes that are just fun”, and you’re welcome to stop by for one of those.

So, come watch with us. Have fun. Make friends. Have your life changed for the better. (Mine certainly was.)

~Brin, head moderator of DS9 Rewatch

Addendum Nov 9th ‘14: For anyone who sees the OP after this, I thought you should know that we have a Tumblr now.

abandonedgod asked: I’m sorry, as I already mentioned, I don’t know much about prosopagnosia but I’m genuinely interested in this topic. Would you mind if I asked if you can describe what you see when you look at other people’s faces? I hope I’m not being rude.

{{previous post in sequence}}

I don’t think it’s rude at all, especially since I pretty much volunteered myself as an Example Prosopagnosic by answering your post (in first-person, no less).

I was born faceblind, so I don’t know what it’s like having a functional facial recognition processor. That makes it trickier to describe, since all I have to contrast it with are second-hand descriptions (which, in turn, were also tricky for them to make).

It’s not that I don’t see faces. That’s a common misconception. (To the extent that having any conception about prosopagnosia is common, though I think there’s been a lot of improvement in general awareness lately.) I just looked at my brother’s face, sitting over on the other couch, and it’s all there: pink-red lips, pale skin, nose, pimple, brown eyes, bangs. Thinking of that fresh memory, I can almost picture it. Sometimes, just for a moment, I can grasp it, but mostly the memory is blurred and lacking in detail.

(It feels perfectly natural, having it blurry like that. So natural that I didn’t even notice I was doing it until I read other prosos’ descriptions of it. There are hardly ever faces in my dreams, and that feels perfectly natural too.)

Note that my brother is one of the easiest people to picture. I’ve known him for all sixteen years of his life, and when you’re reliant on general object processing to recognise faces, experience with a given face counts for a lot. After knowing my friend Jacqueline for four years, I was able to successfully recognise her when I bumped into her in a mall*. I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I’d had less experience with her and her appearance. It took me about a year, maybe a year and a half, to reliably tell her two teenage daughters apart, but after six years of knowing them I’m not sure how I ever managed to have trouble.

(It’s good that they were teenage. Children are tricky. They change quickly, so by the time you’ve built up enough experience with one face to recognise them semi-reliably, they’ve gone and gotten themselves a different one. When my brother was six, I couldn’t distinguish him from the other boys in his Cub Scout den. I didn’t feel a sense of recognition at my own face in the mirror until my mid-teens, 2 – 3 years after my face stopped developing. (Even now, I can still tell which other faces I would have trouble distinguishing from my own, had I less experience with mine. Plus, I’m not entirely sure how much of the ease is due to my large glasses.))

If you want to read more, try looking through my prosopagnosia tag or dhalim’s blog. For another, very detailed perspective, Bill Choisser’s classic book, Face Blind!, is freely available on the Internet. (I haven’t read that book since I was first learning about prosopagnosia seven years ago, so I don’t remember at exactly which points my mileage varied. I do remember it being interesting, though.) The general prosopagnosia tag on Tumblr (which I track, and is how I found your post) sometimes has good stuff in it, though there’s also the occasional non-proso using us to make Profound Statements about Seeing People for Who They Are Rather Than What They Look Like and artworks depicting faceless people (see paragraph 3).

*Malls are tough. Absolutely anyone could be in the mall, so you can’t use context to narrow the list of potential suspects. (“She’s really tall and she’s at my Girl Scout meeting, so she must be Jenny, because Jenny is the only really tall girl in my troop.”)

The Article That Inspired Steve Jobs: “Secrets of the Little Blue Box”

{{Title link: http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/the_spectator/2011/10/the_article_that_inspired_steve_jobs_secrets_of_the_little_blue_.single.html }}

A fascinating longread about the “phone phreaks”, a subculture that sprang up around the hacking of phone networks.

I find that reading material about mid-late 20th-century history is hard to come by: it’s recent enough that a lot of people don’t think of it as “history”, so they don’t talk about it when they talk about history, and it doesn’t really come up in much detail otherwise. Here’s a piece of that history that I thought you deserved to see.

(Hat tip to Mark E., a fellow student in my introductory computer-science course who linked to this in the course’s official forum.)

…dammit, I knew I shouldn’t have kept listening to that science podcast once I realised it was about antibiotic-resistant infections in chickens transmitting to humans through meat.

Especially when I am having chicken products for dinner. (It’s eggs, not meat, but still.)

I…will probably be able to eat it anyway? Probably without significant nocebo effect? I definitely don’t feel nearly as bad as I did after that one Night Vale horoscope, so I’m hopeful.

Sort-of-tagged by eponymous-rose.

When you see this, post five memories that seem especially surreal out of context. Anyone who wants to play, consider yourself tagged!

1. “You know,” I remark to the people sitting on the cliff with me, “deli chicken and garlic hummus on a cinnamon-raisin bagel is actually pretty good.”

2. I’m hiding in one of the small storage hollows built into the benches. I decide I like it here. It’s comfortable. I feel safe. They’ll never find me.

3. They tell us that if we want, we can hold a holy book of our choice in our left hand to swear on. It isn’t until afterward that we realise my mother swore allegiance to the Queen of England on her first-born child.

4. I’m riding on a bicycle. There is a skeleton riding an identical bike next to me. If only the bikes could move, I think, then I would definitely be beating him.

5. The pre-teen wearing a top hat and pocketwatch shakes my hand. He tells me his name is Fierce.

Related to the previous post, but seemed just different enough to merit its own thing:

Sometimes I think I should write a bit of sex-ed article. Something in that kind of style. Something that treats my experience as normative, with lots of false-inclusive “we”s and “you”s, and expressions of diversity and its greatness that don’t extend far enough to cover the reader.

“The most obvious sign that you’re experiencing sexual arousal is a sharp, twinging feeling. This can occur anywhere along an imaginary line down the middle of your torso. Most people feel it in the chest or stomach area, some in the genitals, and a few at the base of the neck. There are also some people who can feel it in any or all of these areas at different times, sometimes depending on what they’re responding to. These are all fine: all bodies are different, and all bodies are okay!”

There would be no mention of people who perceive this sensation as heat. Depending on what level of alternate-universe I was going for, I might replace all instances of “hot” with “sharp”.
