Eclipse Phase PDFs

{{Title link: https://robboyle.wordpress.com/eclipse-phase-pdfs/ }}

ilzolende:

If you are a Tumblr transhumanist you should consider reading the Eclipse Phase PDFs (the horror themes are less pervasive than is implied).

If you are the sort of Tumblr leftist who hangs around with transhumanists, you should also consider doing that. They have multiple protagonist-y anarchist factions and other stuff that might be appealing. (I wouldn’t really know, all the politics stuff I have done has been through the [Redacted] Young Democrats (funded by [Redacted] Democratic Club) which are basically what you would expect from a group that does voter registration campaigns and owns a life-size cardboard cutout of Hillary Clinton, but the authors are clearly sympathetic to this stuff and it shows.)

[ulterior motive: I want to play Eclipse Phase, but I don’t want to be a GM, so I want to get someone else enthusiastic enough about this game to run it.]

Image description: Book cover with the title Eclipse Phase, crescent moon in between words. Subtitle: The Roleplaying Game of Transhumanist Conspiracy and Horror. Image is of a robot arm reaching out of a damaged space station to grab a rat-like humanoid in a space suit, but not as tacky as that description sounds.

Never played a tabletop RPG in my life, but Eclipse Phase has sounded interesting ever since I proofread a (sadly unfinished) story set in the Eclipse Phase universe, and I have heard that the game books are themselves an interesting read.

Person A: I love science!

Person B: *hands them a peer-reviewed journal*

Person A: It takes a lot of time and energy to develop literacy in those. People’s enjoyment of the things science can do for them shouldn’t be dismissed or shamed because of their lack of education, or their appreciation of the “shiny” parts of science. Those parts are important, both for bringing the benefits of science to more people, and simply for bringing more beauty to life. But you knew that, didn’t you… BARON VON DESTRUCTOID!

Person B (actually Baron von Destructoid): CURSES! My attempt to stifle youth appreciation of science – foiled again! Get him, my Destructrons!

Person A (actually Captain Science): Ha ha! *wzap* *kbam* *pow*

And once again the day is saved, by Science!, and by Not Being Judgmental About Other People’s Engagement With the World!

Scars can come in handy. I have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground.

OK, but why in the wizarding world would a map of the London Underground come in handy? The guy can teleport; he definitely doesn’t need this for transportation.

You heard it here first: Dumbledore plays Mornington Crescent.

See, the thing about Pluto is that as a planet it never really fit in. It hung out with the planets because there weren’t really a lot of other options, but it was always the weird kid that kept wandering off by itself.

So we looked around and found Pluto some critters like itself to make friends with. They’re all long-distance from each other and a bit scattered, and as far as a name for their shared identity they’re very much in the teenage experimenting-with-words phase, but Pluto feels a lot better now. We don’t have to be sad for it not being a planet anymore, it found an identity that fits it better. :-)

Okay, what if–instead of TOS!Uhura or TOS!Kirk or any other TOS character showing up in the AOS verse–Ben Sisko ends up popping into the AOS Enterprise by accident?

Like, he just appears on the bridge one day, looks around confused for a second, and then says, “Something tells me this is not the timeline I was shooting for.”

Because learning interdimensional travel from a species that has no concept of time is hard, folks.

And Ben just has to hang out on this shiny Enterprise until his Prophet mom comes by to pick him up.

In the mean time, adventure ensues.
